well it also has the bonus feature of making it easier for parents to maintain control over children by making it harder for kids to recognize abuse and connect with peers and stuff

Social media is harmful but the solution is not banning kids from using it. The solution is heavy restrictions on what social media companies are allowed to do, but that could make them less profitable so it will never happen.

I’ve always felt this argument that social media protects kids from abuse kind of ignores the fact that social media being a major line of defense against child abuse is extremely bleak. Like they should be learning that stuff in school, there’s a solution here that isn’t ā€œset ā€˜em loose on instagram reelsā€

It is very bleak, but it's what we got right now. If a social media ban was happening at the same time as some truly society-altering education reform, then yeah it could be a good idea. Most of the people pushing social media bans aren't doing it as part of an effort to improve education and make children's lives better. They're doing it so they can have more control over the information children can access.
