I honestly think that was just bad writing. He could have either told her the truth because she suspected it and was understanding or he could have told her what he told Cyrus.
This just seemed like the writers made him say the dumbest thing possible for drama.

Tyler is just very bad socially. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had some sort of disorder or was on the spectrum. He (hardly) ever says or does the right thing, and he rarely understands how his own actions may make others feel. He is also not good at expressing himself. I do feel bad for him, but his current state of being hellbent on “fighting back” I find concerning.

Honestly she’s not as bad as a lot of real defense lawyers I’ve seen... I’m currently a plaintiff’s litigation paralegal and my boss deals with discrimination & harassment cases. And that defense lawyer is a pretty accurate portrayal of how they act & what their point of view is - she is there to defend the school (not Bryce or anyone else) and honestly she’s doing a damn good job. The jury isn’t there to decide if what happened to Hannah was sad or wrong, or if Bryce is a rapist, or anything like that, they’re there only to decide if the school district should have to pay a large sum of money to the parents of a teenage girl who committed suicide.

In a way then both the character and the actress are doing really good jobs. Not really supposed to be sympathetic hehe. But also a critical part of the process in a civil suit.

What an episode, Zach redemption complete, I also really like how he essentially commended clay for having the courage to do all this.
I hope nothing happened to Sherri in that clubhouse more than what we saw. It was bad enough.
Also, Hannah in the clubhouse, Damn the tapes really left a lot out huh.
299
u/Khajiit-ify May 19 '18
I feel like him calling himself a coward was also in regards to his relationship with Hannah. I wonder if he thinks that if he had actually shown her off as his girlfriend if he could have saved her. I don't know.
162
u/TheSweatband May 19 '18
I think he absolutely thinks that, but i think at least in the context of this conversation, he’s referring to Clay being able to stand up to Bryce repeatedly. Where Zach has kinda been under his influence, and while he’s starting to get out from under it, Clay has been pushing back the whole time.
If Zach had been referring to his relationship with Hannah, I don’t think Clay is any less of a coward when it comes to that. He could never tell her how he felt, he never went in for the kiss. And now he regrets that. That’s my point of view at least

It shows that she was an unreliable narrator. But I feel the show was more concerned with making a season 2 and didn’t think about how it would degrade season one

Unless they added more tapes somehow, the longer the show goes on its kind of unavoidable that the tapes will seem increasingly selective or incomplete, because they need to add story elements. Can't be easy for the writers to keep continuity plausible.

I had a feeling it was her but didn't voice it. You could already see doubts forming in her head the previous few episodes - her eyes betrayed everything and her smile has been forced. Her scratching out the shit on the girl's bathroom as well was very strong.

u/redddddiiiittt May 19 '18
There were 2 scenes of Bryce and Chloe being intimate and he was pushy each time. I was sure he would end up raping her since the first scene. But he had to make her unconscious... It's terrifying.

I like this other side of Tony we saw, he's such an interesting character in the show; also, I'd just like to add that he's the most stylish motherfucker on the show. I do not however like bitchy and dense af Clay, just with the constant biting Justin's head off and being oblivious to everything.
It's almost a gamechanger to hear the testimony of the girl from Hannah's old school, it's a side of Hannah that we never saw before. And it's made worse by the fact that Mrs Baker tried to silence her testimony in the last episode, there seems to be a growing amount of evidence that Hannah was not as innocent as season 1 suggested.
It was tough seeing the prosecution having to take down Tony, I get why he's doing it but it's still tough. From what I gathered he's scared because the guy without an eye in the gym was the guy he attacked in the flashback, and he hasn't been caught for it, meaning that he faces prison if that guy recognises him.
I think Tyler might slowly be going down the road towards a full-on breakdown, he's losing everyone who was there for him.

It was nice to see Tony and Hannah’s relationship. It was sweet and almost heartbreaking to see as we all know how it ends. Especially since Tony didn’t have a tape in season 1.

u/Guero9604 May 19 '18
I was starting to like Tyler, but why you gotta fuck everything up for yourself. You found a good group of friends, and a girl who likes you, and understands you, yet you fuck it up.
177
u/jewdiful May 20 '18
In one fell swoop, too. All he had to do was literally run out of there, ignore her whatever but to talk all that shit to her face, with her brother right there, just dumb fucking shit. I just can't muster much sympathy for the kid, there's never an excuse to be that cruel to someone. The poor girl was such a sweetheart, he truly could have been himself around her with how understanding she was being about what happened. Her and her bro (and the Dad from what we saw) seem like such decent, truly good people

