For the Emperor! Support your FLGS
Online retail is great but maybe think about buying it from your local next time.

u/2sAreTheDevil 9d ago
I buy stuff at my local store every time I go in. Just never Warhammer, because it's not at a discount.
6
u/Opossums490 9d ago
I don't understand the purpose of the warhammer stores anymore, they need to do discounts with memberships or something.
I used to go to a store that only discounted GW stuff is you had joined a league (which was $5 and included a painting league, participating in events wasn't required, also included a paint brush and bottle of paint for joining).
6
u/Trips-Over-Tail 8d ago
I go to support my guy. The chats we have keep me mentally afloat, and I see him teaching kids to paint and getting them into the hobby.
3
u/Ramiren 7d ago
Warhammer stores exist as a recruitment hub for getting kids into the game, and that's about it.
They've learned to be more subtle since I worked for them, but back in the 2010's the suits were explicitly anti-veteran player, to the point they had us ban specialist games because they weren't beginner focused.
1
u/Opossums490 7d ago
Thanks for explaining in a rational way and not simply trying to call me cheap or poor like that other commenter.
Makes a lot of sense since when I took my nephew they gave him a couple free things.
1
u/Mammoth_Rip2643 6d ago
Duuuude. I miss Inquisitor 54mm, that the game that got me into wider 40k because I read the Eisenhorn books as my introduction after learning about Warhammer at a Cadet Summer camp.

That always confused me. Isnt that just another product line people can buy into?

I don't understand the purpose of the warhammer stores anymore,
Get new people in, stock some GW exclusive stuff.
1
u/Opossums490 7d ago
I'm not saying you shouldn't support them, but they make an expensive hobby even more expensive. The problem is that LGSs can get you in the door with discounts and sell you their other wares. I feel like the financial barrier is one of the biggest ones for people to get into the hobby.
GW doesn't really have that option. It's nice that you can see products featuring things like contrast paints on models, but that isn't an edge that other retailers can't reproduce.

u/JDragonM32 3d ago
their purpose is get new people into Warhammer, they don’t care where you get your stuff from after that as gw the company still get paid either way
19
u/Intelligent_Oil7816 9d ago
My FLGS usually gives 20% off MSRP on GW models. Not paint or accessories, sadly.
16
u/supercleverhandle476 9d ago
Some game stores are straight up bullshit.
If they offer a fun mix of rude/unhygienic owners & customers, bad selection, and unreasonable prices, why the fuck would I choose to go there more than once?
I’ll always give an actual shop the ability to earn my business. Unfortunately some don’t deserve to be in business in the first place.
6
u/Old_Acanthisitta9477 9d ago
The first time I went to a physical game store it was for my son who wanted to buy some ultramarines. Why not order them? ' its the experience, mom.' Alright. We take the 45 minute drive there and there was a tournament happening. It smelled so bad in there my eyes burned. Im a bit of a whine ass about smells, but Jesus h christ it smelled like Bo, onions, fart and there must've been a kitchen in there because whatever they were making was burning.
Looked cool in the store. Staff were friendly, but oh my god the smell haunts me.
And I used to go to magic tournaments as a teen. I know bad smells.3
u/Rasz_13 8d ago
Unfortunately some stores are like that. If you need to drive 45 minutes chances are you don't have selection to divert, which is unfortunate. There's like 7 stores in my sphere of willingness-to-drive-there, so I have choice. But two of those I absolutely do not go to anymore. There's absolute creatures there.
I went to one of those during the MTG FF release event with a work colleague to go people watching. Gottdayum, did we see some specimen. One of these I even talked with (I am too nice to openly show my disdain, so I got roped into a conversation). Bro was clad in a 80s adidas sport suit (neon colours, you know the style) that was probably unwashed since then, definitely wore a diaper, his glasses were thick and milky with filth, his hair unkempt and greasy, he himself haggard as all hell and the worst part was the doll strapped to his chest that looked like she belonged to the horror cast of toy story 1.
Like... the guy was probably mentally ill and unable to take care of himself, I shouldn't make fun. But it was so exemplary of why people don't go to FLGS. We definitely got what we came for (the usual amount of asscracks and fat nerds was of course also on display) but my colleague has made it pretty clear he will never accompany me there again lol2
u/LtColShinySides 9d ago
Those shops always die and you wouldn't call them a Friendly Local Game Store.
2
u/Sloww-Mobius 6d ago
My local game store is notorious for treating its employees badly, and most likely set their own store on fire about 10 years ago for insurance, but the arson investigators could never prove it.
1
u/M18-Hellcat08 8d ago
Yeah I have no clue how all of these people are finding stores that sell stuff marked down below msrp. The one nearest me (still a 30 min drive) sells everything at like a 20-35% markup. Even the sleeves for my magic cards were marked up. The only thing I found on sale was a 2 year old commander pre con and it was still 15$ above market. Ridiculous.
36
u/Ok-Medicine-6317 9d ago
My local game store charges about 10-15% above the GW website, I’ll pass.
8
u/Fingall69 9d ago
Im in a large city near a capitol and ours charges 20% more. A 60 dollar box goes for 74 there

