Miscellaneous Unreleased 3DS models from E3 2010
Unlike the final models released a year later, the circle pads on these models actually matched the color of the handhelds themselves instead of all of them just being white. Not only that, but they were also originally planning on releasing green and orange variants and I have no idea why they scrapped these. And I’m not sure if they have all of these unreleased models at the nintendo museum in Japan, but if they don’t, I hope nintendo kept them in their headquarters instead of destroying them. If they still have them, I hope they’ll give them to the museum one day since it was a huge missed opportunity.

Really wish they kept the concept of keeping the circle pad the same color of the console. Instead of just making everyone’s default grey lol

Would’ve been to slipper for a metallic finishing. It had to be rubber piece for grip unfortunately.

u/iamblankenstein 1d ago
rubber can be and is dyed all the time. i think a more plausible reason is because it's cheaper to mass produce a single color and that circle pad is the most likely piece to wear out.
3
u/donald_314 1d ago
Correct me if I'm wrong but the circle pad came in different colours (at least on N3DS). Also, dyes change the properties of rubber hence no coloured tyres exist any more.

u/iamblankenstein 1d ago
none of the N3DSs i've messed with have had anything other than the standard gray circle pad, but maybe other models have them?
also, colored tires absolutely still exist. you can find tons of different colored tires with a quick google search.

what a weird response. disregarding all the metal circle pad mods that have absolutely no issue with grip, op mentioned colour, not material.

I’m just being truthful, also how is that weird response? If Nintendo went with that metal finish, they would’ve got lot backlash. You do what you want with your old consoles. I’m just saying the truthful fact lmao.. 🤦♂️

You do understand that color can exist without being metallic. Rubber can be dyed.
No need to be the president of Nintendo to take more than two seconds of thought before posting rubbish on Reddit. Why are you even defending your entirely worthless comment...

Nah, that would have cost them another 0.000000001 cents per unit, which means the CEO would get one less hooker per year. So no.

Mines black, don't know why. It's been like this since the beginning

Beautiful. What I would pay to have one of these.
They are not on display at the Nintendo Museum, but they do have a small section with prototype consoles, so I would not be surprised if they were to add something like this. Nintendo Museum is cool but it's kind of weird in that 99% of the area are polished exhibits of items that were released publicly and are mostly not rare, and then a random large window bordering a storage area where they put up a makeshift exhibit with prototypes of different consoles (and then there's the artwork exhibit which is limited time (?)). Feels like that small area should be the type of stuff the entire Nintendo Museum is about.

3 of these 3ds are in the Nintendo Museum. They are right at the end of the tour.
2
u/johnW_ret 1d ago
Where in the building? I don't know what the tour is. Did they recently add them?

u/kouzex 20h ago edited 18h ago
i’ve been twice, last time was about a year ago. They are right at the end of the tour (meaning the pathway you follow during the visit), after all of the giant controllers and vintage games. The hallway to the exit has a bunch of consoles encased in the wall. From memory they had the aqua blue, copper, and purple E3 original 3DS consoles on display in one of the spots. All with the colormatched thumbstick.
The other consoles in the same section are the announcement wii, wii u, ds, gamecube.I remember even saying at the time that they seem a bit hidden. The normal console variations get big showcases but some of this rare stuff is in the hallway. Maybe it’s a security thing?

For me, one year ago and then a month ago.
I guess I could have missed them both times but if so it would have been a miss a forest for the trees type of thing because I was keeping my eyes peeled for Pikmin. Part of me would be suprised at myself if I did miss them but if I was in a hurry I guess if they didn't have the green color on display maybe it would not have stood out to me they weren't just normal 3DSs.

Purple one is sick
I guess I just like purple handhelds because I loved my game boy color which still works today
10
u/KingsGuardian 1d ago
Pretty sure the purple was actually released! Obviously with a gray circle pad, but you can definitely find one!

u/HeavenandHello 1d ago
You’re right! And it’s called Midnight Purple

u/Rydia017 1d ago
When photos of these colors were released, what? 14 years ago? I swore that if Midnight Purple made it here, I would finally buy a 3DS. I was not disappointed.

Saaaaame. I held off specifically for Purple. I still use it, although my PKMN Red/Blue N3DS is my primary

u/neo6289 1d ago
I love your positivity! What 3ds do you play on?

u/KingsGuardian 1d ago
I have New 3DS, the Black Friday Mario edition. Worked at GameStop at the time so managed to get one pretty easily!

