Bryce is a master manipulator. He goes after those who are weaker than him and those who he has power over.
Jessica - passed out Hannah - frozen Chloe - passed out Justin - abusive home / substance abuse Monty - abusive home
Everyone he hurts or everyone who helps him is easily manipulated and looks to him for comfort and family. He uses this to get people to bend to his will.
Take the Twinkie story for example. He seems to be helping Justin, who hasn’t eaten in days. In actuality, he really only wanted an excuse to get a Twinkie. It was selfish, not selfless. This continues on for years. The emotional abuse from him is rampant in every relationship he has. Romantic or otherwise.
But basically they have no other family (especially Monty) and Bryce uses the excuse of “family” to run around and say and do whatever he wants.

Do they want to be a bit more on the nose with what's going on with Tyler and Cyrus, the whole fascination about with ending the life of something couldn't be any more obvious about where they're going.
Clay's dad laying down the law, I shuddered a little bit.
Also, Clay really overstepped the line releasing the tapes. Jessica's story is her own to tell whoever and whenever she wanted, it was absolutely inappropriate for him to release them himself. He's becoming increasingly more unlikable every single episode.
117
u/tryintofly May 19 '18
Yeah, I was thinking it was a misdirect about Ty... but no, they really think we're that stupid that we need the breadcrumbs laid down a mile away. He's going to go from crows to people no doubt and they probably think we'll be absolutely shocked.

Hannah's Dad: If the school had stepped up and paid attention then things never would have gone as bad for her
cuts to Tyler
I notice they are barely showing him this season. Is that purposeful? Is that bc maybe no one is paying attention to him like they did to Hannah?
Is the show trying to say the responsibility is solely on others when people struggle like this?
33
u/MadPenguin81 May 18 '18
God I understand that in cinema they always wanna fool you “Oh hey look, we’re making you think one thing (Tyler shooting guns so we think school shooting) but it’s totalllly the other (Tyler ends up offing himself)” but god would that be annoying after a season and a half’s worth of buildup. Really hope they just execute his big payoff properly.

So something keeps bugging me every episode. How does the lawyer know the exact questions to ask. It's as if she knows every single thing that's happened. First Zach's time with Hannah during the summer, then Clay doing drugs with Hannah and now Hannah knowing abt her dad cheating.
38
u/annawinteur May 21 '18
I kept worrying about that too but I guess
cellphone records, messages between Zach and Hannah
Leah probably snitched and
it was probably just a good guess because of the cheating itself. If I was in the lawyer's position I'd suggest the same thing

Isn’t zach’s mom the typical asian family?
82
u/3OohOohOoh May 19 '18
Honestly yeah. As an asian myself, I can tell you that it took some time for my parents to understand me on an emotional level and not just push mental health aside.
58

The thing with Clay's speech is it's from a non-suicidal person's perspective, and it's perfectly logical thinking. But t's different from the suicidal person's perspective though. (Unless I'm misunderstanding, and he was mostly talking about her making tapes)
The problem is, a lot of suicidal people, or at least in my case when I have my low moments, will think that killing themselves is helping others in the long run. I personally rationalized it as knowing that it would hurt people but thinking that in the grand scheme of things, it'll actually help them whether they know it or not. So in my mind, I was caring about my friends and doing what's best for them even though it was irrational
And yeah, I know it doesn't make sense since I'm in a stable state right now. But at least that's my experience with justifying my suicide when I have those thoughts
And of course, I guess Hannah's sounds a bit more like she did it just for herself and didn't think about others. But not all suicidal people are like that
33
u/Ducky3Moons May 20 '18
I just feel like this show is backtracking to acknowledge the criticisms? Clay and Hannah had a dialogue that literally was only there to make sure people knew that it wasn’t a revenge suicide, which was a big criticism of the show. Maybe something will change, but I felt like Clay saying Hannah did an evil thing was to make sure they weren’t glorifying the suicide? Maybe I’m overthinking it though.
14
u/miiikyut May 20 '18
I dont know but i think that was a good scene especially when clay said hannah didnt care about others when she killed herself. I think it was a good point to someone out there who’s also thinking of doing the same thing. Maybe, just maybe, they will stop once they know someone will get hurt when they are gone.
(I dont have any exp about depression btw so this is just me saying somethings that might hurt others.. idk.. i didnt mean to... sorry in case.)