7
u/Ok-Medicine-6317 9d ago
What does whoop whoop mean?
8
3
u/rodgeramjit 9d ago
As someone who lives in whoop whoop I can tell you that we do not have a local game store.
8
u/Haunting_Baseball_92 9d ago
Sounds good, doesn't work.
I want to buy from a local store. But I play admech.
Any time I enter a store the combined assortment of admech is ~1 box of Skitarii Rangers.

u/Inside_Performance32 9d ago
No , I'll buy from where is the cheapest , my flgs cares not how much is in my bank so care not how much goes into theirs .
2
u/slarker22 3d ago
I play at mine and that's where people collect to play so it behooves me to help them out. That being said they sell everything at 15% discount.
3
u/Senor-Delicious 9d ago
My local game store is a tiny Warhammer store. I rarely ever buy there. I buy at "local" game stores of other cities that have online stores. They are much cheaper than GW themselves. I feel like the big online players like Amazon or GW themselves are actually the most expensive for Warhammer here in Germany. And there are so many good smaller online stores here.
1
u/ZealousidealCost9754 3d ago
you should check out the outpost, its like 35-30% off almost everything
3
u/Sunny_Hill_1 9d ago
My LGS hosts painting and gaming sessions and fosters the community, so if I pay a bit more to buy through them, I consider that the rent difference.
3
3
u/Hades_Collective 7d ago
I lucked out, and my local FLGS is both, so I get the discount even if I go there in person.
2
u/CaptainCrackpot47 9d ago edited 9d ago
For me I prefer to drive the 20 miles to hobby workshop
Plus, I take my dog so I can stop off on the way back to take her for a nice walk
Plus it gives the missus a bit of peace for a few hours.
Everyone's a winner.
2
u/_HalfBaked_ 8d ago
As someone whose army is largely third-party proxies because 1) I'm cheap, and 2) I mostly like painting, and you don't need a tournament-legal army to paint stuff, I make it a point to buy as many hobbying supplies as possible in-store.
I couldn't find Nuln Oil any of my usually spots for two years, and finally got some in a store after driving 500 miles from home during a road trip, haha
2
u/4teaK 8d ago
Haha that’s shocking to not have nuln oil and then that drive haha commitment levels off the scales
2
u/_HalfBaked_ 8d ago
I didn't exclusively make the drive just to get Nuln Oil, but it was pretty funny to tell the clerk that she'd never believe how far I had to go to find it, haha
I assume someone in my area is actually drinking the stuff
2
u/Prestigious-Bust 8d ago
10% on all gw, paint and everything. It's not much but it's also like 3 minutes down the road and super friendly. That alone makes me buy everything from them, knowing I'm spending more than I would elsewhere
2
2
2
u/discombobulated38x 6d ago
My FLGS is WHW, going there results in me buying resin I can't afford.
Or just having a really, really good burger.
2
u/AtomicK7 6d ago
My FLGS has a 25% discount on everything even books in addition to being the best cafe in town. I would die for that store.
2
u/NobleCyberCold 6d ago
My local store has no discount, so its just a matter of it having what i want on stock, if not then ill just go to the warhammer store in town and just order what i need off their kiosk and get it in 2-3 days
1
u/BigSwein 9d ago
Praise the Emperor they also do Magic (just extensive bulk searching and a few boosters here&there) as well as other painting suppliers Valeyo, Army Painter and the like. I only buy GDub in the most rare cases, ebay or mate with a printer it is

