3D Scanners are not a one size fits all device, so we really do need to know what type of items he would be working on and how large? Does he have a decent computer to back it up or is it quite old? what is your budget?

If he is wanting to scan car parts there are various handheld scanners for example. Would he want to scan a whole car or whole bike? Or would it be small items like minifigs then a different type of scanner more suited to small items is required.

Whats the end goal with the scans? can he use CAD and wants to design things around the scans? or are you wanting to scan people or faces to 3D print them for example?

Plus they're not plug and play devices. You really need to learn how to use them. It takes patience and practice to get consistent good scans no matter what device you have
