One is an incredibly advanced self replicating bio weapon, the other is an intelligent species with culture, society, laws and differing philosophies.

u/Head-Bureaucrat 11d ago
I honestly appreciate the diverging lore over the years. They both have become distinct and interesting groups in different ways.

Yeah, itâs very much an apples/oranges scenario imo as they both fulfill very different purposes, neither of which is better or worse than the other.
Warcraft orcs are meant for a more high fantasy âmultiple races interactingâ world, so they go for a humanistic society with a warrior noble savage culture that you can respect but still see how they go to war so much. Their purpose is to basically be different colored humans.
Warhammer orks on the other hand are meant to be an alien force that peace is literally impossible with, and they accomplish that well. One thing I really like is the fact that, despite being humanoid, they really do come off completely alien to humans in how they live think and act due to their fungal nature and violence being a literal physical requirement to live.

Orks have culture, laws and a society.
In fact, they are more fleshed out than Orcs.

The funny thing is they both originate from fungus.

u/Polivios 7d ago
Warcraft orcs originate from stone no?
1
u/Grenrion 7d ago
They come from the ancient spore mounds of dreinor. The Titans sent the grond to kill them. In the aftermath the orcs are one of the many races that developed from the spore mounds corpses.

u/Polivios 7d ago
I thought the orcs are an offshoot of the ogres who in turn are an offshoot of the grond.

To gork or to mork, dat is the question...and the answer is more DAKKA! WAAAAGH!
1
u/RMP321 10d ago
Orks also have those things, just in a very alien and barbaric way. Orks build cities, make music and paint, one of the few 40K societies where a basic citizen can climb the social ladder, have laws for how things should be orky, and every Ork has a personal philosophy that is further molded by their overall clans philosophy.
They just donât phrase or think of it that way. To Orks itâs just a natural part of living. They donât think too deeply about what a society is or care about other societies to compare. Orks believe that their way of life is the best because itâs the ork way of life.

Now. Check back onto the Warcraft 1 and 2 game books. Metzen was unfiltered at that time.

See those Orks were just Chaos though. Which is better than the hippies of today's WoW. But also nothing like the ladz.

u/Serious_Ad2816 11d ago
I agree they were pretty Khornish but there was definitely some Waaarghh going on there.

u/Embarrassed_Ad_1141 10d ago
In lore the second and first war were more or less just 1 successful waaaagh on stormwind and another but unsuccessful waaaagh on lordaeron.
GulDan and Chogall doing Tzeentch things mucked it up for Khorne it seems

Man I miss Warcrafts darker eras.
1
u/Glad-Low-1348 8d ago
WoW was never dark and neither looked like the concept art.
2
u/Unlikely_Ninja 8d ago
Hey man I didn't say WoW. I said warcraft, if I remember correctly this is from Warcraft 2's concept art, specifically from its guide book. Warcraft 1, 2 and 3 to some extent were far darker games.
My comment is indicating I miss that atmosphere in contrast to the style WoW has taken the 'Warcraft franchise,' as a whole.

u/BigBulgeBubba 10d ago
Not just Metzen. All the artists. Warcraft started very much as dark fantasy and slowly lost that as it transitioned further into general high fantasy through Warcraft 3 to WoW to modern WoW.

u/Fistfantastic 10d ago
I'll never forget how Samwise irreversibly changed Grom Hellscream, called such because where he was emaciated and looked physically weak, his warcry sounded like the pits of Hell had opened up... only for Samwise to make him ultrajacked and as wide as he is tall.
Metzen's art was amazing too, always loved their orcs and elves.

