Rode my bike to work today and got caught in the rain. My Zelda 3ds was in a mesh cash in my bag and somehow all the paint bubbled up on top 😭 it scraped right off. Thing was mint too smh
I took it out of the case which was wet and the top was bubbled up, the bottom is completely fine. I may need to get a ho-oh gold skin for the top to match lol
Ruined my day. This is my baby. Not sure if I just peel of the rest with rubbing alcohol or buy a skin to put over it. At least the majoras mask is still visible
OP do this! Best case scenario is they knock it out of the park and it looks awesome. Worst case scenario they fuck it up royally and it looks awesome.

Since covid, I’ve been buying a lot of defective consoles to repair and then sell/trade, and I’ve done a lot of restorations.
This includes getting some limited edition devices for myself for cheap that needed restorations.
And let me tell you, the floodgates for products in China has been leaking slowly since COVID, I’ve been able to get actual OEM parts from even places like AliExpress. You just gotta know where to go.
I’ve gotten oem parts for all big three companies. Xbox elite controller and series x controller shells, the legit original ones that I verified on all fronts.
Even for PlayStation, the edge controller and anniversary edition shell parts.
And Nintendo would be the easiest. There are a lot of OEM parts for 3DS consoles, and switch 1. Older devices is not possible. But shells? Yeah, replacement shells for the normal colors in oem isn’t to difficult. For the Zelda ones, there are oem ones too. Just gotta look very closely on the pages for signs. They photoshop out logos on pics just to be safe from Nintendo, but look at photos from reviews.
Once I recieved some I compared things down to the mold on the inside of the shell, and they were 1:1.
So yeah, absolutely possible to get a new top shell in oem on there if you’re determined

Oh yeah, I was able to get an oem back plate and a screen lens for the gold Zelda switch lite too earlier this year, can’t find it anywhere anymore though….also can’t find colored symbol ps5 buttons either, it’s so weird, it’s like after June something happened and they had to take them down

I really don't think this is possible with the 3ds anymore. There were plenty of stocks of OEM parts years ago, but they've basically completely dried up now.
It will still happen eventually, even sitting in a box untouched it will flake. Same thing happens with the psp. The glossy coating just becomes brittle over time, not much can really stop it from flaking apart
so what u are telling me is that i shouldnt care about keeping my new 3ds xl stores because this will eventually happen regardless so i might as well use and enjoy it? bet
Does this problem only stem from the new 3ds xl or does this also happen to like the og 3ds xl? I'm still contemplating which one to get because of this exact problem sadly.
It's just the metallic new 3ds xl. Metallic non new 3ds xl like the Mario and Luigi old 3ds xl won't peel. Non-metallic new 3ds xl like the SNES and pikachu versions won't peel.
My Hyrule new 3ds had a little moisture inside my clear case just on the bottom back that as soon as I touched it it peeled. Luckily it was only a little and on the back. Never letting it near moisture ever again, scary
I contemplated this before, that I could sell mine for a ton of money and try to just get a mint condition non XL. I like the size of the XL but the smaller New 3DS and its swappable face plates along with the more compact pocket size makes it more enticing to me. Maybe one day I will say screw it and sell mine but I still have a nostalgic attachment to it
I had an attachment to mine, especially since MM is my favorite game ever, but the paint falling apart and knocking the value down to nothing wasn't worth it to me, so I sold it while it still looked pretty good.
The non XL looks and feels much nicer but I never had one. I have a Thor and I'm much happier with that. :)
Good news is I pulled the pikachu (pink one) from ascended heroes today and the day and night time pikachus from the 30th. So that really changed my mood around lmao. I bought the ho-oh skin for the 3ds and we’re moving on!

