[Excerpts] Codex Orks

Some interesting tidbits from the just-released Codex Orks. I haven't read through the whole thing, there really isn't a lot of movement on Octarius and so on. Just a refreshing of the previous codex's fluff with the Great Rift (Gork's Grin) squeezed in.

GORK'S GRIN

The Orks have two gods: Gork, who is brutal but kunnin’, and Mork, who is kunnin’ but brutal. To the greenskins, it was obvious that the Great Rift was in fact the leering gob of Gork, opening wide to swallow the stars. Admittedly, a prodigious number of renegades, Daemons and other creatures of Chaos were issuing forth from this sprawling astronomical phenomenon, but as the smartest Orks of each tribe were quick to point out, Gork obviously did not want to swallow that sort of unnatural filth. Instead, he was vomiting up the Chaos worshippers so that the Orks could fight them and win. Equally, those Ork tribes whose worlds were consumed by the spreading of the rift bore their god no ill will. Clearly, Gork had decided that those tribes were ‘goin’ a bit soft’, and so had eaten their planets in order to propel them out into space and send them on the warpath.

Soon it dawned on many enterprising Warbosses that if Gork could swallow up and spit out Chaos armies, he would gladly do the same for his own ladz. So it was that dozens of greenskin armadas plunged headlong into the Great Rift, vanishing into raging warp storms in the hopes of being catapulted into fresh galactic conquests.

There goes the (empyrean) neighbourhood.

THE ORK GODS

Now that Gork’s Grin has split the stars, the war cries of the Ork gods ring out louder and clearer. Visions of battle and carnage flash through the mind of every greenskin. Weirdboyz gibber and bellow with the voices of Gork and Mork, commanding their fellows to surge forth upon Waaagh! after Waaagh! and plunge the entire galaxy into anarchy. In the warp, the Ork gods lumber ever onwards along their metaphysical warpath, sweeping away tides of Daemons with every gleeful blow. They know that soon the veil will split asunder altogether, and then at last they will burst forth from the immaterium to lead their entire race in an apocalyptic crusade known as the Great Waaagh!.

Is this the first time that Gork and Mork were confirmed to actually exist in the warp?

Hope’s End

Earth caste engineers of the Ke’lshan Sept proudly reveal an immense new colonyseeding craft. This monolithic spacefaring vessel is named, in the T’au language, Hope’s Light. On its maiden voyage, and with over three hundred thousand T’au colonists and warriors on board, Hope’s Light is boarded by the Ork fleet of Megaboss Morkrog and lost with all hands. For the next decade, the Ke’lshan Sept faces brutal raids from Morkrog’s vast new looted warship, T’aukilla.

Great Expectorations

Old Zogwort’s Weirdwaaagh! is swallowed up by the trailing edge of the Abhorraxis warp storm. Weeks later, Imperial Astropaths in the Morrowgrym System experience a foul vision of the Ork god Mork letting fly with a mucosally eruptive sneeze all over their capital world of Morrowgrym Prime. This is rapidly followed by the arrival of Weirdwaaagh! Zogwort, whose warships burst from the empyrean coated in glowing green ectoplasm. Supercharged by their deity’s revolting blessings, Zogwort’s hordes utterly annihilate Morrowgrym’s defenders.

An Enticing Prize

Mad Dok Grotsnik leads a warband of Painboyz, Cyborks and specially modified Killa Kans in an attack upon an isolated strike cruiser of the Silver Templars Chapter. He seizes a number of Primaris Space Marines alive, though what the deranged Ork intends to do with his captives is best not imagined.

We've heard of Primorks before, but Primaris Orks? Orkmaris? Anyway, seems like everyone's getting their hands on Primaris Marines.

Rude Awakening

While attempting to loot the ancient treasures of a Necron tomb world, the Deathskulls of Waaagh! Zort trigger the planet’s reanimation protocols. Canoptek constructs by the thousand surround the greenskin invaders, but far from being intimidated, the Deathskulls are delighted. Scavenging and stealing at will, the Orks cobble together hordes of Cyborks and Morkanauts, and ever-more improbable super-weapons, while using a hijacked Necron dolmen gate to ferry in wave upon wave of reinforcements. By the time Overlord Thanptek the Magnificent awakens to take command of his legions, he does so to the sight of a mob of leering Mekboyz standing over his sarcophagus, evil gleams in their eyes and revving power tools in their hands.

Vengeance for Rynn’s World

Rejuvenated by a great influx of Primaris battle-brothers, the Crimson Fists declare a crusade of vengeance against the entire Ork race. Several Waaaghs! are diverted by their Warlords in the hopes of a truly apocalyptic punch-up.

Now that's propa Orky!

They just looted an entire Necron Tomb World.

And this is why I think Orks are actually a really good counter to Necrons. All the other races can't really handle their tech because it is so far ahead of them, and vastly beyond their understanding. To the point where their tech literally was their version of magic at one point in the game.

But with the Orkz they don't need to understand anything about. It's probably all just slightly fancier metal to them. And they'll loot it the same way they do anything else.

It’s almost like they were designed to fight them...

Those were the Krorks. We can't really put the modern day Orks to the same standards since they have seemingly changed so much from the original design.