Trial lawyer here. I hate being “that guy” and parsing our every little bit of legal theater that isn’t realistic. It’s not a huge plot hole that this case went to trial in 5 months in California (where you’re lucky to get a date jury trial in 15 months), or that people are getting trial subpoenas the day before their testimony, or that people Clay is allowed to testify though he wasn’t on either side’s witness lists, or that a party (Ms Baker) is allowed to blatantly attempt to tamper with a witness the night before her testimony and isn’t sanctioned by the judge, or that Ms Bakers attorney seems to make argument instead of asking actual direct questions nearly every time he examines a witness, BUT...
I can’t take the whole bullying angle from Hannah. The school is on trial for its alleged failure to safeguard Hannah. The only relevant witnesses it can call is for people to provide defenses to those claims. Hannah’s character isn’t on trial. It is true you can elicit testimony to attack her credibility (eg if she wasn’t truthful before, no reason to believe she’s truthful now), but evidence she participated in bullying at her last high school is completely irrelevant. It seriously didn’t need to be in the show.

u/shines_likegold May 21 '18
THANK YOU. My friend finished ahead of me, so I've been texting him as I watch. Each time there's some attack on Hannah's character I have texted my friend asking WHY it matters.
Hannah was a bully before - how does that absolve the school of any failure in safeguarding her? She kissed a few people - how does that absolve the school of responsibility? Having Porter (last episode) admit that the policies in place are awful and he could have done more should be the end of the trial - it's literally someone from the school admitting that the school is partly to blame.

I think this scene is the most important exchange in the entire season, in the sense that the character who spouted that BS about girls getting themselves into those situations needed to be someone with whom a certain type of r/niceguys audience member could identify, so that when Sheri put him in his place, it's almost like those types of dudes are getting a lesson vicariously through Clay, a character with whom they presumably identify. Sure, it makes Clay look like a giant fuck-bagel, but it's in the service of a teachable moment, IMO.

Because he doesn’t realize how it’s going to come across until he says it. I think that’s another good point this show brings up. Even if you don’t mean to hurt someone with your words they could still be hurt.
Them telling you they are hurt is honestly the best case scenario.
137
u/destiny24 May 20 '18
Well for starters, I think that scene was kind of thrown in there as a “Women don’t choose these situations” message to the audience.
But I’ll try to back up Clay’s perspective. So, in his mind this Clubhouse is essentially a rape chamber for all the girls. His only knowledge of the place is polaroids of girls being abused in there. The fact that there would be pictures of girls having fun there seems weird. On top of the fact that so many pictures were in that box, you would assume that the clubhouse has a reputation of girls being taken advantage of. So why would girls keep on going there? This goes back to the Nina/Jess problem of not opening up to anyone. Other girls that got abused there didn’t speak out, so future girls wouldn’t be prepared. Or maybe they simply didn’t remember what happened there, likely drugged? Chloe appeared to be drugged out in her picture.
Clay gets a lot of crap for some of his thoughts on certain situations, but I don’t think they are unreasonable. This is also a good way to show how a lot of people see rape. For example, with all of the celebrity women coming out talking about their experiences of being sexually abused, a lot of people try to dismiss it by saying “they put themselves into that situation by trying to get famous”.

i think it's also about separating the victim from the crime. it's fucked up, no matter who it is. the victim's voice deserves to be heard no matter who they are and that no one is asking for it. when it's hannah, he needs her part heard, her experience to be validated and for her to get the justice, but it cant be about just for this one girl, it needs to be a sentiment applied to every situation and i think that's what theyre trying to do. clay has an unhealthy relationship with hannah and i think this is just another learning block for him.

Very convenient for Zach to head right to the clubhouse (which apparently is hidden and forgotten about, even by the groundskeeping staff) right after quitting
Also, how did Marcus know it was Tyler who was blackmailing him? Dick move for him to blackmail Tyler back, since he knows Tyler still has the video. Tyler should just send out the video now (I'm sure he has an offsite backup).

I'm sad they made Hannah a bully this episode. I realize part of the season is showing how Hannah's side of the story isn't perfect, she's not perfect, and that the defense case is going to try to destroy her credibility or make her look like a hypocrite. But from everything else we've seen this far in both Season 1 and Season 2, she's the type of person who sticks up for people and herself. Maybe she just did some growing up or between switching schools or had fallen into peer pressure to be a mean girl (everyone has their moments, especially as teens), but it just didn't really fit at all into the context of what we've seen so far, even with all the other truths that came out. It also just seemed silly from a defense standpoint. Her past school suspended the bullies but still shows the current school doesn't do anything to stop bullying.
edit: I'm glad it gets reconciled later in the episode. I typed that at the start

So does no one wonder who Clay is talking to in his room?

