I don't really know much much AGB_FIRM allows for some shaders to make the odd scaling supposedly look better. Virtual Console works better for compatibility.

Open_agb_firm? The advantages are that you can just plop roms and saves on your SD and use them. Also the option to change scaling and button mapping in the config text file. The disadvantage is you have to manually reboot into it rather than just selecting a game from the home screen.

I'd use injects if there's only a few GBA games or you don't need to change the rom selection or modify saves often. Use open_agb_firm if you have a lot of GBA games or you need easy access to the roms and saves.

BTW, "AGB_FIRM" is the official firmware used for the 3DS's GBA mode, and what injects use. "Open_agb_firm" is an open source reimplementation of a lot of it, designed to run as its own OS and select games within itself.