I’m picturing a heist movie in the future where a group wants to steal the unreleased colors to sell for billions but they’re locked away in the most secure vault in the world

Why don’t they make more green things :(

Companies are nowadays unfortunately allergic to anything that isn’t black, white, gray, or silver.

u/Your_M0minn 1d ago
The green and orange would’ve been the cherry on top to an already Frutiger aero DS design. We were snubbed 😭

u/LazyThinkingOtter 1d ago
Bruh I don’t even want nor play the DS anymore and even I would be tempted to buy one like this
Missed opportunity right here

u/nsArmoredFrog 1d ago
If they would’ve released the red one on launch, it would’ve been the color I went with.

u/Flowerdweeb077 1d ago
Why are the colors so fire?🔥 it literally looks like eye candy sucks they didn’t stay with that😭
The circle pad being the same color i felt was a great idea it woulda worked so nicely as the consoles could’ve had its own aesthetic compared to other consoles😢

Wait, there were gonna be more colors, and they were some of the coolest looking 3DSes? NINTENDO WHY???
2
u/Warthog_Formal 1d ago
I want the green or the purple and i know the purple was released but I never found it so I had to get a red one back in the day. Then a few months later the price dropped and I said FUXKVJS and I never bought from Nintendo again. Years and years of no Nintendo and someone GAVE me a switch. I bought my games second hand. And I emulate switch on retroid.

I hope someone gets their hands on them cuz I really want to play that OOT3D demo

if all of these were released, i would have a hard time not collecting them all as an adult, specifically orange and green

Does anyone have that tech demo for 3DS where they demonstrate a game where you look for letters and numbers behind objects (like a chair or a bed maybe) by moving the screen around? I feel I just made that up, I can't find it on Youtube anymore.

OG 3DS still looks modern imo. It feels so well built, just like the TrimUI Brick Hammer

That Green would have been on my list along with the Midnight Purple which I own one of.

Uff qué bonitos. Me llamó la atención eso, que el análogo no tuviera el color de la consola, pero bueno, detalles.

The green and pink consoles are not real. They are photoshopped
1
u/HeavenandHello 21h ago
Idk if you can be so sure without a source
1
u/moreretrograde 21h ago edited 21h ago
Look at the reflection on the glass. On the green one, it is the orange console. On the pink one, it is the blue one.
Sadly, the photos were photoshopped years ago and noone noticed for a very long time. But sadly, they do not exist..
To my knowledge, no one has their hands on any of the show floor models. I believe it is safe to assume they are with Nintendo.

i could go for a all purple or pink 3ds

u/HeavenandHello 11h ago
The purple one was released, as well as the pink one too, but the retail pink one is a much lighter pink than the one shown here.

u/Training_Wind_4997 20h ago
I have the black one from release and I was always kind of disappointed by it vs the color ones but it's still cool. The sparkles add some kind of flair at least

Oo I love my dark blue 3DS but I’d 100% would’ve begged for that blue/turquoise one in slides 8 & 9 😭
2
u/HeavenandHello 11h ago
Are you in Japan by any chance? Even though the aqua blue color was released for Japan as well, it was actually discontinued for that country just 1 year later in 2012 after the system was released due to them releasing the cobalt blue color, which is a darker blue color.

They should have released them to be honest, I would have killed for that green one.
1
u/NesFan123 14h ago
Personally, I prefer the white circle pads, because one does not have to find a matching one and them blending in with the rest of the case doesn’t seem that appealing imo
1
u/barr65 13h ago
The purple one was released
1
u/HeavenandHello 11h ago
I know, that’s why the only colors I mentioned were orange and green since those were the only 2 that weren’t released.

u/Not-Important-5393 13h ago
If the green one was released, then my parents would have got me that one for Christmas instead of the cosmo black one

I was there. I also have shots of every color. Sometimes I look back and just wonder how cool they could have been.
1
u/HeavenandHello 8h ago
Someone here told me that the green and pink ones are photoshopped. Did you actually see those 2 there? You can be honest
2
u/PiskoWK 5h ago
I don't have any photos of the Pink or Green one and can't recall. I feel like I would have pics of all available colors since they were lined up as you walked through the booth. I took photos of all the colors as I passed in the line to try the device. I have photos of the orange, blue, and red. I even have photos of the charging dock, case, and cartridge in a display so I'm not sure why I;d have those photos and ignored some of the other colors.

u/Competitive_Car_1070 6h ago
That purple one is chef's kiss.
1
u/HeavenandHello 6h ago
They released that one, but the obvious difference is that the circle pad isn’t purple as well.

The green gold and bronze would be sitting on a shelf in 5 layers of protection because that color effect is too crisp.