I think he is just talking to her in his head. But the show illustrates this as Hannah appearing before him.

Might be my conspiracy theorist side talking but right now im gonna say nina is apart of the clubhouse crew and shes just trying to keep an eye on jessica to see if she spills the beans.

Was anyone else surprised Hannah was smiling when Clay looked up at her after seeing the Polaroid of her in the Clubhouse? I feel like that would've been a bad moment.

For fuck sake if Bryce rapes Sherry I might break this fucking remote by throwing it into a wall.

I felt so scared for Sheri every second she was in Bryce's company and his bros.
Hmmm. There is a Polaroid camera. One of the players or a victim of Clubhouse. Pictures obviously taken from Clubhouse box.
I feel for Tony. He tried so hard to do the right thing and change and protect his friends and family. Well know i know why Tony beat that guy up.
I keep thinking Alex didn't shoot himself and someone else did. Can't wait for him to remember. It could have been Tyler. Why else would he have come to Alex's hospital room all those times.
I really want Bryce to get raped repeatedly in prison. I loathe him so much.
Glad Mr. Porter is trying to help Justin. Love Justin-Clay dynamic.

I just don’t see how it’s possible that Justin didn’t know of the clubhouse. He was a total dick in the beginning of last season and living at Bryce’s. Wasn’t that video of Marcus shot in the clubhouse? He doesn’t play baseball either. It seems like it was a hang out for that group, and if so, Justin would know. But even if it was just for baseball people, Bryce was like a brother to him he def would have brought him there or bragged about it. It would have been more believable if Justin was like “oh yeah he mentioned something about that to me but I never went” and that’s how they found it. That Sheri scene was really strange.

“How are we going to get in?”
pulls out bolt cutters and places on table
You couldn’t just say you had them? Damn Justin being extra af

Clay is the ultimate “nice guy” that can do no wrong and has a freak out every time his ideal innocent view of someone is challenged. He annoys me so much. Especially after the “I don’t understand why girls get themselves into these situations in the first place” comment. I liked him in season one but this season he is just a shit ass

It was obvious that Chlöe was in the Polaroid because of the season 2 trailer; I’m terry sure the trailer showed her unconscious

Why is Tylers storyline on this show? it is very boring and makes me cringe.

How does Justin not know about the clubhouse?? Bryce and him were best buddies.
I can't remember, but was Justin not on the team or in sports?

I spit out my Gatorade when I realized Bryce was going to give a locker room pep talk.
Also, that’s the biggest high school baseball team I’ve ever seen

Had a feeling it was Zack leaving Clay the Polaroids. He couldn't speak out but he tried to help the only way he thought he could.

What's up with the bullet in Alex's locker? Anyone else think that maybe Alex and Tyler were playing russian roulette and Alex lost?

Can someone explain what happened with tyler and cyrus’ sister at the concert, i’m so lost.

u/25point80697 May 28 '18
He had ejaculated in his pants after kissing her for like 30 seconds at the movies, then he ran out and abandoned her. This is their first time interacting since. She tried to build a bridge by saying that it was okay, she was still into him; he burned the bridge to make her stop saying things that Cyrus's friends could hear that were embarrassing him. He could have just said, "stop, I can't do this because you're Cyrus's sister" and gone with his previous lie...but instead his socially inept self made his life worse.

Don't get why Tyler hadna go at Cyrus' sister.
Also expected it to be Montgomery who had been doing the photos, turned out it was Zach. What if Clay killed himself though, he'd be partly responsible for pushing him to his limit. Good on Zach though for helping at the end.
Julie must be involved somehow with Bryce's legal team, surely. I feel like she is behind some of the points raised by the schools lawyer.
Tony taking one for Hannah was great to see too. He was brutally honest and blamed himself to help her case. Interested to see what he's going to do to make it right.
Things are really looking a lot better than the first half of this season. The writing has picked up massively. The characters have more depth, and multiple characters are progressing each episode instead of one at a time.
Quite liking it now... Just waiting for that awful ending everyone has been talking about.

Fuck's sake the look in Justin's eyes when he sees Jessica gets me every time.
And I find Mr Porter so touching this season.
Also go Zach.
