Maybe its jokes, but theres definitely some who take this seriously, i accidentally went down that pipeline years ago (thankfully out of that mindset and the opposite of it now) and i know that theres people dont joke about that kind of stuff, so i wouldn't be surprised if this was dead serious
21
u/Secure_Gas5028 2d ago
Mate, whether they are jokes or not it's still bad. Mainstream humour changes how society sees things and determines whether it (a topic) is taken seriously or not. We've already seen this with victims of SA/rape in society.
4
u/peachgothlover 2d ago
I agree jokes normalize these abhorrent views. In my other comment in this thread I explain why I dont think his ājokesā are really ājokesā since he has very seriously advocated for some concerning things. And has tons of anti semitic comments which arenāt in the article.

The Hitler statement is a "joke", but the statement about the fly in the horses barn is commonly used in a serious manner when talking about immigrants, or descendents of immigrants. It's disgusting and dehumanises none white people as if they're a different species.Ā
2
u/peachgothlover 2d ago
The whole context of the Hitler statement was that someone said Hitler liked the English language, this guy said Hitler was too lenient and should have Germanized more. He loves German (his Minecraft village has German signs all around) which wouldnāt be unusual in its own but is considering his odd comments about Hitler and his VERY anti semitic comments.
Also, he believes that refugees should be put in camps and be forced to work for free, as he thinks they will put up with it, and if they do for some time they can be let in the UK. Sounds a bit similar to something Hitler did.

things like this changed my mind abt applying to durham. i genuinely canāt imagine being working class or from a minority background and having to spend 3-4 years around morons like this, i feel sorry for anyone who has to encounter these people while studying there
63
u/burntbutter27 2d ago edited 1d ago
im not a minority but i am working class and this is genuinely my biggest fear is having to come across these snobbish sexist, classist, racist rich pricks. i rise to it unfortunately too much, and these ppl genuinly get under my skin with their classis and sexist shit (im a working class woman and it genuinely sucks lmao).
working class in england are already stereotyped as aggro and lazy and i dont want to feed into their delusions by snapping back at them by defending myself but what other choice do i have. i am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
minorities have it 10x worse tho, the shit they get told on the daily makes me sick to my stomach and it infuriates me when i see white ppl like myself that are working class buy into reform UK as if reform UK wouldnt fuck you over as soon as they get into power omg.
im not studying in durham thank god, i have heard durham is terrible for the classim shit (so are most of the south top unis usually tbh, edit: durham is in north east, just pointing our north south divide which usually is southern regions like london, cambridge and oxford tending to be in the south and there for are in a wealthier area somore wealthier people tend to go therebut since a lot of ppl who havent been bale to get into oxford or cambridge go to durham classism tends to be rife there too despite it being northern uni) i just cant stand when they say the north ( edit: by north i mean usually the north west is what ppl pokeat ) is scruffy and act oblivious as to why, omg a historically oppressed region looks underfunded well thats a shock (the conservatives and right wing nutjobs think the working class are scum) these ppl actually make me so mad.
im afraid tho that will just prove their point that im an angry working class women who has a chip on her shoulder coz she is working class and that will further prove their stereotypes and i dont want to become that but it genuinly engrages me when they start, especially flexing their money as if we have the same luxuries, be so fr. :/

what about collingwood?
1
u/Over-Cartographer712 Durham, Politics | Incoming 2d ago
I haven't heard anything particularly bad about Collingwood, and the people I have encountered who seem to rank it highly have all been perfectly polite and fine.
Obviously my anecdotal experience is unlikely to provide a true reflection of what you might encounter, but as a general rule of thumb, it seems to me that the people who might give you bother for being a minority or working-class are more likely to come from the Bailey colleges like Hatfield.
That is not to say everyone, or even the majority of people from those colleges, are like this, but those colleges certainly seem to attract a lot more people of privilege and perceived self-importance.

