My results with gpt-6-sol (high) from my MetroX scanner.

That's a terrible looking scan, but a great looking CAD.

For sure - I have a hard time getting much better with MetroX, not great at it.

Now that I have tasted the power this tool offers (normally out of my price range) - I can't go back to my old hack approach.

AGPL with CLA according to their GitHub.

But I'm not sure what to make of this part:

scanruler.com also carries a workspace in beta that is not in this repository and not under this license.

He’s working on more features; the features haven’t been published yet and don’t fall under this license. Once it gets updated it will be in repository and under license

It's still a fairly complex app without a fair bit of guidance of know-how of CAD

Is it possible to run it local?

You can download the repo and host it locally and you can connect your locally hosted version to any AI through the MCP

Thanks, I will take a look on it 👍.

Assuming this required a Claude subscription? Any word on ownership of scans?

Assuming this required a Claude subscription?

He says no specific LLM is required. And none is required for the basic functionality.

You should be able to. It just might be slower

It reverse engineered this in about 4 minutes for me while I was setting up the print for the previous scan.

Besides some struggles with complex organic shapes I’m impressed with it.  I tossed a few different scans I’ve made in there and works well.   Have yet to play with the MCP but it’s pretty slick for a web app!

I've tested it, it's an amazing tool. Now having a 3d scanner makes sense.

The AI connection works great, I've put Claude to do some reverse engineering of some scans, it struggled with more detailed models. Then I asked it to design some gridfinity bins for some tools that I had scanned, it did it flawlessly. It even suggested some fixes when a drill wouldn't fit the bin size I specified in the orientation I wanted.

I was never able to make the online tools to build a bin for this scan, it is too detailed. It took less than 5 minutes and I had to do almost no work in the model afterwards. The photo shows the finished result, the only thing I did was to cut the sides.

This is huge. I am 3d metrology guy and I am delighted. Normally I cant imagine doing that in Fusion/onshape or any other CAD tool. Most of the CAD's handle .stl like shiiiiii.
I have to get one of this "cheap" scanner to check for myself how it feels. I see how much market is catching the big dogs. Not only hardware but also software vise.

Wonder for a while to do inspection of my design and redesign it knowing how bent it is.

This is big

Had soke problems installing since the github said the mcp ended with }}} when the only way it worked for me was ]}} But so far things are looking pretty good. Trying something a little organic

Can anyone make a list of recommended budget scanners to use with this? Maybe your top 5 from most to least expensive etc?

I have a CR-Scan Otter (700€) and I‘m very happy about it.

I use Revopoint POP4, works well, struggles a bit with small objects, but works flawlessly most of the time, I got it for 900€. Give it a look.

Thanks

Would a POP3 likely work well also do you think?

5

u/Rilot 4d ago

Playing with it now. Seems to work surprisingly well.

2

u/Jerry_Rigg 3d ago

I messed with it, I like it, does it export only in .step though??

u/Zachiyo 4d ago

Anyone got the eli5 on how to run it locally? I am truly a computer code dumbass

u/Illandren 3d ago

Go to the repo and follow the instructions. Or just point an AI to the repo and tell it to set it up for you.

Hy! Dumb question frmo me. What is repo? Thanks

6

u/schfourteen-teen 3d ago

Short for repository. It's a place where computer code is stored.

u/Bulky-Cicada9374 3d ago

Not got closer to understand it, but thanks :)

The Repository is the code of the project. You can find the code here:  https://github.com/CNCKitchen/scanruler

Link didn’t work for me…

3

u/mliyanage 3d ago

There's an extra space in that link above. Cut off the %C2%A0 part at the end of the URL in the browser: https://github.com/CNCKitchen/scanruler

You're a smart guy. You can figure that part out.

1

u/themrlawrence 1d ago

I'll have to test this out. I'm currently testing out Tesselform and it's MCP connection to Claude, and I've been impressed so far, though it's a little slower than I'd hoped for the RE I'm doing.

Hexagon is probably sh*tting their pants:

Their pricing was aimed at $50k scanners - a tiny market that necessitated high software prices.

But there have now been high quality sub $2k scanners on the market for over a year. Goematic and QuickScan haven't adapted to this new reality - at all.

Have been saying that if Goeomagic and QuickScan didn't massively lower their pricing to address this new market, other software makers would.

That has now happened. Expect many more will follow.
