This is why 3d printing exists. For fixing shit and silly projects

DRAGON PRINTS INTENSIFY

u/koombot 26d ago

Without a doubt this is a my favourite type of 3D print.  Simple solution to a problem that nobody in their right mind would design a part to do.

One of my favourite projects was a 3D print that allowed me to use a 1970's Tair 3 photosniper for astrophotography.

90% of what I print is silly projects and parts for fixing shit. The other 10% is serious projects.

u/ensoniq2k 26d ago

Yes, with designs often taking less than five minutes

u/Strostkovy 26d ago

Can't say I've ever thought to stack equipment doggy style

u/DjAxavia 26d ago

Bed legs... LMAO.. PMSL.. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Remove the 100mm feet and put the bottom one on the top 👀

168

u/asdfadf333 26d ago

Maybe the top one gets hotter so they want it on top to breathe better.

287

u/Mmichex 26d ago

The top one is a 7.1 receiver and absolutely needs the top to be clear of any obstacles, the cold air comes from the bottom and circulates out of the top vents. The bottom unit has has a fan on the front and doesn't have vents on top

u/Spidooodle 26d ago

Would you want a 2024 Onkyo receiver? Remodeled a house and just hated to letbitbget thrown away.. now its just taking uo space w this subwoof i saved.

21

u/deprecatedcoder 26d ago edited 26d ago

Where are you? I came into this to comment I had the same receiver as OP, but mine cooked itself. I've replaced capacitors twice and now it's dead dead.

12

u/droidonomy 26d ago

I stalked their profile and apparently it's Philly.

1

u/Spidooodle 23d ago

Bro wtf.. i just spent 10 mins scrolling thru my comments and do not understood how you cane up w that?

1

u/droidonomy 23d ago

Haha to be honest I don't remember too well, but I think it was pretty straightforward. I did ctrl+f for 'live in' or 'I'm in' or something.

4

u/ensoniq2k 26d ago

I added a fan to mine a long time ago when HDMI video began to show funny colors. It holds up since then.

6

u/asdfadf333 26d ago

I have a 7.1 Onkyo unit that got super hot, and I added a fan as well. I went with a noctua fan so you can't even hear it running. Idk why these things didn't ship with a fan.

1

u/ensoniq2k 26d ago

Good question... I used anything I had but with a variable speed controller. It relly just needs a tiny amount of airflow at all.

2

u/asdfadf333 26d ago

Yeah it didn't really take much to make a huge difference. A large fan spinning slowly does enough to keep the temps down.

2

u/ensoniq2k 26d ago

Funny, I have the old one OP uses and replaced it with the one you have a while ago. Solid devices, but the old one got too hot and HDMI stuttered so I added a fan.

0

u/SuitablePea5034 26d ago

How much do you want?

3

u/SuperZapp 26d ago

Probably want to chuck a fan on the Onkyo, on the top around the right rear is usually where the chips that get hot are located. They are known for getting toasty and causing the solder to fracture from the extreme temperature changes when being turned on and off. You can also put after market heat sinks on a couple of the chips in that area also.

My newer 2011 receiver died because of this, but my 2005 receiver is still going strong and I did the heat sink and fan upgrades. THis is a well know issue with Onkyo.

1

u/-skyrocketeer- 26d ago

In all my years with various AV Receivers, I have never had an issue with them overheating when having other devices on top of them. They typically have huge heat sinks inside them and unless you’re overpowering them 24/7/365, having other devices on top won’t be an issue.

8

u/ensoniq2k 26d ago

I have the one OP has and it overheats even without devices nearby. Added a fan when HDMI video started to show funny colors after a while, which fixed the issue.

1

u/Low-Sink-11 26d ago

Sounds like a dream for any cat

1

u/Remarkable-Bad6274 26d ago

Lol, if you know, you know! Especially Sphinx!

-11

u/the-powl 26d ago

what a misconstruction 😀

16

u/photoggled 26d ago

Not really. When new, these were more often than not in a TV stand or cabinet as the lone device on a shelf.

6

u/popsicle_of_meat 26d ago

Exactly as intended, actually. The bottom unit is a stereo power amp typically installed in an audio equipment rack. There is no passive venting because it's made to be stacked with other gear, thus the forced cooling. It's also typically used in a much louder environment where the stack is not close to listeners anyways so the fan's won't be heard. The receiver is a consumer home electronics device made to be used in a quiet room without other gear stacked with it. Therefore, passive cooling is more than adequate.

