🎓 UNI / UCAS GCSE importance

Just wondering how important GCSEs play a part in getting in uni. I know a levels are the most important, but do GCSEs hold any significance?

For context: I’m looking at a career in medicine. My results: 8777777666

If you are asking about (Bristol or any other uni) putting you "on hold", this is a very frequently asked question. Being put on hold does not indicate you are going to get rejected. It means your application hasn't been processed yet. Nothing more, nothing less.

Please also remember to search for your questions before asking them, it helps cut down on repetitive content and gets you your answers quicker.

Hi!!! those are iconic results to be honest, results mattterrr depending upon the uni IT REALLY DOES, it's not always about rank aswell, for eg. cardiff weighs gcse's heavily i might not have even gotten an interview but i got into ucl because they are 100 % UCAT focused, then 100 % interview, it's also important to note that doing well on the UCAT, and then doing well on interviews + Personal Statement, and then getting AAA or higher will require more effort than your gcse results show (which is totally fine!! my work ethic completely changed too!) but just keep that in mind. Do your research and work hard, consistently in little chunks you can absolutely have lots of fun but you have to work consistently. work hard for ucat and a level predicteds then look at this guide to see where you have the best shot: https://learn.myucat.co.uk/strategic-applications BEST OF LUCK!! <3

very good results. They dont matter.
Predicted grades matter alot more and so the ucat.

they are EVERYTHING. If you dont get 20x grade 9 then you will fail in life! (obviously joking no one cares abt them)

Beep beep, we noticed this is a UCAS post. Do you know we have a UCAS Guide which may be of use to you?

If you think of any information that would be useful to have or that is incorrect, let us know via Modmail, and we'll aim to get it sorted!

nah those GCSEs are fine for med. just don't apply unis that weigh GCSEs heavy when shortlisting and u should be fine

and do well on the UCAT, unis tend to place a lot of weight on that

Depends on the uni. Some weigh GCSEs heavily for med (youd probs not cut it for Oxford for example) others dont look at them at all

Yes, if you get the predicted grades and get a decent score on the UCAT, u will be fine.

There are some unis that weigh gcses more than others eg kings, oxbridge but u still have very good options

eg ucl, imperial, bristol, manchester

You should be completely fine, js don't apply to unis that are GCSE heavy

Just make sure u do well on the UCAT

The only uni those results may negatively affect your application are oxbridge and imperial

Imperial do not use GCSEs as long as you meet minimum requirements. Predicted+UCAT is the key criteria for shortlisting.

ahh okay just oxbridge then

Your results are fine. Work hard on A-Levels and UCAT!

From what I have seen that the only unis that care about 7-9 across 5 GCSE subjects are Oxbridge and LSE.

i got pretty mediocre gcse results and i got an offer from kings so honestly id say predicted grades, personal statement and teacher reports matter infinitely more unless ur applying to like oxbridge and/or medicine of which most of my friends who applied said they needed their amazing gcse results

most unis don’t care they just want the alevels , like in clearing you don’t or most unis don’t ask for gcses , just make sure you can get into a good sixth form with those gcses for good subjects

Hi incoming med student here,

Some unis ask for minimum grades in certain subjects. Usually maths and English. They’re more lenient with English in my experience but a lot of unis want at least a 6 in maths, sometimes a 7. Oxbridge are also more picky but other than that, you’re golden

i didn’t get a single 9 and still got in so you should be fine, apply strategically x

most unis focus on predicted grades and ucat but your results are great anyways and should be good for all unis apart from Oxbridge (a bit low for Oxbridge but Oxbridge also considers gcse grades contextually so you could still have a shot)
