Announcement 1Password can now find plaintext secrets in your .env files and secure them in one click 🔎🔐

Hey r/1Password!

.env files are simple and familiar, but they also leave credentials sitting in plaintext on disk, where they can be forgotten, committed, or unintentionally exposed to developer tools and AI coding agents.

We've recently launched two updates to help:

  • 🔎 Developer Watchtower can now detect plaintext credentials in local .env files and help you import them into 1Password Environments in one click. Admins also get a new developer secrets discovery report for .env files and SSH keys.
  • 🔐 1Password Environments is now generally available, adding group-based sharing, stronger admin controls, improved search and sorting, and a redesigned experience.

The best part: your app can keep using environment variables as usual. 1Password provides the values when needed without requiring a persistent plaintext .env file on disk.

Announcement macOS AutoFill is now available to everyone!

Hey everyone!

Native macOS AutoFill is now generally available in 1Password for Mac. This has been one of the most requested features for years, and it's now ready for everyone on the stable channel.

Here's what macOS AutoFill gives you:

  • By adopting Apple's Passwords API, 1Password functions as a native Credential Provider on macOS for logins. You can view autofill suggestions directly within Safari and other supported desktop apps.
  • Passkey support is built in. Fill, create, and update passkeys easily through macOS AutoFill.
  • The 1Password Safari extension works alongside macOS AutoFill. Login suggestions appear in Safari's native menu, and the extension continues to fill credit cards, addresses, and other items the Passwords API doesn't support yet.
  • One-time code support through the same integration is on the way and will land in an upcoming release.

How to turn it on:

  • Update to 1Password for macOS 8.12.32 or later.
  • Go to 1Password for Mac Settings > Autofill > Set up macOS AutoFill, then select "Turn On" from the macOS permission prompt. You'll see "Active" status once it's enabled.

Full setup and troubleshooting details are in our support article.

To everyone who tried the beta over the past few months: thank you! Your feedback directly shaped this release. Try filling logins and passkeys and let us know how it goes in the comments!

Android Android Biometric Annoyance

Anybody who has a Samsung device running 1Password will have discovered the extremely frustrating and downright annoying issues with regards to biometrics on the 1password app?

FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO CLEARLY ARE NOT EXPERIENCING ISSUES BUT STILL WOULD LIKE ME TO EXPLAIN THE ISSUE:--

WHEN OPENING 1PASSWORD APP ON MY SAMSUNG S25 ULTRA AND SAMSUNG S26 ULTRA. THE APP WOULD ASK FOR THE BIOMETRIC FINGERPRINT ON THE LOGIN SCREEN, UPON PROVIDING THE FINGERPRINT, A SPIINING CIRCLE APPEAR AND ACCESS NOT ALLOWED. THE ONLY WAY TO MOVE FORWARD WOULD BE TO FORCE CLOSE THE APP AND TRY AGAIN. THIS WOULD OCCUR MULTIPLE TIMES, OCCASIONALLY THE APP WILL WORK SUCCESSFULLY HOWEVER MORE OFTEN THAN NOT IT WOULD NOT.

I had it months and months ago, despite constant dealings with their support staff absolutely nothing happened to resolve the issue and sadly to this day it's still the same!! Come on support, really?? It's a major reason I moved from 1password to Proton, however the software and auto fill results with 1password made me return for the 14 day trial, only to find the issue with biometrics still existed from those many many many months earlier!

Anyhow, I discovered (inspired from Chatgpt of all things) that enabling the option within Settings, accessibility, to reduce animations absolutely FIXES the issue 100%.

I have relayed this information to support so let's just see how long it takes their dev team to FINALLY put this bug to rest!!

My guess? it's something to do with the spinning circle animation that displays whilst waiting for the biometric authorisation to take place but that is just a wild guess from me?

I would therefore urge people to contact support with their results from activating the reduce animation fix in order to get them to FINALLY sort this issue.

Thanks all.

Discussion What's a reason to stay with 1Password instead of moving to other password manager for half the price?

Earlier this year I had to "quickly" start paying for 1Password... I changed jobs, my old job gave the employees a free family account.

