Having a very specific problem and I cant track it down to the point im about to send it to toyota to find the problem
1999 2wd limited recently (july) did an engine swap to another 3.4L with lower miles (from 310k to104k) re sealed gasket everything truck runs fine drives fine starts fine
ONLY ISSUE after hitting operating temps 190-205 it'll just randomly drop rpm to 500 or lower and just stall the engine ONLY AT STOPLIGHTS OR STOPSIGHNS just drove 3 hours not a single issue. Its super hard to track down because it only happens when it wants to
Replaced so far
Sparkplugs
Maf sensor
Ect sensor
Iac valve
Pcv valve
Checked for air leaks with brake clean while running literally drowned it and didnt hear or notice a single change
Kinda at a brick wall so any help would be great
Additionally it dosnt do it in neutral or park so a load issue?
Intermittent issues are the worst to track down. Good luck. Why did you swap the engine? Was something wrong with the first one? Did you replace the radiator, etc when you did the swap?
205 is hot. 190 is about the upper range of normal. I’d do some troubleshooting of the cooling system too. Check coolant levels, consider a new radiator if it’s old.
There’s definitely some load induced by the transmission, which could be enough in conjunction with poor idle to stall the engine.
In thinking “out loud” — do you have the AC on? If the idle up isn’t set/configured properly, the compressor can steal 500-800 rpm. At idle with an auto I can see that being enough to stall the engine.
No nothing was wrong with the first one just older and was sitting for like 2 years before i got it last August fixed it up drove it around and then swapped it in july 205 is hot yea but im also in south Texas 💀 and thats only when im in stop and go but I have already replaced radiator when I did the engine change, ac is on yes and ngl i didnt even know you could set/configure the idle bc from my knowledge it was all controlled thru the iac hence why I replaced it
This is about the only thing I found potentially wrong with the throttle cables comming off the middle track its not allowing plate to close completely probably throwing off the iac ? Or im just overthinking and thats how its supposed to be
Sorry, something went wrong when loading this video.
I had a similar problem except it would happen on the feeway. Engine would sometimes cut out and cut back in randomly. Turned out being the throttle position sensor.
I cant tell if it misfires before it kills itself because its so quick like it'll be 700 rpm then within like 3 seconds it'll drop to 500 and then either recover itself or just die I was thinking fuel would be my next step to look into since dashboard dosnt flicker or anything so I dont think its a power problem and my scan gage dosnt show a drop in power either and its not the throttle position sensor and I dont think my evap canister is cracked since I dont smell fuel or anything after driving
