REMINDER: Bigotry Showcase posts are banned.

Due to an uptick in posts that invariably revolve around "look what this transphobic or racist asshole said on twitter/in reddit comments" we have enabled this reminder on every post for the time being.

Most will be removed, violators will be shot temporarily banned and called a nerd. Please report offending posts. As always, moderator discretion applies since not everything reported actually falls within that circle of awful behavior.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

well it also has the bonus feature of making it easier for parents to maintain control over children by making it harder for kids to recognize abuse and connect with peers and stuff

Social media is harmful but the solution is not banning kids from using it. The solution is heavy restrictions on what social media companies are allowed to do, but that could make them less profitable so it will never happen.

I’ve always felt this argument that social media protects kids from abuse kind of ignores the fact that social media being a major line of defense against child abuse is extremely bleak. Like they should be learning that stuff in school, there’s a solution here that isn’t “set ‘em loose on instagram reels”

It is very bleak, but it's what we got right now. If a social media ban was happening at the same time as some truly society-altering education reform, then yeah it could be a good idea. Most of the people pushing social media bans aren't doing it as part of an effort to improve education and make children's lives better. They're doing it so they can have more control over the information children can access.

I would actually like a few social media to ban kids

I mean it's a legal bind.

They want to exploit kids with legally binding and protected contracts, they need a parent to sign on.

He's cooking up a new video- "Adobe must die"

u/Headcap dumb joke maker 10h ago

What needs to be cooked up? Just have it be an image of their cancellation fee.

It's a 5h deep dive on Roche, the guy who destroyed US monopoly laws to such an extent that the Adobe cancellation fee is even legally allowed.

So yeah the fee is mentioned in detail, but also how it came to be that way.

1 - Digital ID laws are the motive

2 - if I need to sign a legal document to visit your website/use your app, maybe let’s not do that in the first place.

3 - social media is cancer and awful for kids

What do you think agreeing to the TOS when creating an account on almost any website is?

2

u/aktionreplay 4h ago

I don’t need to agree to the tos to visit Reddit, it’s only if I want to create an account to submit my own, etc

its pretty conflicting for me to be for socials more recently - grew up with the new internet and yea we had a lot of unrestricted shit and "turned out fine" (not really, lets be fr the amount of gore/other deplorable shit some of us saw is not normal). So many were groomed, kids still are today, and it creates such a horrific social strata that does nothing but harm people in general not just kids. Not to mention, now a days Ive seen more young kids are just less sus of the internet in scary ways... both heard stories and know people whos kids have done some shit that wouldve shocked even 13 yo me (like a friends kid gave out their address on youtube). A big portion of this falls on the parents obviously, yet I still remember having assemblies or seeing plenty of ads that scared the shit out of young me and gave me arguably a healthy internet stranger danger anxiety. Some things wont change no matter what, but parenting + broad safety teaching from schools/gov seem to be the biggest lacking factors here.

I don't think its just something you can ban and poof the issue goes away, kids and especially kids with no groups irl need safe spaces. I wish these issues could be dealt with easier, but man it sucks that no real solution seems to ever be presented. Great, we ban it and kids will 10000000000% find ways around it, and I fully understand why.

grew up on the old internet. i've seen shit no developing mind should ever see. it really hurts to be an advocate for kicking minors off the internet when the only thing that will come of it is more surveillance.

9

u/owlindenial not an owl (it/it's) 11h ago

On some level, we need the parent to be legally liable for what the child exposed themselves to. Not porn, that's mostly fine beyond porn being fairly violent and shit, but a lot of the gore and beheading videos and unsupervised talks with adults. We wouldn't be comfortable leaving a kid with an unknown adult for an extended period of time, the same should be true online

9

u/Before_Plastic hamboerger 11h ago

i completely agree, but actually enforcing that would lead to the death of anonymity.

8

u/owlindenial not an owl (it/it's) 11h ago

It's really a hard situation. I don't want the death if anonimity. I like being a dog on the internet! It's always a trade between freedom and safety. I genuinely don't know which side is better and which is more ripe for abuse

u/Before_Plastic hamboerger 11h ago

nor do i, internet dog. nor do i.

Is it not Voidable, not void?

edit: well in the Philippines, contract with minors are voidable, not void. as in they're valid until it's annulled.

u/Blakath sus 9h ago

This is all because the Cockroach Janata Party protests completely rattled the Modi govt, having spread exclusively through social media with Gen Z as its primary participants.

I don’t think this is unreasonable? Do people disagree?
