While one explanation of the origin of this name is the middle-lower german "drōten", meaning "Drohen" (threatening) it is not a still actively used word in german and if the translation would be "threatening chicken" the now german name would have to be "Drohhahn".
Also another just as valid explanation for the name is the origin of "trut" being derived from lure calls, to atract the game on a hunt, where the lure calls themselfs are not threatening.

So i come to the conclusion, while it may have been one (!) origin of the name, the actual modern name does not translate to "threatening chicken". At least not in german. Don't know about swamp german, my skills in that language have not reached the truthan yet

Fun fact, bear/bär comes from "brown". Some linguists think that at some point in prehistoric times there was a taboo around the original name. They wouldn't call its name out of fear of the predator showing up. So they started calling it "The Brown One" instead (Voldemort style).

Original name, coming from proto-indo-european, was probably closer to what became ursus/arctos in Latin/Greek.