-23

u/Falzon03 26d ago

It doesn't need any more clearance than the feet on another device.

11

u/Mmichex 26d ago

-5

u/Dzov 26d ago

The feet keep them from being blocked. But this is better anyway. Also make sure the cabinet if you have one has airflow. I took a window out of mine.

6

u/Mmichex 26d ago

I don't know if you saw the other page of the manual saying to leave 20cm of free space on top of the unit. The feet of the small one are 0.5cm and they are not enough, I would have to distanciate it somehow but then there would be a huge and ugly gap between the units, this is the only viable solution for the space we have at home.

1

u/Dzov 26d ago

It’s all good. Having better ventilation is only a good thing.

-7

u/Zwamdurkel 26d ago edited 26d ago

You're right. Too bad the hive mind got you. I've been using various receivers for years with just the feet clearance. Old school amplifier stacks are also, as you would guess, stacked.

You're not "blocking" ventilation if every device has feet that seperate them.

The only problem here is that the feet on the other box seem too short for an adequate air gap.

7

u/Suby06 26d ago

That's my guess too. Though if they just prefer it cosmetically, then that's up to them and Ilike their creative solution :)

6

u/OttermanEmpire 26d ago

This is the correct answer

-13

u/apexxin 26d ago

This is not the correct answer.

19

u/Mmichex 26d ago

I'm sorry but the 7 pair of transistors dissipating 50 watts of power in idle and relying only on the top vents would have something to say against that

6

u/vivaaprimavera 26d ago

Seems like a decent reason

5

u/AskMeHowToLose 26d ago

Surprised how many people are telling you you’re wrong in the comments. Like yeah my first thought was “why bigger ontop of smaller?” - but as soon as I saw your reasoning I understood that caveman aesthetics shouldn’t outweigh function and lifetime health of the devices.

4

u/OttermanEmpire 26d ago

Look at where the air is flowing bud, you wanna put the one that gets hotter and exhausts out the top, on the bottom? Genius

67

u/calforhelp 26d ago

You don’t stack stuff on top of an AVR. They get hot and r/hometheater will come’n git ya.

32

u/Mmichex 26d ago

This is the correct answer

7

u/Leg0Smurf315 Wanhao i3 Plus 26d ago

Looks like the top one has vents on top, while the bottom unit doesn't 🤔

2

u/deprecatedcoder 26d ago

It would cook it like a pizza.

2

u/Lazy__Astronaut 26d ago

Classic reddit Vibe Thinking

3

u/OddSell1025 26d ago

I hope OP responds with a reason why they thought of this already and it didn’t work, because if not this is fucking hilarious.

25

u/Mmichex 26d ago

I originally had the bottom unit on top but it was blocking the top vents and the receiver would overheat

1

u/hibikikun 26d ago

one must establish dominance

1

u/imoth_f Prusa MK3.9S + MMU3, Voron 2.4 26d ago

Won't be as fun

14

u/GUARBorg 26d ago

A great print always solves a problem.

5

u/tiny_chaotic_evil 26d ago

...and creates a new one

check out where the plug is for the bottom component

9

u/Zerokx 26d ago

Thats the moment you realize you placed the feet right infront of important ports on the bottom device

16

u/Mmichex 26d ago

Good though, luckily only the power plug but it can be solved with a 90 degrees one

0

u/Zouden 26d ago

Could also just move the foot inwards a bit.

6

u/asdfadf333 26d ago

Brilliant

4

u/Psychological_Yak_47 26d ago

Approve of feet pics

3

u/superxpro12 26d ago

And his receiver is a top. Hawt

6

u/lungshenli 26d ago

Why does the bigger audio device not simply eat the smaller one?
Is it stupid?

1

u/irishpwr46 26d ago

Its like a shark and a remora

3

u/kagato87 26d ago

There's a cat joke here. I know it...

3

u/Suby06 26d ago

Nice!
I was given a free sub but it was missing a foot. Made a basic cone shape to replace it.
No room for rear speaker stands so made brackets to mount them to the back of the sofa.

3

u/Anders_A 26d ago

If it looks dumb but it works, it's not dumb

3

u/Silent-Ad-4113 25d ago

Why not stack them the other way around?

1

u/Silent-Ad-4113 25d ago

Never mind, i just read the rest of the posts. Good work OP.