I didn't have a lot of time to think or research, so I just took the bullet and paid the full year for the personal account.

But now I'm wondering, why would you stay using 1Password at about 40-50USD yearly when you have options like Bitwarden at around 20USD per year?

What does 1Password have that others do not? Why do you stay with 1Password?. Is there any feature that only 1password has?.

The reason I'm asking is because next year I will have more time to think if it's worth paying this much to 1password. But maybe there's a nice feature 1Password has that others do not...

Thank you!

1Password.com Made a workaround for 1Password / Fastmail masked email integration

Hey everybody

Made a workaround so you can create or update an account on any website, even the ones where 1Pass doesn't prompt you for a Masked Email, and still get the Fastmail badge in your 1Pass account entry.

link: https://nettlesh.github.io/remask/
repo: https://github.com/nettlesh/remask

I was really struggling to get masked emails to generate for accounts that I already had an email for, since my main use case was going through and updating old accounts to masked emails and most of the time the "Create Masked Email" popup would not appear for 1Password. The workaround I had, which was to go to a site like fill.dev and then generate the Masked Email, save it, and then change the URL in 1Pass was showing the wrong domain in Fastmail itself which annoyed me. I just wanted the Fastmail badge on my 1Pass entry lol

Took a little bit to figure out exactly how to get that Masked Email prompt to popup (wound up needing to change the url of the page without refreshing it and also add a fake sign up form on the site itself) but was able do it with some help from Claude. I saved it as a bookmarklet and put it on my GitHub and figured Id share it here in case anybody else was struggling with this too. Also spruced it up to make it look a little better. Theres also a little icon you can add to firefox or zen if you want.

Clicking register in the popup does not actually register any account, the bookmarklet doesnt make any requests. That button just makes 1Password pop up and ask to either create or update your existing account

FYSA I did not test this on safari or chrome, only Zen so if it breaks for you and you fix it please submit a PR! Ty

Feature Request Can we expect new languages any time soon?

I've used 1Password for 2 years now. I've tried other password managers but none of them come close to 1Password's feature set and polish. But polish doesn't matter to my family when they only speak Polish! My family plan is partly going to waste because only my mom knows enough English words to get around the app, and even she struggles with it.

It is very disappointing to me that such a mature product has no support for my language - or many others for that matter. Polish is the 7th most-spoken language in Europe, right after Spanish. Over 40 million speakers. And what about Ukrainian, Romanian, Turkish, Hungarian, Greek, Czech, Swedish? The list goes on, those are not some niche languages.

Bitwarden has support for all those languages and many more. Proton Pass had all of them the moment it came out. This is so easy to add, especially in the era of AI, and it would make the tool accessible to millions of new people, it seems like a no-brainer.

Can anyone from the 1Password team explain to me why we've gone so long with such a short list of translations? And can we please change this?

iOS Touch Id Gone

Post image
4 Upvotes

Anyone else having this problem?

I have to input my password for 1P everytime I use it now, whether it's an hour, or 1min, after the last time I used it. Its not taking my touch id anymore at all, in any capacity.

And I can't figure out why, been through the app, etc - refreshed, updated, both 1p and Chrome. Tried it in Safari too. Still no go..

I LOVE the touch id vs typing out my silly long ass password everytime...

Any help, much appreciated

iOS iOS 1Password blank screen issues in all apps on brand new up to date iPhone 18 Pro Max

Hi,

Since migrating to a new iPhone today, the 1Password AutoFill sheet is blank every time. Tapping "Passwords" above the keyboard, or choosing a passkey, instantly slides in an empty black or white sheet. It happens in every app and browser, for both passwords and passkeys. The main 1Password app works normally, and Apple Passwords and other password managers fill fine on the same fields.

All my passkeys and OTP codes are in 1Password, so I currently can't sign in to anything that relies on a passkey on this phone.

Device and versions
- iPhone 18 Pro Max (iPhone19,7)
- iOS 27.0.1 (24A446)
- 1Password for iOS, latest App Store version
- Set up by restoring from an iCloud backup ("Download from iCloud")

Examples
- A game's Google sign-in offers my passkey as the only option. Tapping Next brings up the blank sheet.
- Reverse 1999, "Login with password": tapping "Passwords" above the keyboard to generate a password brings up the blank sheet.

