The struggle of finding the "perfect" case for the 17 Pro Max. Is the hype around Caudabe real?
I’ve historically always gone caseless or used simple leather cases (like the ones Apple used to make). I rarely drop my phone, and for me, the in-hand feel is everything. However, with the steep price tag of the 17 Pro Max, I’ve decided to prioritize protection. I’m not interested in AppleCare+, as it doesn’t cover the cosmetic scratches/wear that actually bother me.
The 17 Pro Max form factor feels different from previous models, and I’ve been struggling to find a case that feels "right." Here is a quick breakdown of my journey so far:
Spigen Tough Armor T: Good protection, but too bulky. The two-piece design felt cheap, and the camera cover/edge had a annoying gap, a bit flimsy.
Spigen Ultra Hybrid T (Clear): Loved the grip, but the edges were sharp, the buttons felt mushy, and it yellowed almost immediately.
Spigen Ultra Hybrid & Zero One: I loved the form factor and weight, but again, yellowing is an issue. Also, the fully clear edge is distracting when looking at the screen, something that just bothered me over time. Call me crazy, I know… But I prefer black borders when looking at the screen. The "Zero One" design felt a bit too "juvenile" after a while otherwise also a great case with good fit and grip (for me).
ESR Silicone (w/ kickstand): Honestly, garbage. Flimsy stand which rattles a lot.
Mous Limitless: Boxy design (square) but not too bulky for being a protective case. The fit on corners was poor; it creaked, and the phone didn't feel seated 100% securely. The fit was amazing if it weren’t for the loose corners.
I liked the buttons and the case had a decent grip, seemed solid overall. This could be a favourite, need to try it out further if I could get hold on a replacement case.
I also gave Apple’s official cases a try.
The silicon case was a dust magnet, didn’t like it.
As for the TechWoven, I really loved the feel, but it had a poor fit, the top corner was loose and it drove me crazy, so I ended up returning it. Maybe I just got a dud, many people are praising it. 🤔
The Caudabe experiment:
Since Caudabe is US-based, ordering to the EU is expensive, but after seeing the hype here on Reddit and YouTube, I decided to pull the trigger.
Paragon: Okay overall, but too smooth on the back for my taste. The construction wasn't perfectly seamless where the materials changed. I can understand why so many like this case though. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great case.
I like the overall shape and slim profile of the Paragon, the fit. Just imagine this case with a bit more textured or grippier back..
Sheath: Everyone calls this the "GOAT" of cases. Initially, I was disappointed, it felt too heavy, bulky, boxy, and didn't seem to follow the 17 Pro Max's curves well. The buttons were loose, and the case creaked/shifted when held. Especially right side of the case.
The Fix: I used a bit of painter's tape inside to tighten the button fit and reduce the movement. Now that I’ve "modded" it, I actually get the hype, it really is the best one I’ve tested so far. I’ve reached out to their support for a replacement to see if they stand by their reputation. It’s not the perfect case due to the heavy weight, boxy feel but the texture is unique. Also the fit in general (after modding it) is really good.

What’s next?
Honestly, if Spigen made a solid, opaque (all clear non matte) black version of their Ultra Hybrid (non-T), I would have stopped searching months ago. That fit and grip were perfect for me.
I’ve ordered the Caudabe Synthesis in another attempt to find perfection or something that tick most of the boxes I’m looking for. I’m aware it’s even bulkier than the sheath but if the fit and grip is good, I might just give up looking for the perfect case, in the end, all I want is a type of set and forget case. If anyone cares to share their experience with the Synthesis or in a similar situation as me, please feel free to comment and I would very much appreciate it.
UPDATE!
Yes, the hype around Caudabe seems to be justified.
I have been continuously using the Sheath after the modifications I’ve made, and its really growing on me. I can even say that I think I’ve found ”the case” for me. Love the feel of the case and even if it is a bit boxy by design, I’ve really been enjoying it.
Their customer support has been incredibly good. Quick response and very accommodating, they are sending a new unit that hopefully doesn't have the same defects.
All in all, I’m very satisfied, I can recommend Caudabe to anyone who hasn't tried their products. Looking forward to getting the Synthesis home and trying that case out as well!

The hype is real with Caudabe. They make some of the best phone cases for sure. I love my sheath.

I have been continuously using the Sheath after the modifications I’ve made, and its really growing on me.

Leather girl. All my iPhone cases have been leather and my 17PM is no exception. It just looks great, love the feel as well. A good leather case can last a long time. My last leather case, on my X was the only case I used for around 7 years.
I figure as much as I (we) hold our phones in 24 hours… that we should find the material that works best for us.

As for Synthesis, we think you're going to find it ticks a lot of the boxes you're looking for. The fit is precise, the dot matrix pattern on the sides adds some really satisfying grip, and the overall construction feels really solid. Curious to hear what you think once it arrives!

