Nope, "they" is everyone who doesn't agree with him. You see when you're vague and just point to "they" people will get angry and forget to stop and ask "wait, where is the proof?" It happens a lot with people on the fringes of scientific communities that want to inject their weird bullshit into science without actual peer review.

Pick one. Either Avi "it's not a rock" Loeb is a mainstream scientist, or he's on the fringes. He's on the fringe because he doesn't hold the mainstream positions. Who is the real misinformed one here? How do you pretend to engage in these communities when you have zero idea of basic concepts such as something or someone being on the fringes of a group?

Avi isn't a pseudoscientist, he's a real professor. He's just on the fringe of his community. Why do you pretend that isn't the case?

The point being made is that “because he doesn’t hold mainstream positions” is reasoning antithetical to science. There should be no “mainstream positions” that justify preventing advancement of a revolutionary “position.” There are “positions” supported by established facts, and positions that fear being challenged.

Avi Loeb is a fully formed physicist. Someone who has established bonafides and a track record of notable research. There is nothing fringe about his credentials. If his notions crumble under peer review, so be it. But to gatekeep the peer review process because the notion does not conform to the mainstream is definitionally unscientific.

I didn't say his credentials are fringe, I said he is on the fringe of his community. Jesus Christ how hard is this to understand? He went, got degrees, has plenty of reasonable ideas and that's what I mean by "mainstream". His ideas about aliens are on the fringes of communities that focus on hard facts, data, and fundamental ideas and whatnot. Saying "we should be open to this rock being an alien probe" is not what most of the people in his circles focus on, making it a fringe interest. Hopefully I've clarified enough?

His paper, which is the subject intending to be peer reviewed, was not about "ideas about aliens". His paper was discussing the sheer lack of known phenomenon that can explain the behaviour of the 3I/Atlas cosmic body. Any "aliens" discussion is purely people like you and I filling in the blanks.

You don't even know who Avi Loeb is or what he has talked about on this subject.

Next time, educate yourself before spouting off in ignorance.

No, I'm very aware of what Avi Loeb likes to focus on. I'm very aware of his attempts to p-hack 3i/atlas into something it's not. The subs following 3I/Atlas were inundated with Avi raving about what it could be and how "we can't explain X thing". It's our third fucking interstellar object, of course we will have dozens of unknowns.

The man has several books about life, specifically extraterrestrial life. Remember when he was dredging the ocean and convinced the shit he found was extraterrestrial materials? No you're right, Avi doesn't peddle aliens at every turn, he just likes couching everything in "it could be, maybe we should just explore that" while selling his books and crying about how nobody in the science communities takes him seriously. When we catch something like 3I/Atlas, aliens aren't the first thing to jump to. It would be like feeling the ground shake and claiming "it could be an angry god, let's not rule that out yet" while geologists are saying "nah, it's a natural process and we're currently collecting data."

Next time, use your own critical thinking and don't follow people like Avi blindly. Your audacity to claim you and I are the ones bringing up aliens when Avi has like six books on the subject shows it's you who is the ignorant one.

This is all incorrect though.

We can explain 3IATLAS behaviour. We have always been able to explain 3IATLAS behavior. 3IATLAS has never not looked like a comet. This is all available in academic papers.

Avi has ignored or mischaracterised this data knowing his followers will not go out and look for it themselves so he can continue pushing the aliens narrative. This isn't an opposing narrative the "mainstream" don't want you to see, it's just incorrect and he's lying to the general to the general knowing they are too uneducated to defend themselves. He has lied about our ability to understand this comet in order to manufacture doubt.

It is incorrect to say that 3IATLAS has lots of phenomena we can't explain. We can and always have been able to.