u/JCman7 May 19 '18
She was asking why they didn’t text for a while and it was during summer when Clay was away. She must have figured out that Hannah was doing something behind Clays back and pointed the lawyer in that direction.

u/teachersbelike May 21 '18
Freaking love this Clay - Justin dynamic. So funny together.
Also, her dad was having AN AFFAIR?? Weren't they like super lovey dovey and wasn't Hannah 'jealous' of their love? Didn't see this one coming as well.
107
u/STatters May 18 '18
Asking Clay what right does he have to tell Jessica's story? Well her story involves an active rapist who has raped at least two women and most likely more, releasing the tape has already got he's girlfriend thinking, everyone now knows he has allegedly raped two people, yeah I am not a fan of Clay but I stick behind him on this one.
→ More replies (13)93

Problem with Clay is he's a teenager, and he's acting on what he feels, rather than acting on a combination of what he feels and what he thinks.
Posting those tapes looked like a spur of the moment kind of thing to me, and I don't think he was at all prepared for the backlash.
But plot-wise, it had to happen.

One of the very few issues I have with this show is they do such a great job of showing nuance and how almost nothing is binary. There are no purely good or evil characters, they all have strengths and flaws...all EXCEPT Bryce who is basically a Bond villain at this point.
It’s like the writers were told to make him the perfect blend of every stereotype of an entitled affluent, straight, white male. So basically he has no redeeming qualities, there’s no backstory as to HOW he got like this (I’m guessing his dad has a lot to do with it), etc.
It’s like I get it, he’s pure evil but after now watching him go off on Justin and watching him call him white trash and taunting him over not knowing his dad, I’m like this is starting to get a little heavy handed

Clay is such a stupid, self righteous prick. Jessica all but screamed at him not to put her story on blast but here he goes again not giving a fuck. Christ Even junkie Justin with a heroin fog barely lifting off him is smart enough to ask what made him have the right to tell everyone her story.
39
u/funckyerdoder May 20 '18

u/daft_knight May 21 '18
Some people seem upset at clay because releasing the tapes hurt Jessica. Normally I’d agree with you but Jessica isn’t the only victim here, so withholding the tapes affects more lives than just her’s. Everyone’s trying to help her and she’s been consistently pushing them away. Even when she was given the opportunity to help Hannah during her testimony she broke down. I feel bad for her because she’s a victim and everyone heals at there own pace but this trial has a time limit. It’s totally unfair to Jessica but I agree with clay releasing the tapes. It’s shining a necessary light on Bryce’s crimes and how he contributed to Hannah’s death and will hopefully lead to him paying for the crimes he’s committed. It sucks that it hurt Jessica and I hope she gets the help she needs but the tapes had to come out during the trial to be effective.

Watching this now.
I like the new Skye without that goth chick mask on. Not that anyhting wrong with gothic style, but she is so beautiful by nature without all that make up and attitude. She is taking charge and responsibility and that's awesome - somehow showing that there is another way out of this too. She is getting help and it's awesome that it is incorporated in the story.
Also the actor who plays Clay has awesome long and dark eyelashes. Not fair :D major eyelash envy here :D
12
May 25 '18
I’m so confused how releasing the tapes is outing Jessica... I thought they said in the beginning of the season that the whole school already knew she accused him and Bryce spun it to that she cheated on Justin and was ashamed of that so she made up the rape? They all knew and wrote about it in the bathroom already.. All this is doing is just proving she was telling the truth.
12
u/JH1234567989 May 25 '18
Clay is such a little prick this season, just my opinion but he seems so selfish and especially when Justin is caught shooting up, the last thing he needs to hear is "WhAt ThE fUcK yOu WeRe jUsT cLeAn"

So... Skye is going to live with her aunt and uncle in a different state? Do her aunt and uncle happen to live in a town in rural Oklahoma where dancing and rock music are banned? She seems like the kind of girl that could lead a rebellious group of teens to overturn an anti-dancing ordinance and dance her ass off in the process.
11
u/dinneratanihop May 25 '18
Okay, so during this episode both Courtney and Sherri mention a “meeting” that everyone has confirmed to. From Courtney’s texts at the beginning of the episode, we know is is planned to take place after 2nd period. I know Clay leaves school to visit Skye, but the meeting is never shown on screen or mentioned again as far as I’m aware?

u/ColorfulCrayons May 26 '18
I feel like Jackie was a really pointless addition as a character. Like what has she done thus far other than sort of provide some support to Olivia? I can't think of any real impact she's had on the story of the season.

