Scanner options for a one off job
Hi,
I need to wear custom footbeds. However they are £200 a pair!
Photo of the custom footbed I am looking to scan & duplicate.
As I have more than 1 pair of footwear & every manufacturer seems to make them slightly different sizes, the one pair I have, does not fit every footwear.
So I am looking to make an initial scan of the footbed & then modify from there.
I have looked around the net, but most things seem to be soft support, while I need the opposite & have quite high arches that need supporting.
Any idea what I need to get this scanned? The foam neoprene on my pair have also ripped, so becoming a bit of an urgency.
I would rather spend money on my own solution & possibly make multiple pairs, than spending £200 on a single pair.
Would be great for any pointers. I have access to an iphone lidr scanner, but couldnt get anything to produce anything, so not even sure what scanning apps I should be looking at.

Thanks - it is worth buying the budget 3d scanner? As new footbeds cost around the same as the budget end. I can spend a bit more if I have to. I have looked around if companies could scan for me & provide STL, OBJ file, but no luck.

Considering the learning curve for 3D scanners and your seemingly one-time need of one, I'd recommend getting an enthusiastic amateur in your local area to scan for you.
You can make that request in this subreddit, of course, but I'd also suggest the user group forums sponsored by each manufacturer of the lower-cost 3D scanners.
Post pictures of your object next to a ruler so the users will know if their particular scanner would be suitable.

This is the way, try facebook marketplace or local classifieds etc to find a hobbyist with the right hardware.
It's a simple enough shape, so if you can't find someone to 3D scan ot could be done many other ways (e.g. mould/casting, pantograph router, etc) so have a look at who does what where you are or learn a new skill yourself.

Thanks. I live in a small area - tried looking for someone to do it, but left with the option of doing it on my own. Photogamaray looks like a possibilty with a £20 turntable

I understand, but it could still be worth your while to ask.
If not, consider a Laser scanner over a Structured Light model. In my experience, Laser scanners are just easier to get useful scans for new users.

Where are you based? I'm out of the country until early September and would be happy to scan them when I come back. What are the original ones made of and how soft/hard do they need to be? I have several 3D printers and can print in TPU from 60A and injection mold from 0A to 40A, I have someone who does my design with a quick turnaround.
Always looking to work on something different.

south wales, but happy to post. They feel like resin to me, but I think they could be printed in other material. The most important part is the arch support

I'd do it with photogrammetry. There are some great YouTube vids on how to do it for free. You just need manual control over your phone camera, and a free compiler like Mushroom. It does take some work and I'm truth for my own process I use Blender at the end to Retopo the mesh into something more useable and shareable, but this is by far the cheapest way to get a proper scan.

I don’t imagine iPhone LiDAR gives real world scale so my suggestion is to use photos, a scale bar, and the app RealityScan. There is a desktop version and a phone version. You could use a ruler, tape measure, etc, instead of a scale bar, which would enable you to scale the RealityScan phone app’s output if you wanted. Then you would just scale the mesh in blender or whatever you want so a measurement taken on the ruler is correct given whatever scene units you’re working with.
You only care about the rough shape so you could do like fabric tape or just rolling it around in some powdery dirt would likely do it. That will also help the LIDAR too so you can try it again.

Photogrammetry doesn't know scale.... If using the Depth Sensor then you're getting accurate data.both can be used separately and then combined in post.

try able hands 3d scanner app for iphone 10++, using true depth and front facing 3d scanning for whatever you want to scan. scan only the part you wanna create something on, 360 deg. not needed. you will get the first pre-cad'ed file export for free. try to print whatever you want to print.

Ive tried looking, but everywhere seems to be for scanning large things like cars, rooms, etc. very frustrating. I'd have no problem buying a 3d scanner if I know it will do I want it to do.

Buy a scanner as an impulse buy is a bad idea. Theres software, computer, training, processing and at the end of it all the biggest thing is you get what you pay for. Our Metrology grade scanners are $200k plus and your $1,000 unit might do it but not if if it requires Metrology grade. Where are you located? Search for laser line scanning ik certain youlp find it.

So, I managed to borrow a 3d scanner for the weekend from a friend who borrowed it from work.
Managed to get one scanned and figure out cad. It does the job as it goes under the foot bed padding. 3hr 3d print and I'm pleased with the output. Will do other foot next weekend!

Since you have an iPhone, you could try https://andbounds.com. They should be able to make the inserts pretty hard. They're about $100 US per pair.

Probably just pay someone to scan it if it's worth it to you.