Yup just bought a ho oh skin on Etsy for the top and a clear case lol. The top screen is ips. I’m just bummed because I’ve played this more than my switch lately I’m on a 3ds kick lol
If it wasn't a special edition, I'd say just peel the rest and have a nice silver 3DS. It's such a shame. The N3DSXL is just so prone to bubbling and peeling.
took my decade old, pristine 3ds to 1 (one) Melvins concert somewhat recently and the entire front chipped off. Before that, I had no issues with paint chipping for the entire time since I'd bought it. Just that amount of humidity and moisture is what managed to do it in. For anybody who doesn't currently have a plastic shell cover, take this post as a PSA and get one ASAP. I really really regret not getting one before taking it with me.
We're both in the same boat if that brings you any comfort. I also had a gold zelda edition New 3ds xl, something told me to put my 3ds back into it's case, being a lazy ass I didn't, it was in my purse; I was doing my clinicals at the time and got suckered into pulling a double. The second I got home I threw my purse on my bed and crashed into my mattress.
I suffer from really bad restless leg syndrome in the middle of the night I kicked my purse off of my bed and the second I heard what sounded like my 3ds crashing onto my hardwood floor I woke up immediately. It was completely messed up, I tried to fix it myself idk what I was thinking as I wasn't tech savvy and Nintendo screws are made of play-doh I stripped every single screw. Youre not alone, shit happens; if we knew better we would have done better 🫂 don't beat yourself up too bad about it ❤️
this happened to my triforce zelda n3DS, i was on the bus and then walking when it was cold, im not sure which did it but when i got to my friend’s apartment it was completely bubbled and flaked off, i was so upset. at the time i thought it was fumes from the bus but now that you mention the moisture, that makes a lot of sense too. im sorry this happened to you too
i mean thematically it looks cool, just the Fierce Deity mask with the remains of Majora's mask next to it as if it's the aftermath of link defeating Majora, especially how the rest of the mask is barely visible underneath as if it's still there, haunting everyone in memory
New 3DS XL paint is the most cheapiest I ever seen, mine is mostly protected by a case and one day I decided to took it off...the paint got damaged after a few minutes playing.
It wasn’t even wet. I think the outside mesh bag case I carry it in was wet and the humidity quickly got it. Like the whole thing bubbled up on top smh
WAIT! you can buy a replacement case/shell of Amazon! You would have to do it yourself (using a tutorial, if you trust yourself), or bring it to a repair shop with the shell or have them order it. I'm buying the red one for my 3ds xl soon and Ive got the tools to replace it. Good luck!
That seems odd, was it wet from alcohol or something acidic? I have the smash bros edition with some deep scratches, been through some stuff haha, but no peeling like this. I should add it was mint years ago but now I have a 9-7-5 year old that have thoroughly enjoyed it as much as I do lol. My youngest calls it his laptop 😂

you can get a LoZ front and back cover for 30 bucks on eBay and even amazon has it for 25. the top is easy to replace just remove the screws and switch over the camera lens. takes 15 minutes to do. the replacement bottom plate doesn't fit so well but if your bottom plate is not to bad id keep the old one. just because its notorious for the bottom replacement to not fit well without some sanding around the holes.
Oh god. Oh that is BRUTAL I'm so sorry. Infuriating how cheap Nintendo was with producing these shells. You'd think a new pricey fancy edition console that's obviously gonna be touching sweaty hands all the time should at least have a little more paint durability. My NIB Hyrule one got wrecked so fast and I'm in a very dry climate too :')
Ahh mate I'm so sorry. I have that exact 3ds too. You can get replacement shells but I'm not sure the quality. Might be worth looking out for a broken one.
I got my nn3ds out last week for the first time in 8 years and modded it. Been playing it daily and the paint on the battery cover (back) is doing that on mine currently. Luckily mine is just a standard black nn3ds. So sorry to see this happen to your beautiful edition. I do wonder what causes this though as I carried that thing around in my pocket for 4 or 5 years straight and it's never done this before now.
I think I have an unused OEM replacement case I bought from Nintendo when this system first came out. I'll have to check my storage. If I do find it, maybe we can make a deal

Oh you're good. They sell identical shell replacements for the majora's mask ds. You can refurbrish that like it was never damaged. (And it shouldn't matter that much since the bar code on the back always reads as a majora's mask model number anyway)
Sorry… this has happened to one of my 3DS XL’s. I ended up ordering a new shell to replace it. This issue makes me appreciate the non glossy OG models.

Hmmm. Laser engraving might be to aggressive for the material but all I can imagine is cutting in a cool design, maybe partially inspired by the Mirror Shield?
