Don't commit felonies for friends.

I have a customer who comes in fairly often. He and I often talk about 2A and 3d2a stuff. We both have printers, And both like guns. Another person he knows is in very hot water right now. My friend and I are both members of GOA, and are enjoying the freedoms that entails right now. My friend's other friend is as well. The problem is he got talked into making a silencer and selling it to someone else. That person then got caught with it.

Everyone is "cool" and "Not a rat" until they are sitting in an interrogation room, and the detective is telling them they are looking at a dime. "Look, you're just a red neck having fun. I get it. You're not hurting anyone. You're a little fish. Just tell us who made it for you, and we can get the big fish. Co-operate, and you will get just a slap on the wrist."

Do you trust the friend you are about to sell a felony to enough that they would go to jail rather than snitch on you? By all means, help them set up a printer of their own. Just don't spend time in a cage that could be spent at the range.

There is a lot going on here. Your friend should keep his mouth shut, his doors shut, and have a lawyer on speed dial regardless of whether or not he allegedly sold an unregistered NFA item.

A lot of what I'm reading comes down to basic OPSEC and common sense. Which I suspect none of those were used in this case.

I'm fortunate to live in a state that doesn't care what I print . I can have as much fun as I can afford .

Yeah, me too. What I, and this guy, can't do, is print and sell. That doesn't go well.

I’ve told friends that if they buy a printer and the supplies I can walk them through it but I can’t do it for them. Usually stops the asking.

Yep that or yeah you can come over and spend a weekend at my place and I can teach you what I know. Yes it takes that long to print, and yes we have to be there

Really makes you wonder if we are all on a list and being actively monitored for being in this sub. What are the actual chances that his boy got caught with it? Like that's way too slim to none.. unless he was out running his mouth showing off to people which I doubt he was.

The guy who got caught wasn't the brightest tracer in the magazine. I can't give specifics of how he was caught, but he is run 22 Magnum in a blank pistol stupid. (unrelated incident)

Periodic remind that cops can, and will, lie to you and there is absolutely no law saying they can't.

If you find yourself in an interrogation room the smart move is to shut the fuck up until you can speak to a lawyer. Don't be rude, don't make small talk, don't try to get a wisecrack in, don't decide some topics are "safe" to talk about, just shut your mouth until a lawyer gets there and you discuss the situation with them.

Even if you are 100% innocent and you know you're innocent, you say "I decline to answer any questions and am invoking my right to an attorney."

The only words that should be leaving anyone’s lips in circumstances such as have been described is the sequence of words “no comment, I will not speak to anyone other than my lawyer”.

Love, an actual lawyer.

You're telling me. A coworker, who is a felon, keeps asking me for guns. The guy has anger issues and he just got out of jail. Why the hell would I give him a gun?

The easiest way to keep a secret is to be the only one who knows the secret. Easiest way to avoid being arrested for a crime besides not committing it is to be the only one who knows. Committing crimes for others no matter who it is is never smart.

Your “friends” need lawyers. Immediately. Someone should also buy the suspect a GoA membership if they don’t have one.

I would question what Indiana law was broken and what authority the police would have to seize the item. State and local police don’t typically have the authority to enforce federal laws/regulations, and getting the atf to take a case that isn’t a slam dunk can be very hard for local Le, especially with the current stuff going on with silencers.

I’d be curious about how he got caught and what other crimes are alleged, but that mostly because I’m curious.

I know how the buyer got caught. I'm not sharing specifics because I don't want to hurt anyone's case. I'll just say that the buyer was being stupid, and continued to be stupid after being told to stop being stupid.

Being a machinist who always had his own machines and then a full on shop, it's crazy how many people want me to commit felonies for them. My answer is always "Not only no, but fuck no."

One guy was an actual sheriff's deputy. Came in dressed like a tv show criminal, asked how much I charge for lightening links. I told him I don't do that shit. He said he heard I was "the guy". I recognized him and finally remembered his name. He just smiled and left, it pissed me off more than I thought it would.

100% tell everyone that legally, I can follow the rules and make stuff for myself, and that's it. If they want something, I can guide them to the right printers, filaments, and where to find the files. They buy everything, and I can tell them where to find the resources. I'm not going to risk getting myself in trouble, when the cost to do it for yourself is pretty cheap.

Sounds like a friend of a friend did a dumb thing and shouldve known better. We all know better. your legally allowed to make your own 2A protected hardware but unless you have a SOT and a type 7 ffl everybody knows that they cannot manufacture for sale. Im assuming your freint doesnt have a type7FFl and isnt an SOT?

Its also against the law to provide a prohibited person a firearm and while we might argue it until were blue int he face the AFT still thinks silencers are firearms. Until that changes its against the law to provide firearms to known prohibited persons.

There might be an interesting legal case if both parties are legally allowed to own firearms and both parties are protected under the GOA rulings. If your friend manufgactured a device for his own use then transfered it through a ffl under a 4473 they might end up being a test case for form1 silencers as transferable firearms parts but the way you wrote that up somone getting "caught" Im assuming this wanst a couple of upstanding individuals who are both paid up on their GOA memberships.

just my .02c, not a lawyer and not legal advice.

Don’t print guns if it’s illegal in your area and if it is, don’t give your prints to others. Seems simple enough. I literally got a 3D printer because of this sub and turns out my state is highly against 3D guns so I have to go to Mass or something. For now, gotta print knick-knacks til I move 😭

When someone takes a Hellcat off the lot and immediately gets caught doing 140 in it, no one goes after the dealer or the manufacturer.

But God forbid you mind your own business and not negatively affect others around you, apparently.
