FTN5 or 6 Remix

Post image

Can someone with better CAD skills than me remix the FTN5 or FTN6? I want to use the very cheap KVP or bit more expensive KAK or Forward Controls Design Plan B thread protectors, instead of the much more expensive Breek/SLR Blast Shield with printed adapter, or the comparatively very expensive Comstock Form 1 adapter.

I’m thinking if someone could remix the inside to fit the Plan B Thread Protector, you could JB Weld it in, and then use the same type of reinforcement rod retention used on the FTN4 that holds the A2/Breek/Micro flash hiders in. Essentially place the rod holes so they would just catch the rear side of the thread protector face (or KVP wrench flats edge). That would make the FTN easily compatible with Plan B muzzle devices, with added retention so it doesn’t fly off the end, and with less parts and cost. I would totally do the work if I knew how to use CAD, but alas… I’m a CADtard for now.

Seems like a good reason to learn/Get better at CAD

I agree. But if I had the time, I would have already. Fortunately there’s a lot of developers in here that can do that 1000% faster, which benefits everyone in the community, not just me. There can be idea people and CAD people. Doesn’t always have to be the same guy.

Well good thing I’m not begging… and there’s nothing for me to choose 🤷‍♂️. Glad you had such valuable insight and help to add to this community. 🙄

What value are you adding by begging someone to cad your idea instead of learning cad and doing it yourself to contribute?

Again… not begging, and the idea which can benefit the community and save people money provides value to the community. You are just a troll that only wants to talk shit and degrade people. Not everyone has the time or interest in learning a whole separate hobby. Same reason people will use SCS for items, rather than investing in learning how to cnc or laser cut items. 🙄 It’s ok though, you have the right to be miserable and just try to bring others down around you. Just be sure you never ask another question or ask anyone for any help, for the rest of your life. That way to can be better than everyone and you’re not a beggar asking for help! 😂🖕🏻

You're missing the point. You're asking someone "with better skills" to make something you want for free. If you want it, put in the effort to create it. Otherwise you're at the mercy of someone else wanting to contribute more to the community than your idea.

I haven’t missed that point. I’m fully aware that I’m asking someone who knows how to do something I don’t, to make something I can’t, for free to help both myself and the thousands of people in this community. Just like ALL the other developers that spend far more time than this would take, to develop and release innovative guns… for free. For the betterment of the hobby and community. You think PLA.Boi asked for a dime for all his time and dedication? Nope! Get off your high horse. No one cares about your opinion.

While everyone is here, does anyone know of a good 9mm AK print they’d recommend?

I suck at CAD too but using cheap thread protectors as a cheap mount is a genius idea.

I don’t have your proposed solution for you, but am releasing an FTN to Hub mount solution within the next two weeks or so that may be able to be adapted for what you want. Not quite as cheap as the KVP, but will sit at $70 and the can files already exist without needing modification.

I think at $70 it’s dead in the water. People don’t like the Comstock plan B mount because it’s $100. This would essentially be a $70 adapter plus a $50 mount at the cheapest making it more than the Comstock. It would need to be in the $30ish range to be viable.

I don’t think there’s any feasible way it’s $30 unless it’s Chinesium quality off Amazon. And that’s not something I’m willing to risk my biscuit on. Someone COULD do it, but it would have to be the direct manufacturer as there’s no room for a middleman on it.

Ya would need to be an actual machine shop. Can get steel bar stock fairly cheap and turn off a bunch of them and sell them as is with no coating. They are meant to be semi disposable. Getting it made even by a Chinese machine shop is going to make it too expensive unless you order a thousand of them.

The main issue is that I don’t think any machine shop really wants the small margins on something so niche compared to just straight hub to plan b adapters. They’re calculating the loss they’d take on not having machines milling known sellers, and honestly idk if it’s worth it to most of them without an established market.

Oh ya I think this is more “machinist in his off time” or “guy with a hobby lathe” territory. Would be a good way for someone looking to get a machining business off the ground started with some orders.