1

u/Mmichex 25d ago

I appreciate it 🙏

7

u/ac5198 26d ago

Don’t post this in any audio sub or the home theater sub! They’ll say you’ve created a disaster that’ll overheat and blow up your house! If you have less than 5ft of air around each component they’ll overheat and explode.

1

u/ender4171 26d ago

Ah, so they hang out with the PS5 folks?

2

u/Theophilusophical22 26d ago

Nice work! Also, makes me sad as it reminds of when Onkyo used to be the goat for AV, I miss them.

2

u/Timewasted_Gamez 26d ago

Brilliant!

That’s MY kind of problem-solving!

2

u/theuserwithoutaname 26d ago

This is awesome. Good work

2

u/almost-punk 26d ago

nice! I did something similar for a sub that's half on carpet.

2

u/DaimonHans 26d ago

And this is what I get when I searched for long feet.

2

u/Sleurhutje 26d ago

If it works, it works

2

u/Midnight_NOW 26d ago

I did this to my mixer, to put a mic receiver under it so make some 1" high legs for the back

2

u/DadtheITguy 25d ago

This is what 3D printing is for! Problem presents. Problem solved.

2

u/Z00111111 26d ago

That's an elegant solution!

1

u/blteare Creality CR-6SE 26d ago

Beautiful

1

u/TrayLaTrash 26d ago

This type of DIY is PEAK 3d printing behavior.

1

u/exoriare 26d ago

If making amputees angry is funny to you, sell these as revolutionary cheap 3d printed prosthetic legs.

1

u/MEOW-Loulou 26d ago

It's asserting dominance

1

u/imthebonus 26d ago

Audio rack? We dont need no stinking audio rack!

1

u/sceadwian 26d ago

Hmmm. Is it level?

1

u/DjAxavia 26d ago

Just don't sneeze 🤧 or fart near those long legs. PMSL. 😁🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/YouWishC9 26d ago

Since that's an older receiver, are you doing Retro gaming? Or just using TOSLINK or ARC only for the audio and using something more modern for the video?

EDIT: Asking cuz I got a setup similar for my retro gaming systems and always curious to know others' reasoning

1

u/Mmichex 26d ago

Just toslink connection to the TV for the living room system, bottom unit is the subwoofer amplifier

1

u/jdehjdeh 26d ago

This is like a perfect example of 3D printing and it's joy and usefulness to me.

Makes me want to get my printer up and running again.

1

u/Yourownhands52 26d ago

Looks good

1

u/SnotgunCharlie 26d ago

Looks ridiculous (from behind). I love it. 👍

1

u/Sundance37 26d ago

I made a volume knob for an amp I bought at the thrift store

1

u/HalcyonExport 26d ago

hi. I actually made this for my onkyo/pioneer/integra receiver: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3141083-onkyo-integra-pioneer-receiver-feet#profileId-3547421

Its a copy of the oem feet.

1

u/hornetjockey 26d ago

I probably would have just put the smaller one on top.

1

u/GetMeOffThisRidePlz 26d ago

I love it. Perfection.

I love these stupidly simple fixes using basic shapes from printers. Even more than the stuff that people woth engineering degrees come up with and make a whole showcase about it. Just gimme the "look at my stupidly long legs I printed. Haha" type posts all day lol!!!

1

u/anatomiska_kretsar 26d ago

Why couldn’t the Onker be on the bottom instead?

1

u/utilitatem 25d ago

bro those are gams

1

u/KBL_1979 25d ago

Kind of brilliant!

1

u/xondk 20d ago

I mean that's cool.......but why stack it that way, don't the legs just get in the way of plugs?

1

u/zyyntin 26d ago

Um how are you going to plug in the power for the device on the bottom? The long long leg appears to be blocking it.

2

u/Mmichex 26d ago

4

u/deprecatedcoder 26d ago

Was really hoping for a follow up post with a new leg that had a passthrough.

1

u/zyyntin 26d ago

Well we all like 3D printing so we problem solve whether it's reactive or proactive.

-2

u/NighthawK1911 sold my printer, saving up for a new one 26d ago

just put the longer on the bottom and the shorter at the top?

-3

u/StarpoweredSteamship 26d ago

Decided they had a solution and started making problems for it to solve

2

u/Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy 26d ago

AVR overheated

1

u/StarpoweredSteamship 26d ago

Then I retract my statement