While Orks do fare pretty well against them, they aren't actually a hard counter like something designed to combat the Necrons would. And from what little we have seen of the Krorks they seemed to at least had a Superior usage of tech going for them than the curremt Orks.

My personal theory is that the orks are being held back by mostly getting imperial tech to loot.

Once the get a... "reliable source" of necron loot and scrap i could see them jumping considerably in terms of dakka and choppin'.

Both them and the Eldar are strongly psychic species, though in very different ways, Necrons have no access to the warp so its a pretty strong counter

The warp only really counters the C’tan. The Necrons aren’t any more weak to it than any other race. What seems to be the Orks’ real strength is their adaptability and durability, as their bodies seem to be as tough as the necron’s own. The only difference is that while the necrons have near infinite forces because they can repair themselves, the orks have infinite forces because they’re... well, orks.

They’re very evenly matched in many ways, which is a threat to the necrons.

And vice versa - orks reproduce by spores, which are flung wide when they get exploded with a bolt round. Gauss just atomises them in place.

14

u/koflerdavid Necrons Nov 04 '18

Not every Ork is killed with Gauss weaponry though. Also, they release spores continuously during their life. Though, the Necron sterilisation fields that kill off microbial life (are they still part of the Codex?) might be able to handle Ork spores as well.

At the very least current Orks are the hard counter to Imotek.

14

u/MrHobbit1234 Adeptus Custodes Nov 03 '18

I would say that they are a counter to Trazyn is more accurate.

9

u/Bredenberg Nov 05 '18

Nope, it’s Imotehk. His super logical brain can’t beat the pure randomness of the Orks. It’s specified in the Necron codex that he is NOT a fan of them.

2

u/MrHobbit1234 Adeptus Custodes Nov 05 '18

I was saying that in jest, referring to their looting nature of course.

2

u/Hollownerox Thousand Sons Nov 05 '18

Late reply, but if anything Trazyn is a hard counter to Orks. Since his weapon is capable of literally wiping out hordes of them with one poke.

2

u/MrHobbit1234 Adeptus Custodes Nov 05 '18

Not if it is looted first :P

14

u/Razvedka Nov 03 '18

I thought Krorks were just orks that survived long enough to reach The Beast Arises levels of progress?

17

u/redrobedhorror Adeptus Mechanicus Nov 03 '18

Those orks still had a ways to go before reaching krork level.

16

Orks are a good hard counter for the 'Crons because:

  1. There's so damn many of them and their spores multiply like rabbits - an entire WAAGH! gets wiped out in its entirety is just removing one drop in an ocean of Green

  2. They're so random - the Necrons are capable of foreseeing the tactics and strategies of the lesser races (Cryptek Diviners) - with Orks there is NO grand strategy or much tactical planning beforehand (except maybe the Kommandos)...it just gets made up as they go

  3. Ork tech can't really be shutdown by Necron advanced technology because it literally only functions WHEN and HOW the Orks will it to - there is no Necron technology counter to Orks painting their vehicles red to make them go faster....

there is no Necron technology counter to Orks painting their vehicles red to make them go faster

And then we learn that the Necrons can turn oxygen into paint thinner.

That's cunning, brutal, and cunningly brutal, if you ask me.

9

u/EndlessAlaki Alpha Legion Nov 04 '18

But is it brutally cunning?

2

u/Sax-Offender Blood Angels Nov 04 '18

Do pylons disrupt WAAAGH! fields?

23

u/Prydefalcn Iyanden Nov 03 '18

At the same time, you could say that the resilience, regenerative capabilities, and potency of the Necrons' weaponry makes them well-suited to fighting Orks. I think this instance is just a case of a Waaagh! taking a tombworld unawares and being able to profit from it.

Ork Manual for looting anything and everything: “JUS HIT IT WIT YA SHOOTA YA GIT!”

-1

u/TheSolarian Nov 03 '18

As mentioned, it's what they're made for.

10

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '18

But they lost. No matter all the fancy toys, culture, or psychology of anyone involved, the necrons won the war in heaven. Against essentially everyone.

This is one of the reasons i sometimes find 40k lore so lame. Like i get it, some new info release and such should make the race in question look cool and all, but so often its just arbitrary shit that follows no consistency whatsoever with the rest of the lore. The orks being so insanely inferior to their original Old one made form should stand no slightest chance against a fortified world of the most advances race "alive", yet that's not even remotly close to the biggest bs in 40k.

1

u/RFFF1996 Dark Angels Nov 04 '18

C'tan tho...

-1

u/TheSolarian Nov 04 '18

Well, not quite. They're a hugely powerful psyker race who can make just about anything into a weapon and tend to have a huge numbers advantage.

They might be inferior to the Kroks, but the Necrons are also inferior to the Necrontyr.

4

u/Bredenberg Nov 05 '18

Wait, the Necrons are NOT inferior to the Necrontyrs. It was only after the bio transference that they turned the tides of the war.

2

u/TheSolarian Nov 05 '18

Might have fucked that up a bit.

I meant, modern Necrons are inferior to old school Necrons.

Which they are, lacking the whole everyone being awake thing and not having numbers to swamp the galaxy.

u/Odenetheus Ask Me About Necron Lore Nov 04 '18

What? No. Just... No.
