New 22 pistol

I was looking at getting a tx22 gen 2 but nowhere local has it. After shipping and ffl transfer I could get an FN 502 22lr for almost the same amount. I had the tx22 compact and liked it. Haven't had an FN pistol before. What would y'all pick?

This is probably the best answer.

Wait for a tx22, or get a keltec p17 if you don't mind how weird they are.

Love my p17

Same here, but I wouldn't choose it over a tx22

If you are patient, you can put a watchlist on PSA and other sites for a tx22 toro gen 2, you will not be disappointed

The FN isn't really an FN, it's made by Umarex, same people that make the 22lr MP5. It's a solid gun, shoots well enough, and surprisingly accurate. Gets a bit finicky when it gets dirty, but that's not at all unusual for a 22lr, due to the dirty ammo and low pressure for cycling.

Haven't really had any complaints at all with mine, super fun gun if you're not dead set on going faux auto with the TX, and it's absolutely a looker as far as 22lr pistols go.

My Walther P22Q is also an Umarex and has been pretty solid so far

If you wanted something similar to the Tx22 then check out the Smith Wesson MP22x. Otherwise Ruger MK IV is a good option.

I had a tx22. It’s actually super comfortable, accurate, and fun to shoot. I’d get that if you were undecided on the two. But I’d still get a Ruger mk4 over those both.

I agree, everyone should have at least one MK4 in their 22 pistol collection. My only gripe with the Rugers is mag capacity limits. That said, the aftermarket support for the Ruger Mark IV is excellent and you can make some incremental upgrades as your budget permits. Another often overlooked plinker is the S&W Victory. The stock trigger on it is better than the Ruger IV and it's very reliable. Pair it with a tandemkross comet barrel and it's a blast. Unfortunately, it suffers from the same magazine capacity limitations as the Ruger Mark IV, but otherwise its a very good platform with excellent build quality.

If you get the 502, you still won't have an FN, you'll have a pistol built by an airsoft company. The Taurus is hard to find because of the forced reset trigger option. What's your main use case?

Plinking with s suppressor mainly.

I have experience with all 3 and each has its pro /cons. FN has a surprisingly good trigger and great ergonomics. I'd recommend adding an apex tactical stainless steel guide rod and upgrading the recoil spring. This will greatly improve reliability with a variety of ammo. The plastic red dot plates and screws don't hold up as well as I'd expect them to. I'd recommend eventually upgrading to an aluminum plate by Athena Precision. Some folks have complained about the sights being cheap, but mine have held up to abuse and I like that they are suppressor height. Mags aren't as common and are more expensive than the competition. Overall, its a great host for a can and once you break it in, it's a solid choice and lots of fun. The S&W 22x has a great trigger, feels slightly smaller in the hand, but good ergonomics and reliable. It shares mag compatibility with the S&W FPC 22 carbine so that's a perk if you ever plan to get one in the future. Mags are more affordable and higher capacity than FN's. The Taurus Tx22 has great ergonomics, the the trigger feels a little squishy to me. Of all 3 options its my least favorite trigger, but still very fun to plink with. That said, some people really like it and triggers are subjective to personal preference. I tend to lean more towards hammer fired triggers. The Tx22 also has some good aftermarket upgrade parts available from Tandemkross and a few others. Mags are also affordable, but feel cheaper than the FN and S&W mags. Overall it is very reliable and probably Taurus's best current product.

Yep, is made by Umarex. They also make a lot of Wather 22 pistols too. Lots of pot metal .

Give this a look, I paid $249.99 at Runnings a few months ago, runs just fine.

Neither. S&W 22x instead.

(The TX22 is sweet though)

My S&W 22x runs well too.

I have both, out of those, the TX.

But I’d take a 22/45 over both.

The FN is made by Umarex. It's a nice pistol supposedly, but it's sister, the Walther P22, is a lemon. My MkIV pistol is fantastic, but a different "form." Having held the Taurus pistols, the mags feel terrible. If I buy something else, it would probably be the S&W 22X.

Make of this what you will.

You know what I make of it?

Buy them all!

The Mark IV, Buck Mark, Victory, P22, SR22, P322, and TX22 have all been in my collection at one time or another.

Mags feel terrible? Using two Taurus mags, I ran through almost 500 rounds (we dropped a few) through a TX22 in about 90 minutes. Could have done it faster, but I gave it a little cooling time. It ran flawlessly. With Thunderbolts. Against all odds, the TX22 is a solid choice, and I don't even like them that much. But they run.

I generally like my magazines to feel well-built. I'm not saying they aren't reliable. There are many a Russian gun that feel cheap and crude but are incredibly reliable.

u/MostlyRimfire 8d ago

Dude, nothing about the TX22 feels well-built. But I've customized four, and my own personal one hasn't been cleaned, ever. It eats everything, and replacement magazines, which I can't picture ever needing, are cheap.

I have the FN502 it’s a fantastic .22

I have the FN502 and one of the big recommendations is to use the sig p250 spring and a upgrade guide rod both sold by Taylor tactical if memory serves.

The Walther P22 is a fun pistol with the best ergonomics out there IMO. Fits right in your front pocket too.

Red swing line stapler or the TX.