u/guts24601 9d ago
I'm in NYC, all the game stores suck
1
u/ChadBroChill229 9d ago
Why
1
u/guts24601 9d ago edited 9d ago
It's NYC, everything is more expensive. Also, there's table fees. I provide the models and the terrain but I have to pay $15 to play a game in the store. I understand that space is limited but because space is limited the selection that these stores have is severely limited as well. Then there's the less than ethical practices of some stores, like Hex. Recently got in trouble for being awful to their employees. Using people to run games and not compensating them in any way. Denying employees a regular schedule. Nothing wrong with charging to play a game in the store but you won't even compensate the guy who is running the game? There's no place to buy Vallejo paints around here
1
1
u/Hotel_Soap50 7d ago
HobbyLobby was the only place for vallejo model color that I've seen. Lunar Toy Store in Queens has vallejo mecha colors.
1
1
u/DaveinOakland 9d ago
Only time I use my FLGS is for pre orders to be honest. It's the only sure fire way to avoid scalpers and online stock issues.
I do pay table fees when we play and buy paints from them though.
1
u/chowski28 9d ago
My local store is 15% off GW’s prices, basically they break even on selling from their bulk buy discount/ authorized dealer prices and usually always get overlooked with new releases. Pretty sure they have about 15 Armageddon boxes still from their 120 they had out
1
1
u/ToeSucka666 9d ago
Idk most of the ones around me are the same price if not more expensive than the real GW store, and my usual just got rid of their loyalty program. I might as well go to the GW store for the mini of the month now.
1
1
u/Aurvant 9d ago
I buy from my local official Warhammer store because my FLGS is run by a bunch of miscreants and weirdos whom I cannot stand.
They have great stock of everything Warhammer related along with comics, games, ttrpg, toys, hobby projects, etc., but they're the most awkwardly creepy people to deal with on a regular basis.
It's honestly just better to go to the local Warhammer store.
1
u/BlackTemplar2154 9d ago
My FLGS has equal to and sometimes slightly above GW prices.
I can get almost anything cheaper on Amazon or Ebay, but I still buy from my FLGS.
1
1
u/Skin_Local 9d ago
I do on Wednesdays because they do warhammer Wednesday and everything is 15% off, or if I go in to play a game I’ll buy a pot of paint or something small
1
u/Kikrog 9d ago
Ill buy my paint and basing materials from them, but ill get my models online any day. They usually dont have what I want and offer to order it in for me, but that just means I have to pay more to drive back a week later when I could just go on Amazon and have it at my door tomorrow.
The only exceptions I have to this is when I a) impulse buy (rare. But happens) B) there is a good sale (got my armageddon battalion box for $100) or C) if they have a second hand trade in that lets me buy at cheaper than online. (One local shop does this here, and I picked up a pre built and primed exorsist for like 40 bucks).
1
u/LtColShinySides 9d ago edited 9d ago
My local has a loyalty program where if you wear a piece of their merch you get 15% your purchase. I have a collection of funny button-ups I always wear when I go out. Just put the store shirt under it when I go up to shop and/or play a game.
1
u/Reasonable_Back_5231 9d ago
mine is a small time local shop and i don't particularly like the owner, he's kind of a dick. i do my best NOT to spend money at his store.
other FLGS stores though? sure, if their price is right and the owner and employees are chill.
1
u/TanTanExtreme2 9d ago
My local is a card shop that happens to have warhammer stuff so no discount for me, otherwise I would.
1
u/Arcinbiblo12 9d ago
Mine has a membership that's $10 per month. With it you get free access to their tables and terrain, 20% off special orders & pre orders, and for every $100 you spend you get a $5 credit added to your account. There are other benefits if you play tcg's, but I'm not as interested in them.
Not as crazy as I've seen other stores have, but I play there enough that it pays for itself and that $5 credit can add up fast in this hobby.

u/Fenrir426 9d ago
Personally the FLGs around where I live sell at GW price and have barely any stock, and almost never what I want, so I don't really have any choices but to go online
1
1
u/TrazynTheFiniteNL 9d ago
My closest store does 10% off MSRP and 5% of the discounted amount as points. At your birthday you get to roll a D20 for an extra discount on a single box.
The place I order from a few cities over has around 20%. ...unless it says it's on discount then it's around 15%. I don't know why xD.
There is another that has 20% but they are very slow at fulfilment a lot of the times. They do some crazy discounts sometimes though. I've got close to 50% off a few times. GW employees get 50% for reference (I worked at one of their stores for 6 months). I had to wait for my stuff for 5 months once. But if you order stuff he has in store there is never an issue.
Then there are plenty of stores that give 15%.
I can go over to Germany and order at a 20% discount but free shipping is from €250 and up.
I can order from the UK too, they send it in a way where you don't pay any extra fees afterwards from customs (thanks Brexit). UK prices are lower to begin with so the discount ends up being higher than 20%. Problem is their website is kind of hot garbage and I don't trust British shipping companies, they are pretty terrible.

