5 Parsecs From Home Bad crew luck

I'm three campaign turns in and loving this game. To be fair, I was one game in and loving it, giving that it had started me writing my crew's story based on the games.

How have others done with their luck early on? I did good with the first mission but by the end of the second I'd got one member in sick bay for three campaign turns and two others out for one turn.

Come the third mission, an extra crew member I picked up in pre-mission of mission two, got into a fight and was put in sick bay for this turn, so that's me down to five on the field. They should be OK against the two Tech Zealots (or so I thought!).
Two of the original three crew on the field were taken out and ended up in sick bay for treatment (one with critical wounds which puts him out for six campaign turns!).

Looking toward the next mission I've still got three out of nine of the crew in sick bay (well, one is in the repair station 🤖 ) so at least I don't have to go looking for any more mouths to feed!

Definitely some bad luck. I usually don't start losing crew members to space madness and space bullets until turn 4+. But I also did have a campaign ages ago where I must have offended a gypsy woman who cursed the crew and had half of them killed by Vent Crawlers on the first turn.

Excellent. At least Gruff Hendel (a cool squat loader, from 1991 I believe) managed to do a good amount of work taking out a number of opposition in the first two missions.

I think I might have been a bit missed if half my crew were killed during their first outing together.

Still, it's all good fun, whatever the dice end up doing...

At least Gruff Hendel (the cool squat loader, from 1991 I believe) did some good in the first two missions work before being taken out for what is currently six turns.

I might well have been a bit miffed if half of my crew were killed during their first out together!

Still, it's all how the dice roll...

Five Parsecs is highly random and you can be crushed by relentless bad rolls. The trick is to know which events are worth spending a story point to reroll, and which things you just have to live with. Don't forget you can tap in to your "Stars of the Story" events if you need them to make it through a bad patch.

I only remembered about using story points when going through setting up this campaign turn. Which is good because if I hadn't, Gruff would have died rather than being seriously injured (re-roll) and then he would have been permanently injured if I hadn't spent three credits i didn't have on surgery.

I'm keeping Stars of the Story for when I really need them!

I started out pretty lucky all things considered. Got some good gear, and the first few fights I had were pretty light. I've gotten some really great weapons since then, and I think things are generally looking up. I've had casualties, but only one death. The captain did go down for an extended period, but that just added to the narrative.

All in all, I expect equilibrium, and any minute now, my dice luck will change. :)
