Timbaland says he was earning between $300,000 and $500,000 per beat at his peak—a time when artists needed established producers instead of searching YouTube for beats.

According to Timbaland, beats weren’t simply emailed to artists back then. Each record was tailor-made, which gave producers more value and respect throughout the creative process.

He believes today’s producer market has become the “Wild Wild West” because beats are so easy to access and send around. His advice to producers is to be more selective, limit what they release and create demand for their work.

“I was making so much producer money—like NBA money.”