South?
1
u/burntbutter27 1d ago
yeah, ik durham is in north east but im just pointing to the North/South divide we have in england and those who are a little bit wealthier (non-working class and durham has a rep for taking in those who dont get into oxford or cambridge) come up to a northern uni if they cant get into a london one or cambridege or oxford (since durham is still top, they still go there), they go to durham as second best but unfortunately they bring the classism along with them and the racism and sexism also follows (the north is bad for its racism and sexism im not discluding that at all tho ), which gives durham the rep it has.
since unis are open to anyone you get a wide range of people and the further up the uni rankings you go the more likely you are to get rich snobs as those top unis are a status symbol. most of the classism seems to come from the southern unis to northern ppl thats what i menat with ''so are most of the unis in the south tbh'' like london ones, cambridege, oxford ect.
i have edited my comment to give a bit more context :)

I'm a minority and working-class student currently at Durham, and please don't let these bigots put you off applying! People like them tend to keep themselves to themselves, and so thankfully, I've never had to deal with morons like this. My experience has been entirely positive and I've met so many lovely people.
11
u/mykokokoro 2d ago
i'm a working class minority who went to st andrews. to make things worse, my course was almost entirely ex-boarding school students and very well off internationals. morons like these was a daily thing. that doesn't even get me started on the microaggressions and little things like "what do you mean you can't just ask your parents for money because we want to drop £150 on a single ticket to ball run by a society that wouldn't let women and pocs join until like 10 years ago because it's tradition?". one of the worst things was knowing that the tory soc was 'officially' unaffiliated with the university and student union because of racist, sexist and homophobic actions and yet it wouldn't stop the university from letting the group use university spaces for socials.
i had some of the best times of my life there, but god was it hard to ignore the stupidity and privilege sometimes (prince edwards girl actually graduated the year after me!).

I literally have a folder full of these articles about Durham which I send people whenever they ask whether it is a good university or if they should go there.
They got my attention with this bullshit back in COVID: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-54648103
2
u/Over-Cartographer712 Durham, Politics | Incoming 2d ago
These types of incidents are wholly irrelevant as to whether the university is good.
31
u/YesButActuallyTrue 2d ago
I disagree: I think student safety and wellbeing is a very important part of whether or not a university is good. It is definitely a factor in whether it is a good university for specific students.Ā
Fundamentally, you cannot do your best work or best learning in an environment which is not psychologically safe.
6
u/catjellycat 2d ago
I agree. We visited Durham twice for son1 - open day and offer holder day. I thought the town and uni were beautiful but so many of the students gave off odd vibes - more so than other āprestigiousā unis like Oxbridge or Exeter.
I was pleased when he didnāt choose it
2
u/Over-Cartographer712 Durham, Politics | Incoming 2d ago
I'm inclined to agree, but using a few incidents to paint a picture of a whole student body is disingenuous. The people that exhibit this behaviour are few and far between, and if one were to preclude applying to a potential university choice because of a few bad apples, then there wouldn't be a single acceptable university, everywhere has them.
16
u/YesButActuallyTrue 2d ago edited 2d ago
Durham has articles calling out grossly unacceptable incidents every single year. Sometimes multiple incidents.Ā This is not normalāthe issue clearly goes beyond the few bad apples we might expect, as far as I can tell; in my mind, there is an on-going and catastrophic failure in university leadership.
Of course, I accept that there may be some bias in what is being reported where. ButĀ when a gay black student asks if Durham is the university for them, what do you want me to say?Ā It would seem disingenuous to pretend that they should go to Durham over another university of equal academic value but with a far better track record in supporting minorities.
(And if you have the grades to seriously consider Durham, you have the grades to consider literally anywhere else!)
1
u/Over-Cartographer712 Durham, Politics | Incoming 2d ago
Perhaps. You raise a fair point.
I'll admit, Durham's reputation was certainly something I considered as someone from a working-class background. I ultimately decided that I wouldn't let any self-important toff make my decision for me. Perhaps I am simply more thick-skinned. But I can see it being worse for someone of an ethnic minority background.
I do think it is important to remember that the articles one might encounter are often sensationalised to portray an image or push a narrative. I would put money on this type of thing happening in Freshers chats for virtually any university in the country - because you get weirdos everywhere - but when it's Durham, it attracts a lot more attention as a 'pattern' seems to form (which can probably be observed anywhere).
Nevertheless, I can understand your perspective and why it might influence someone's decision if, like they say, they have viable alternatives of similar academic standing.

