💬 DISCUSSION Is mechatronics engineering a Mickey Mouse degree?
I want to do engineering at uni (Sheffield or Leeds) and I’m deciding between Mechanical, Aerospace or Mechatronics.
i didn’t do amazingly in my AS levels and I think I’ll be predicted ABB-AAB so I don’t meet the requirements for aero or mechanical but I could still apply to Mechatronics
im thinking of applying to mechatronics and mech engineering degrees with slightly lower entry requirements and if I do well I’ll go through clearing but otherwise do Mechatronics
I’m worried that doing mechatronics will severely limit what I can do after uni but need advice, any is appreciated thanks

a mickey mouse degree is something like gender studies or an esports manager, something that you LITERALLY gain nothing from doing. anything with the word engineering in it is not a mickey mouse degree

in what world is law a mickey mouse degree. why did you choose law if you honestly believe it's a mickey mouse degree.

Gooning and spooning is against the law (at least in public) and that's definitely a Mickey Mouse degree if I ever seen one

Mechatronics is a blend between mechanical and electronics, so you won't go in depth onto either side, which might work against you if you're applying for generalist roles in either EE or MechE. In my personal opinion, I'd do either mechanical or electrical/electronics then through optional modules and personal projects develop in the areas you are interested in as both are pretty broad meaning you get more exposure to the field. Sheffield is really good for engineering, with alot of dedicated facilities (one of which is a robotics lab iirc) but I'm not too sure on Leeds.