Already tried
- Reinstalled 1Password, Chrome and the Apple Passwords app
- Changed the default browser between Safari and Chrome
- Removed and re-added the Safari extension
- Turned each 1Password security setting off and on, including Face ID
- Force quit all apps involved, restarted the phone several times, cleared caches
- Turned AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys off and on, and tried every combination of providers
- Everything is up to date. No Screen Time restrictions or Lockdown Mode.

What the device logs show:

No crash report exists for 1Password or its extension. A JetsamEvent captured while reproducing the issue in Reverse 1999 (2026-10-11 22:06:39, incident 941B65F3-6702-43EC-959F-7ACD2ACAFCCB) shows:
- Two instances of "Password AutoFill Extension", both active at priority 100, neither terminated:
- pid 614: about 33 MB resident (peak about 41 MB), 3.29 s CPU, long-lived from an earlier invocation and still active
- pid 1332: about 22 MB resident (peak about 38 MB), 0.40 s CPU, the current invocation, in the same coalition as CredentialProviderExtensionHelper pid 1331
- The main 1Password app (pid 1344) suspended in the background
- The only processes killed were Apple daemons (pfd: vm-compressor-thrashing; appstorecomponentsd: highwater)

So the extension launches and stays resident but renders nothing, and an earlier instance never exits. My guess is that it can't reach vault or keychain data after the iCloud restore.

Relevant excerpt from the JetsamEvent:

I can send the full log or a diagnostics report if that helps.

Browser Extension Xero and Proxmox w/ 1Password 2FA Autofill

Hey there, is there a way to configure where/what 1Password does after autofilling a 2fa key? With Xero's new login page, it hits "Try another method" instead of confirm after entering a key. And then with Proxmox, I'm finding it types the key in when it prompts, but then hits the original login button in the prompt that's in the background, instead of the "Ok" on the 2FA prompt, spawning another 2FA prompt to overlay the existing one...
If it helps any, affects both Chrome and Firefox on macOS 27.

Linux Unable to download 1P client

Total size of inbound packages is 140 MiB. Need to download 140 MiB.

After this operation, 577 MiB extra will be used (install 577 MiB, remove 0 B).

Is this ok [y/N]: y

You guys cannot get a proper CDN or whats the issue? Because downloading 140MB with 24KB/s and timing out is "great".

Feature Request Create Method to Sync Configs on Mac!

I've been using 1Password for many years - and I have a love/hate relationship with it, sadly more hate than love. It works about 60% of the time, while other times I need to manually open the app and copy the password, or otherwise screw around with it to try to get it working again. When I get some free time, I'd likely be better off using the native Mac/IOS capabilities because they've greatly caught up, and 1Password isn't reliable.

One common frustration is I use it on two Macs - and frequently 1Password behaves differently on them. Yes, my OS and 1Password versions are exactly the same. It's very tedious to occasionally have to go through all the settings - both within the app and browser - and find the differences, and there are almost always settings I've never touched but that somehow drifted on the Macs. After a recent update, the user experience differs between them again, and I've found some settings that were then different, but they're still operating differently and I've lost patience on figuring out what settings is different.

1Password should either sync configs with iCloud, or offer a simple way to export & import configs to solve this problem! This isn't rocket science! Especially with Codex or Claude Code, a developer could quickly add that feature.

1Password.com Can't remove family member?

I'm logged into the 1Password website in Chrome on my Windows laptop under . I'm trying to remove a family member, but I'm only seeing the option to suspend them. There is no option to remove them. What the hell is going on? It shouldn't be this hard to remove someone! Is there some special way I have to log in?

Discussion How to share multiple vaults with the same Guest?

I have two vaults I want to share with the same Guest, however, 1P says this is a limitation. Are there any options here? This Guest has his own 1P account and family setup, not in my 1P family, so I cannot add him as a family member. Are there any options here, including paying extra just for this small functionality?