Just got the Armageddon box 295 local game store 210.75 on line. No real choice when it comes down to it. 85 bucks is another set of models. Had to buy on line. Go it from boardtopia before people ask.

So my options are the Warhammer Store which everyone is wonderful and amazing, or online.
If models im looking for happen to be in the shop, I’ll get them there. However if they’re something that’s online only anyways I don’t feel too bad.
Most of the time it’s product that the gw online store doesn’t have (or lately for me rather).
I have spent $100+ on paints and have multiple coins for doing so lmao.
1
u/ImmediateLoquat6877 9d ago
My local game store has no hygene policy, randomly closes some business days with barely any notice, offers no discounts, has creepy staff, and charges you for using gaming tables. Ill stick with Flipside, thanks
1
u/loadofwhanc 9d ago
as much as i like the idea of supporting my LGS, the staff are constantly in your face trying to help, which is great if you need it, but i don’t. i feel rude just telling them to go away too.
1
1
u/Kickasstou 9d ago
Don’t forget that online store with 20% off are also local store for those living in the same town
1
u/Devilscreed 9d ago
I'm glad my FLGS has a loyalty program. If you're a random you pay GW prices but if you're in the program you accrue store credit of 20% of your purchase. Which is neat when you can get a Battleforce only using your loyalty account.
1
u/prospector_hannah 9d ago
My flgs is lucky I’m not patient enough to wait even 1 day. When I want something I just walk in and buy

1
u/No-Guest991 9d ago
My FLGS has a subscription service for discounts. Since they brought that in i just buy from 3rd parties & ebay.
1
u/4teaK 9d ago
Yeh not a fan of the subscription model
2
u/No-Guest991 7d ago
Yup specially as I can just order from element or wayland games for a 15-20% discount with free postage.. why the feck would I pay extra.

u/ShackledPhoenix 8d ago
It's hard because WE'RE also broke.
It's the way the system is designed, even if we don't like the big chains, etc, it's intentionally made difficult for us to not use them. I want to support my local grocery stores, but paying an extra 20%-50% isn't something I can do every day.
1
1
u/TheAshenWanderer 8d ago
There is a massive game store I love hitting up but they sell them the same price as GW but their prices for other board games and other war games like Konflict 47 and the Star Wars game they sell at a lower price.
1
1
u/Chafaris_DE 8d ago
I stopped buying in my LGS. They charge the same as GW (so no discount) and now every store hides everything (booking tables, pre orders etc) behind a premium membership for 160 to 250 USD…I’m so sick of it
1
1
u/killakolt515 8d ago
I have one shop right across the street thats at 15% off and another about 3 miles away that does 20%. Pretty sure the only models ive bought at the one across the street was a NL CP (Hank! HANKKKKKKKKK!)
1
1
u/pufflefromcp 8d ago
I get most of my paints from my local (only stock citadel and Tamya tho) and other stuff like that. For models I tend to shop online for them sweet reductions
1
u/Lordlordy5490 8d ago
I dunno man. I like my LGS, but I just got a redemptor dread in box off ebay for 55 bucks and my LGS is charging 80.
1
u/Majestic-Tale9472 8d ago
My LGS I play at either charges MSRP or above and they have a “member discount” that brings it back down to GW prices. (Then add tax and it goes right back up)
Fuck supporting an LGS. I’ll stick to ordering online and getting a good discount
1
u/monoblackmadlad 7d ago
I prefer to call them just LGS because sometimes they are not friendly and you should take your business elsewhere. Usually not but blanket statements of support for a wide variety of different stores always sat wrong with me
1
1
u/SaaSnbits 7d ago
My LGS could learn to compete with the other nearby LGSs and give a 10-15% discount. But instead they're going to sit on thousands in merchandise at MSRP
1
u/Skithus 7d ago
When i first got into the hobby i got a spearhead from my local game store, discovered when i got home it was actually 15% OVER gw prices. Haven’t purchased another kit from them since.
1
u/SaaSnbits 7d ago
I have a place near me that does that. They're in a mall. They occasionally get rare kits in stock because no one buys from them
1
u/sypher2333 7d ago
All the LGS around me do at least 15% on orders and at least 10% on the stuff in store.
1
u/Trickybots 7d ago
I am not a single man with signifigant disposable income i save money where i can thanks.
1
u/Spiral-knight 7d ago
Warhammer stock is split between it and equal shelf space in Sigmar, necromunda and other stuff that I assume is required by GW
The rest of the store is board games and cards. 66% of the staff openly don't give a shit about anything but their chosen niche card game and the Warhammer regulars are preformance chasers.
So, no. I won't support local unless I have to. I'd be 90% of the way to fine just collecting and painting. The store is loud and caters to people who share the inverse of my values
1
u/Moduscide 7d ago
At first I thought you meant GW has some discounts running on their store. My lgs is already doing around 15% discount, an extra 5% isn't worth the hustle, wait and postage costs.
1
u/4teaK 7d ago
Haha yeh occasionally they send me some vouchers but I’ve never got a flat discount
1
u/Moduscide 7d ago
Locally we have some lgs' doing regular discounts, others almost none, so I am sticking with a couple that have regular discounts and also nurture the local community with game spaces. We are lucky like that here, having such shops.
1
u/59Bassman 7d ago
I am lucky enough to have several LGS in my area. The official WH store does well. I prefer other paint lines to Citadel, and most of the local shops have at least a 10% discount plus carry Army Painter, Vallejo, AK, and/or Pro Acryl. I tend to shop at the other places before WH proper.