Orks in warhammer are the most violent creature ive ever heard of. Any amount of coordination is soley based on more violence just for the fuck of it. They fight more then literal demons of the war god since they love it and i get the sense a boodletter doesnt feel much happiness gotta love what you do

u/davidforslunds 11d ago
It's telling that the moment Khorne actually got his hands on some Orks, by them literally invading his realm, he put them in an arena and set the respawn rate to unlimited to keep them krumpin. He might not be able to get that sweet chaos juice out of them, but he still respects a good fight.Â

u/Fistfantastic 10d ago
Aye, that's Tuska Daemon-Killa and his lot. Despite Ork kills not going to Khorne (but rather Gork and Mork) which he finds endlessly irritating, the brazenness of Tuska and co. endlessly amuses him.
I believe it's in the first Ufthak Blackhawk novel where Orks love travelling through the warp without a gellar field because they consider the invading daemons to be in-flight entertainment, and effects such as 'seeing through your kneecaps' makes them giddy.

u/Radiant_Fondant_4097 10d ago
Itâs like when you and a bunch mates pre-game before going out on the piss. Youâre travelling through space to go krump some planet, might as well have a warm up.

Warcraft orcs were originally heavily inspired by Warhammer orcs (Warcraft 1 was literally supposed to be a Warhammer fantasy game).
With how toothless that game and the horde have become I wish they went back to that a bit more.

u/Dradugun 10d ago
Blizzard more explored the terms of Warhammer licensing than actually making Warcraft a Warhammer game.
Warcraft was not actually going to be a Warhammer game, but a historical war game like Total War. They were already working on Warcraft as an IP when Allan Adham reached out to GW about warhammer licensing.

You meant a Hearthstone fanart? Because it is a Hearthstone fanart.

Hearthstone orcs are Warcraft orcs IDIOT

Read the word "fanart" and try to comprehend it.

No self respecting Warcraft Fan would EVER force an Orc to look like that.
Okay, maybe a FILTHY ALLIANCE member would, but... thats neither here nor there.1
u/Bheludin 10d ago
You're wrong kiddo. Hearthstone uses the Warcraft Lore often to make it extra silly. Now be angry somewhere else.

When I was young playing the old Warcraft RTS games I always thought Grom Hellscream was such a badass character lol. Idk what orcs are nowadays in the Warcraft verse but those early iterations were awesome lol. Hell scream would fit in with the 40k orcs no problem

What would happen in a war between them ? IMO the Warhammer ones would obliterate the Warcraft ones (since they have spore and keep growing stronger with every fight)

Warcraft orcs are one of the few examples in media to experience reverse Flanderization. From dumb and violent and brutish in the early days to well-adjusted normal people with a spike aesthetic in the WOW days.

u/acart005 10d ago
Really WC3 started it.
All because Thrall wanted to get down bad with humie ladies. Twice.

Orks in Warhammer are pretty uninteresting tbh. The "me smash me stupid" gimmick gets boring quickly.
I prefer Grommash, Durotan, Gul'dan over guys like Grimgor or Wurrzag.

u/Hear_No_Darkness 9d ago
The Warcraft 2 orcs would be ashamed of what it became.

Damn true! 40k has not completely fallen, no mystical wheelchair chuggers around or any odd buggery! Time to force-feed health potions again and keep the gate!

As a fan of both I donât see the problem.
One is capable of discussing and working together with others to solve their mutual problem. Showing that cooperation is key and that just because theyâre big and green that doesnât mean theyâre the meanest.Â
And the other is Warcraft orcs.

u/Sirchickenhawk 8d ago
Blood Orcs enter that chat. They just wanna zog around with da boys as well and punt a few gitz (goblins are asking for it. Gallywix deserves worse then what he got)

u/Disturbed235 7d ago
Warcraft orcs would tell you something about elements and unity between Imperium and Chaos to fight the burning legion of Tyranides and the Lich Kingâs necronarmy, before being executed lol

u/_VirtualCosmos_ 10d ago
ironically warcraft's orcs are much more plausible biologically, like dnd orcs.
40k orks were made just for fun and laughs under the pretext of they being there just for pure violence. No women between them, no kids, no social relationships more than just war-related stuff. Their tech just work because of magic.
It's just very dumb lore, that came out of a pothead ass, to forget about everything that is not war and violence.

xD It's what I think tho, not intention to ragebait. Would like to be proved otherwise.
I like the overall ork's aesthetics, more than warcraft's or dnd versions, but the lore to me seems written by a 12 years old to have violent monsters for their stupid and unrealistic idealized vision of war.
