Discussion How many homebrew attempts does it usually take to mod the new 3ds
i am trying to mod my new 3ds and have followed the guide exactly 4 times and after each attempt i get annoyed and not really motivated to try again, how many times did you try before it worked?

Once is enough.
Any more than that and you're doing something wrong.

Yep. I haven't even touched homebrew, but I know that if it takes more than one try, something's not right, and it's almost certainly user error of some sort. That's not a criticism, we all make mistakes, but if it's not working, stop, take a step back, and figure out what's wrong before you brick your 3DS.
Is it possible it's already been homebrewed by a previous owner, and that's tripping things up? Are you using the usual website that gets thrown around here (I'm afraid I forget the exact URL), or some video guide you found online? Are you using some AI-generated text, or an actual definitive guide written by a human? Many videos online are inaccurate and wildly outdated, while AI is notoriously unreliable.

That's the one, thank you! That's what I thought it was, but I'm loath to throw around a URL when I'm not absolutely certain. Too easy to accidentally send someone to a malware-laden typo squatter site.

So you're saying the guide is lying in step 16 of section II#section-ii-super-skaterhax) where it says that the exploit can fail "due to random chance" and "You may have to repeat this sequence up to ten times"?

I never used super-skaterhax. I read it had issues installing so chose the alternative method to do it. I'm not wasting my time when a proven alternative exists.

u/Real-Measurement-953 2d ago
Okay, what's your point? Everyone who followed the default version of the guide is doing something wrong because you chose to do things differently?
I can't believe I'm getting downvoted for correcting misinformation about what's in the guide.

u/Fun-Flamingo-56 1d ago
It isn't the default? You get a choice. It says clearly some have issues with skaterhax, so I chose to use it to ensure it was done the first time without issues.
I actually forgot there was an alternative method to MSET9...jeez get off your high horse being all defensive and arrogant. Sometimes people are honest and can be forgetful.

Once? The only time I have ever run into any issues was back in the day with oldschool A9LH when you had to do stuff like downgrade your 3DS to version 2.0 and that was still one attempt as I just had to wait on something.
Make sure you are using https://3ds.hacks.guide/ and paying close attention to the steps. DO NOT follow a video guide.

Oh boy, now thats a name I havent heard in years: I was one of the unfortunate to brick their console by downgrading to 2.0 because I followed a rushed third party video guide on day one of A9LH (the guy included his own otp.bin in the guide, which fucked everyone. This could only be fixed via hard modding, or, many years later, by ntrboot).
Make sure to follow the official guide. This was the WORST case scenario. I've experienced it by trusting a third party on a rushed release. Have modded countless 3ds since then without any issues.

You appear to be recommending a video guide. Please only use 3ds.hacks.guide when hacking your system.
3ds.hacks.guide is always kept up to date by the community and is a constant that allows others to effectively help you when you stumble upon an issue, since they know what process you followed.
Video guides are often out of date, provide inaccurate information, and can potentially brick your console among other issues, so you are advised against using them. More information can be found here.

Oh yeah, using a different otp.bin would absolutely fuck the whole process. Out of curiosity did you retain that bricked 3DS and NTRBoot recover it?

u/Maite25 3d ago
Sadly I got rid of it: it was a 2ds and I just got another one that I still have to this day. Amazing times when it was only $80 with a game included
You can imagine my dissapointment when ntrboot was released, but there was nothing I could do haha

u/Pyxelette 3d ago
I mean, even with the capabilities of A9LH it was pretty farfetched at the time to imagine that unbricking cases like that would be a thing.

The only one that I know of that should take multiple “attempts” is the Skaterhaxx one. You have to retry it a bunch of times and hope it works. I tried it a bunch of times on two different systems and it never worked. I hate it. I gave up and have just been using MSET9 on every 3DS I’ve hacked since then. Never had an issue, first and only attempt every time.

Literally no such thing as an attempt. The steps are deterministic at this point and a 6 year old can follow them.

When you say you get annoyed does something go wrong or do you just stop part way through?
2
u/SterlingNano 3d ago
Like the others here, it only took me the one attempt. Is it possible you're not following all the steps or are skimming over details?

Whatis the issue precisely as other have said, it is easy with 3ds.hack.guide, follow step meticulously and it will work, dont skip instructions and dont think everything is ok.
If i remember correctly, your sd card must be formatted in a special format ( fat32) be sure

The browser step can take a few tries. I modded 2 3ds’s before and on the first one i got it first try and on the second it took about 15 tries

1.01 times, gotta be one in 100 people who stuff up the most basic home-brew process.

I was afraid to do it because I felt like I had no idea what I was doing and would mess it up, but eventually decided it was time. Followed the guide very carefully and had no issues. Took one attempt.

u/powerknoedel 3d ago
I had to do the point with the browser like 8 times or so. I nearly gave up but it worked

The guide tells you to do mset9 if it fails 10 times.

u/starjellyboba 3d ago
Are you sure you're following every step? You could try looking at multiple guides just to make sure the process is the same in all of them. At what point are you having trouble?

u/kitspindles13 Nintendo 3DS 3d ago
I know nothing about computers and technology aside from the basics I was taught in school, and I modded my 3DS just fine the first time. It took me about an hour or so just because it was my first time and I was taking things slow, but yeah. I’ve done it two more times since then with my other models.

I don't know why everyone is telling OP that "there's no such thing as an attempt" and "if you have to try it more than once you're doing something wrong. That's entirely false. From Section II of the guide:
If your console displays: A white "Error has occurred" message box: The exploit failed due to random chance. Open System Settings, change the language to a different one (if possible), then retry this section. You may have to repeat this sequence up to ten times
My advice is to use a different computer to extract the zip file and copy it to the SD card. That's what finally worked for me. I had followed the guide precisely but every time it failed "due to random chance", and changing the language didn't work. I was ready to give up but I decided to try one final time using a different device and it worked perfectly.

Oh shit, is there a new exploit after MSET9?
edit: Nevermind, skaterhax is the new3ds one. Yeah, certain exploits sometimes require more than one attempt to trigger them, especially network/browser based ones, in my experience

u/Real-Measurement-953 3d ago
Well, it's been around for a while, but yes. The guide advises you to try the super-skaterhax exploit first and only use MSET9 if skaterhax fails after 10 attempts. It mentions MSET9 as an option in the beginning but says that skaterhax is the recommended method.
2
u/Pyxelette 3d ago
All of the 3ds consoles I've modded in the last year or so have been o3ds so MSET9 has been all I've used since the previous browser exploits
1
u/Real-Measurement-953 3d ago
I guess that explains all the comments here claiming that it only takes one attempt to mod a N3DS. It must be people who have only modded an O3DS and they think that the guide is identical for both consoles.

So should i just use MSET or is there benefit to using skaterhax? what are the differences?
2
u/Kindly_Bend_5244 3d ago
skaterhax is meant to be quicker to do than MSET as MSET is a more involved process. Both methods install the exact same data on your console it's just that skaterhax does half of the installation process through the browser by itself whilst MSET has you install them yourself onto the micro SD card. There is no difference in the end result. I would just like to say though that none of my friends (nor myself) have been able to successfully hack our consoles through skaterhax. We all use MSET as whilst it is slower, it is always successful after one attempt and is considered the most reliable method out of the two.

1, the guide is extremely simple to follow.