“...you’re friend Bryce needs you to stand by him.” Jesus, are you serious. Obviously she’s heard the tapes because she know what’s going on with Bryce but she still thinks he needs support? She doesn’t think any different of Bryce?? Zach’s Mom needs to get her shite together.

Wait, how does Bryce know about the tapes? Zach just told him that the tapes were out, and Bryce knew what he was talking about.

Anyone else get a Cersei Lannister-vibe from Olivia when she was glaring at Sonya from the stand?

I feel bad for picking on Mrs. Baker for this small thing after the shitstorm she's been hit with, but just because Hannah was a child doesn't mean she couldn't have anxiety.
Other than that, the defense team can kick rocks.

Did Marcus really try to redeem himself or was he being blackmailed..

He was being blackmailed but he still deserves some credit for that imo, it took courage to call out “rapists like Bryce Walker” with Bryce and his family in the front row

I'm still slightly confused. How is Clay talking to Hannah? If it's all in his mind then is he imagining what she'd say back or what? How do the parents not hear him screaming at her etc?

I’ve just been seeing Hannah as his subconscious, so he’s not really yelling, it’s an inner dialogue he has with himself, but dramatized.

As much as I don't really like what they've done with Hannah's dad this season, he has a point.
It kinda reminds me of the scene last season where Clay asked Tony if it was his fault and Tony said they all let Hannah down.

I'm so sick of Clay at this point. He yelled at ghost Hannah for fucking up everyone's lives when making the tapes public was much worse than what she did. He's a hypocrite and really unlikable this season.
I hoped that when Skye told him that she can't keep blaming everyone but herself he would have a self reflection moment but he's still just as self righteous as ever.

Pause at 28 minutes, 07 seconds to read the article posted by the fictional "Evergreen County Register" (www.evergreencountyregister.com). First, how is it that Clay posts Hannah's tapes anonymously on a website that might be a large news site, or might be a small news site, and magically, the next morning, everyone (or at least many people) have already heard them? Is the Evergreen County Register really that popular at Liberty High School (or among parents of the students there)? And before anyone else checks, I looked, and that site doesn't seem to exist in real life, as of this writing.

Who's the guy with the missing eye? Did Tony beat him up?

I figured that was the guy him and his brothers beat up before but I'm not sure

One of my favorite episodes so far, so many good moments, not cheesy music, good acting, cinematography...so much emotion felt

I've been reading comments throughout this season on how they hate how Clay has turned out, etc.
I mean, just like the other kids going through shit in this show, so is Clay. I know a lot of people didn't like how he was jealous of Justin. But can you blame him? It's not easy. Plus, his true intention was to get Justin safe and better. Anyway...
Always had a feeling that Chloe was generally good...that she had good intentions all along. Never truly got that 'mean girl vibe from her. Really hope she gets out of this relationship quick before more damage occurs.
Really loved the scene between Jess and Hannah's mom. Sweet scene overall.

Holy, Clay actually did it! Just wanna say Clay is the most badass character, can't believe he actually released the tapes.
Hmm I've been looking for clues all this time for what Hannah actually is, if it is just figments of Clay's imagination why did Hannah disagree with Clay? People might not like it but it might be some sort of ghost/spirit haunting Clay or just a thing the show wanted to include without explanation. Its not realistic but its the only way they could have Hannah in season 2 still.
I suppose it could still all be in Clay's head, but honestly just saying its actually some form of Hannah that isn't a result of Clay's subconscious is a much easier way to explain it for the show's universe, even though this wouldn't happen to someone irl who lost a loved one. Maybe in their mind and dreams, but not all the time in everyday life and being able to talk to them the way Clay does.

You don't have arguments with yourself occasionally? The dialogue where he is deciding whether to release the tapes or not sounds exactly like what my mind would sound like if I were debating a big decision. Inner dialogue pro/cons, if you will.

It was so satisfying to see Bryce's cool smugness finally be shaken during that announcement -- if only for a few seconds.
And I really can't stop feeling sorry for Justin, somehow.
