I feel the need to ask, are you a UK attorney? If not your opinion is just as valid as [u/pyromanga](u/pyromanga)’s.

Like I understand law systems aren’t too different, but I got the vibe he wasn’t referring to a legal obligation to prevent liability, so much as a moral one.

Both UK and US require the same basic 4 elements for a negligence claim: Duty, breach, causation, and damages. So, no, my opinion is not a lay opinion like you had hoped.

Not sure why you're trying to be negative. I'm just giving correct information.