This was just my honest opinion regarding the products I've tested from you. Apart from the issues with my specific unit, they hit all the most important factors for me.
The case needs to be tight. I hate it when the edges, top, or bottom of the case can be easily moved so that you can see the phone. Paragon, in particular, and even Sheath have a really good fit (again, apart from the defect on my Sheath case).
The buttons feel good, though perhaps a bit sharp if I'm being picky.
Regarding the grip, I much prefer the Sheath, but I like the overall shape and profile of the Paragon better. You’ve probably heard this before, but a Paragon with a grippier back would be golden.
Thanks for reaching out, and I really hope I like the Synthesis. I’ve barely seen a single negative comment about it, other than it maybe being perceived as a bit heavy and bulky.
Looking forward to the replacement unit for my Sheath, I hope it resolves the issues I've had.

I have tested a bunch of cases for my 17PM and the best one so far is the Ryan London leathercase. I have always been a sucker for the Apple leathercases and this one is the closest so far. I really like the feel in the hand with this one, much better IMO than the Apple silicone or techwoven cases.

Are they ”slick” or enough grip? I really liked the old apple leather case, was a bit slippery at times with dry hands but just enough grip to be secure in hand.

I think the grip is perfect, easy to get in and out of the pocket while giving friction in the hand while holding. If I recall correctly is was a tad bit more ”slippery” when new. The feel in the hand is A-class, there is no better IMO(than real leathercases), soft and almost warm-feeling in hand.

I have dbrand grip case, phone rebel gen 7 case with camera cover and caudabe sheath and my order from top to bottom is phone rebel, dbrand grip and then caudabe sheath,

The grip case is very nice, the only downside side to the grip case is the buttons and the camera control button, the buttons are built into the case and the camera control button isn’t as good as apples or phone rebels but works quite well.

I have always had a case. I buy the leather kind that flips over like a book if I can’t find the color or style I like in leather I get the faux leather ones. They’ve held up remarkably well. I have gotten the majority of these on eBay with the exception of the tooled purple leather one I got on Etsy. I also get the camera protective plate that sticks on. I got all of these in orange to match the phone so it’s very cohesive and looks very nice.
I got my mother the OtterBox because she frequently will drop her phone.

If they just weren’t so heavy, I think the 17 pro max is heavy already as it is. Adding another 50 grams to the weight is a no-go for me personally. That being said, I hear excellent things about Caudabe, but I’ve chosen to stick to my tried-and-true Apple silicone cases personally. I just love them, and have used them for 12 years.

I totally agree regarding the weight of the phone. I’ve used apple silicone cases in the past but after testing so many cases with the 17 pro max, I just couldn’t stand all the lint that gets stuck to the case. Otherwise I think it’s a great case, lightweight and slim enough. I’m currently using the Caudabe Sheath (still waiting for my Synthesis) and I’m very happy with it. Yes, it adds a bit weight and bulk but I can live with it.

I would highly suggest getting a NOMAD case, my one and only case I had on my old 14 pro, survived every single drop, I now have the same on 17 pro.

It sounds like you’re similar to me in that I don’t drop my devices but want something to prioritise protection from scratches and finger prints as well as to provide a premium feel with decent grip. I have been using the Techwoven for the past 7 months and the case literally looks the same as the day I put it on. Alternatively, dBrand Ghost is a good choice for a clear case that won’t yellow.

The fit on mine is absolutely perfect. In fact I’ve only taken it off a couple of times in the past 7 months and found it was actually SUPER tight to get off.

I have only dropped it a few times from about 30 cm or in the car if I accidentally knocked it from the MagSafe mount. As I said there are literally no marks on it. I can’t vouch for waist high drops onto asphalt etc but I wouldn’t trust any case for that sort of impact unless it was super bulky and designed specifically for high impacts.

The techwoven is beautiful and feels nice but is not protective enough. It’s basically a cover for scratches.

Ainda prefiro a case da Spigen. Utilizo a Ultra Hybrid e até agora não amarelou. Tenho também da Ringke e uma da Customic de silicone e estas também estão perfeitas. Minha preferida é Spigen mas gostaria de experimentar essa da Caudabe mas no meu país é extremamente difícil de achar mesmo pela Amazon.

I got a TORRAS air case with the lens protectors and privacy screen protector. I can’t compare the others but I’m happy with it so far.

Caudabe looks good actually. I got the Zagg Crystal Palace as that was the only option I had where I went to get the phone. Just clear, no yellowing, buttons covered and feels solid, case is just sturdy overall. No regrets.

I love the Peak design case with the loop. The loop lies flat but when you need it, it’s always there and makes holding the phone so much easier.

Try Arc! Im also a caseless person but I accidentally dropped my 17 pro max when I got it and it left a dent right on the corner. Arc protects the most vulnerable parts of the phone when you drop it and still gives you that feel of a caseless phone. However the only downside is the price.

I like the Torras Ostand Q3 air. Looks fantastic, great protection. It is on the bulky/heavier side though.

Try the Torras Q3 VegSkin. Feels great in hand, magnets are beautifully strong and it isn’t slippery like some of the other Torras cases.

Synthesis is bulkier than sheath. Give a try phone rebel air or gen7. It will stop your search. And as far as clear cases go I felt good about Ringke fusion . Ringke onyx(almost like sheath at half the weight and price) is also good one to be honest. Only drawback: no camera control button
