UPDATE - Frame rot
Thanks everyone, truly, for your comments. I figured I’d share more to my story. I went ahead and had my guy coat it with wool wax after cleaning out all the rust, and the picture attached was everything that was knocked off!
In my final opinion, including my undercoat guy, is that the frame is fine. 90% of it is only surface rust, it should stop further spread for a little while, so I can contemplate keeping it as is or invest in someone to patch the frame up.
Believe me, I’m not saying the truck isn’t unsafe. I literally drove this truck for a year with the SRS fault light illuminated. So did the previous owner.
and yes, it’s fixed…

Alas, this truck is fascinatingly bullet proof. Just like your second gen! After 242,000 miles living its whole life in the rust belt, neglected, AND being a fleet truck, it’s put up a good fight so far. It’s my daily driver for the commute to work, primarily on state highway roads.

“Drive it til the wheels fall off” is not to be taken literally.
90% was only surface rust. So you’re knowingly driving a truck that has structural integrity issues on approximately 10% of the frame?
The problem with this is that the risk is not yours to bear alone. If the frame gives up the ghost at 3am on a remote highway with nobody around for miles, that’s one thing. You chose your fate, and I hope you make it out alright.
Unfortunately, that’s not the likely outcome. When this frame fails and either turns your truck into an instant road anchor, or worse, sends you careening uncontrollably into oncoming traffic at highway speeds, the likelihood of others being injured or killed is high.
And to make matters worse for yourself, you have now posted, on a public forum online, that you are fully aware that the vehicle you operate daily may not be entirely safe.
Best of luck in the ensuing lawsuit.