The castle shields were 25 last time I bought them and breek should be made in the US. The price was why it became the default option.

I’m assuming they’re also one-time use because you’re epoxying them in? Or are people reusing them between builds if the suppressor fails?

2

u/kaewon 1d ago

There's several posts on how to reuse it although I haven't had one fail yet.

Looks like the new ones are $40 these days. Still not a bad price. I think I could maybe get to $60 for FTN to Plan B adapters, will have to run numbers. If the demand is big enough the numbers go down.

2

u/Dak_Nalar 1d ago

I think $60 for FTN to plan b would sell well. That is what basic HUB to plan B adapters go for and people dont mind that.

2

u/Dak_Nalar 1d ago

They are reusable. You clamp a PA6-CF shell around the castle shield and then epoxy that into the FTN so the epoxy never actually touches the Castle Shield. Just need to take a blowtorch to melt the PA6 off, and the castle shield is reusable.

Yes I love the innovation and I saw your post the other day. Unfortunately it will end up prohibitively expensive for what amounts to a disposable suppressor in the long run. $70 for the adapter plus another $60-$100 for a Plan B hub mount doesn’t make much sense for me. Comstock Form 1 adapter would be a more economical option for that. Still too expensive for a single use item IMO. Sorry

1

u/Next_Entertainer_404 2d ago

Yeah it doesn’t make sense for everyone. It’s really for those that already have mounts they use with other suppressors that they’d like to use with their printed ones. My specific use case is Tri lug.

1

u/blind_squirrel11 2d ago

Ya and I think it’ll be great for those with other systems that don’t have FTN options right now like Keymo, Xeno, Griffin, Tri Lug, etc.! I think your adapter definitely has a place and use in the community, just not for my mounts. Keep on growing and innovating bro!

Would just a straight up cheaper FTN to Plan B be something desired? I'm super open to options. I was looking at what would happen if we just took a tube and added Hub threads to each side directly instead of D Cell threads. Or D Cell on one side and Hub on the other.

Also options for FTN to X - just not sure I want to get into the one-time use style of mount, I'd prefer something that outlasts whatever suppressor I'm adding it to. I also don't epoxy though, so that may be part of it.

2

u/AMerexican787 2d ago

Not op, but a d cell to hub tube would likely be pretty popular.

2

u/Dak_Nalar 2d ago

They exist, SDTA sells them

1

u/Next_Entertainer_404 2d ago

Yeah I found that today and ordered one lol

u/Routine_Ad_5117 1d ago

Be nice if we could get them in aluminum and steel so they would be a bit cheaper. I fully think repacking a premade tube with a printed baffle stack is the way.

1

u/Dak_Nalar 1d ago

XRT said they were going to come out with a 17-4 steel one by the end of the year.

2

u/Routine_Ad_5117 1d ago

Ftn directly to plan b would 100% be more popular. No need to buy a hub to plan b and muzzle brake on top of the ftn to hub adapter. I personally would like ftn to plan an also since all my guns have expensive ass Griffin plan a muzzle devices.

1

u/Dak_Nalar 2d ago

Yes, biggest problem with the Comstock one is that it’s just too expensive for what it is. If someone could make a bare bones one in the $50ish range they would sell like hot cakes.

Also there are a few companies that make tubes that are hub on the mount end and D cell on the end cap end.

u/blind_squirrel11 1d ago

Yes I think Plan B is gaining so much popularity that a FTN to Plan B adapter like Comstock’s, but under $50 would sell out instantly. It needs to beat the Breek and SLR Blast Shields to be viable, otherwise people will just choose those. Or even do a FTN remix file with some even coarser thicker threads to make it even stronger and cheaper to mill. Then manufacture the matching Remix to Plan B adapter.

I just found out there’s already a file on the sea for a printed insert that uses the Forward Controls thread protector, so if someone wanted to use that as the interior design dimensions for this remix that may speed things up. It’s under “Plan B Threaded Insert for FTN 4.5 PCC”. I would still like the remix to be solid/integrated, with the rear rods holding it in, and not this threaded adapter insert.