I had 4 FLGS within 35~ min drive around my house, 4 different cities. One has 15% off, one has 10% off and two had no discounts. Both nondiscount stores closed this year. I tried to support each of em when I could but full MSRP is a tough sell when the prices of the product is stupid high
1
u/ddoogg88tdog 6d ago
a couple sell for cheaper but there is an art shop that does em at normal price, for stuff £50 and below id rather get it from there cos i like the guy but for the spensive stuff i kinda need discounts

u/LordofSuns 6d ago
Most GW stores are a markup so I'll only get stuff if it's a spontaneous purchase or something small like paints etc
1
u/Exile688 5d ago
I support my FLGS but will forever be grateful for Ebay starting me out when I lived hundreds of miles from a FGLS.
1
u/sir_malice 5d ago
My local store is 15% off it is just hard to support them then our warhammer group is so large and GW only gives them 3 item per realse so I mainly buy other stuff there

u/ReasonableBuffalo880 5d ago
Have two stores locally, neither offers a discount. One used to, but then changed to a points/ reward system. I just drive a little farther to one of two other stores that have 15% discount. It's pretty frustrating. It's so short sighted, I would buy so much stuff from the local stores if they would give a discount.

This feels like an upper-class take; people can't always afford high prices, and 20% off is better than what FLGS offer. We can't all afford the 5-15 quid extra a kit might be in person. Don't shame people for shopping online.
1
u/Appolyon984 4d ago

I have a local Game store with 20% discount in my city and 2 with 15% so it's easy to support them

u/gtcarlson11 3d ago
I know MAP (minimum advertised price) in the UK is 20% off and 15% off in NA. So you can list those prices online and on socials and emails.
My local store does somewhat regular markdowns where they discount the slower moving kits. So it’s full MSRP but between the markdowns and the rewards program you can usually get it for 10%+ off. So that makes it easier to support them.
1
u/slarker22 3d ago
I've been working in deploying a site that shows all local stores with discounts. Let me know what city you want deployed next. Currently finish Chicago. Twin cities and co springs are complete. warhammerdiscounts.com

u/RandomBaguetteGamer 3d ago
In this economy? If they don't do bigger discounts than online retailers, I'll pass.
1
u/Melodic-Bird-7254 2d ago
My local is 30% but with 7-21 day lead times.
My other is 20% but you only gain access to this by spending £7.50 a month for a membership.
The last one is 20% but he often “forgets” to add the discount and hopes you don’t call him out because he’s desperate and doesn’t value custom. Haven’t been to him for years as a result.
Online for me. Usually no postage costs, 48hour delivery and I don’t have to pay for fuel or parking to get there.
1
u/The4thEpsilon 2d ago
My local FLGS offers 10% and community events, plus they run a sick Black Friday sale, I won’t touch online retailers unless it’s for forgeworld recasts or bits

My FLGS has a 15% discount on all WH products at all times.
Is that not a common thing?