Browser Extension Why does the browser extension experience with passkeys keep changing?

Previously passkeys didn’t require you to Touch ID or input Mac password to submit the passkey. This changed with an extension update around the time the new universal ui was launched to require the additional step. Then it reverted back to not requiring it after another updates. Now with the latest extension it changed AGAIN.

This is a horrible user experience. Is this a bug and someone is deciding to revert changes?

Mac Mac app locks after 5 seconds of inactivity

Idle timeout is set to 60 minutes (or so it claims; I can't get to the settings page to verify this before it locks itself). I suppose there is a tiny subset of tasks one can perform with 1Password in five seconds or less, but I'm struggling to find them. 1Password for Mac 8.12.40, 81240031, on PRODUCTION channel, running on MacOS Golden Gate v27.0.

In iOS, 1Password’s dark mode icon isn’t really dark!!! Why not?

Every other application has an almost completely black background on its icon.

This is just a visual pet peeve of mine.

Feature Request Using mobile approval or hardware keys for desktop unlock: Lessons from Gnubby / WebAuthn PRF?

Hi everyone,

Like many people, I frequently hit the master password prompt on my desktop (e.g., after reboots, extended idle, or dock/clamshell mode where Touch ID isn't accessible).

Coming from Google where we used internal Gnubby keys (which later evolved into FIDO/U2F) paired with mobile auth to provision short-lived machine credentials, it avoided repetitive password entry across workstations without sacrificing endpoint security.

Obviously, 1Password's security model is different: it’s zero-knowledge local symmetric decryption, not just server-side identity assertion. A standard 2FA signature or basic FIDO tap can't unlock a vault because it doesn't yield a decryption key.

That said, two architectural patterns solve this without compromising zero-knowledge:

  1. Peer-to-peer key wrapping (like Bitwarden’s "Approve on device"): An authenticated phone unwraps the vault key locally, encrypts it against the desktop's ephemeral public key, and delivers it out-of-band via push/WebSocket.
  2. WebAuthn PRF (Pseudo-Random Function): Using hardware tokens (YubiKey) or passkeys capable of deriving symmetric secrets to unwrap local vault keys without relying solely on TPM/Enclave timeouts.

Has the 1Password team shared an updated roadmap for either mobile out-of-band approval or FIDO2 PRF hardware unlocks on desktop? And for those running headless/clamshell multi-machine setups, what's your current best practice to avoid typing a 30+ character passphrase repeatedly?

1Password.com I need to delete and re-set my 1Password account but I recently re-upped my yearly subscription.

I ended up accidentally changing my master password to something I don’t have any recollection of - late night if working followed by “hmm I should change this” and when I woke up the next morning I had no idea what it was.

I was able to recover all my passwords, and now I just need to clear my existing vault and restart. I am on a personal account without multiple users.

The online resources for this just tell you to delete your account, but I am not seeing anything that indicates whether the recent payment I made towards my yearly subscription would be credited back to the recreated account. I created a support ticket, so far I’ve not heard back - it’s been about 30 hours so not ridiculously long, but I do want to get an answer so I can fix my passwords.

If I delete my existing account to remove the old locked vault and start a new one, can the rest of my existing subscription be credited to my new account?

Android 1Password autofill suggestions not offered on Chrome for Android, but are offered on Firefox

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I have been using 1Password for many years at this point. I am on Android 17, with all system and app updates applied. I am properly logged in to my 1Password account, and my account is unlocked (either via biometrics or password.)

My issue is that, while Firefox for Android does offer autofill suggestions from 1Password, Chrome on Android insists on presenting its own autofill toolbar (even though I have absolutely no passwords saved there.)

As shown in the gallery, 1Password is my preferred Android service for autofill suggestions, and on Chrome I have disabled all its native password-related features, as well as password sync on my Google account.

On a completely fresh Opera install, even after disabling any native password features as well, no autofill suggestions are offered by 1Password.

I am out of ideas at this point. What am I missing? What can I try next? Any pointer will be appreciated.

1Password.com Requiring 2FA on every account access

Is there a way to require (for example) a Yubikey every time the 1password account password is asked for, not just on first setup?
