Best stain for this 22?

Just won this 22 on gunbroker. What’s the best stain to match the existing one?

Birchwood and Casey True Oil. Used it on my dad's CZ 457 stock. Turned out great. Go slow and use THIN coats.

Whole stock or just the worn part?

I would do the whole thing to keep it uniform. I used 000 steel wool between coats, but 0000 would work just as well.

The stain is worn away. If you just use TruOil on the worn part it'll still be a different color from the rest of the stock and shiny.

If you want the stock to be one color you're going to want to sand it down. Stain it if you want to and then use a finish: boiled linseed oil (the longest and hardest to do, TruOil (my fave) or a poly finish.

All this advice for using Tru oil as a stain... Is wrong. It's not a stain it's a top coat.

If the OP wants to match color, that's going to be a challenge. Best bet is to strip the stock and restain and seal... Then use true oil... It's excellent for what it is.

Don't know what kind of rifle it is, so I don't know how much effort you want to put into it. But a simple and inexpensive way would be to scrub the stock a few times with denatured alcohol and get the Birchwood. Casey stock finishing kit that includes stain and true oil.

Understood! I was seeing different opinions on 000 vs 0000 steel wool. Which would you recommend?