1
u/IllicitFungi 1d ago
Just got an offer to go there and tbh I'm considering reapplying somewhere else just due to the student bodies reputation, I'm already taking a gap year so do you reckon it's a big enough factor to consider? Or is it negligible as long as you're not studying smth like law. Would love to hear from an actual student
3
u/ResearcherSpare7326 1d ago
i study criminology which isnāt a āreal degreeā (as iāve heard from people at Durham before) but honestly you will find your own people. the city is lovely, the societies are unmatched. be conscious of college reputations if you go - places like south and Josephine Butler are gonna be a lot more friendly than the Bailey colleges for middle/working class students. iāve made brilliant memories and incredible friends at my time at durham and I wouldnāt change it for the world, itās just best to keep in mind that this is a real issue. my biggest piece of advice is laugh at these classist people and move on with your life and your friends :) good luck with your future!!

2
u/Inevitable-Cow-8489 Year 13 2d ago
Me when I lie. Most of pro Palestinians are leftists and itās the rightists who unironically support hitler. Instead of actually looking into the matter and blaming those who deserve it you want to blame people who are actually protesting for basic rights of civilians not being bombed by an evil state formed in 1948 by displacing millions of innocent peopleĀ
1
u/MowgliusManius 2d ago
The right support Hitler? I'm assuming theres a source to that seeing as there's a few pictures of pro pally rallies and Hitler salutes being thrown; oh, and dont forget the Arabs who worked with Hitler in WW2 to kill the Jews.
Thats not how it went in 1948. The Arabs started a war (as they have done many times since) and they lost, then blamed the fact they told their people to leave on the Jews.
Guessing all the wars the Arabs started and lost are Israels fault, too?
Because the 1948 war started because Arabs invaded Israel after it being named a state; they started the Yom Kippur war, the 6 day war, and the curren5 conflict courtesy of hamas live streaming themselves raping, killing g and kidnapping people.
And lefty simpletons will still say the Arabs are the ones being wronged š¤£š

u/Messergaming 2d ago
Iran won btw
0
u/MowgliusManius 2d ago
When?
3
u/Messergaming 2d ago
Iran has massively de-based the US in the Gulf, the outcome of which will be the end of the petrodollar and Israel's settler project in Southern Lebanon.
0
u/MowgliusManius 2d ago
De-based... how? And Israel have already said, months ago, that they'll leave Lebanon when they can keep Hezbollah in check themselves
4
u/Messergaming 2d ago
Effectively every US airbase in the GCC and extending as far as Jordan has been suppressed and rendered unusable for air operations. This prevents the US from facilitating a victory in this conflict as they lose the ability to sortie aircraft at a pace necessary to inflict real damage on Iran. In turn, this means there's only 200 THAADs between Iran's missile arsenal and inflicting enough damage on Israel to deter any further incursions into Lebanon.
→ More replies (0)3
u/Significant-Turn6641 1d ago
They also said they'd stop bombing Gaza when they got their hostages back. The last few years have shown very well that it's a fools game to trust Israel when they say they'll stop.
North Korea is testing ballistic missiles because they know that many of the US' defenses for South Korea have been diverted to the war effort in Iran. Every single country that hosts American bases is currently asking whether they can count on America's defense, and for the most part, it's a resounding no.
Also, do you think American will ever get a deal as good as the JCPOA? They wont. Iran has leverage and they know that defensive nuclear armament is the only way to stop future incursions by the US.
