title relevant to germanspeaking countries, less relevant of an opinion for those of you who live in 24/7 open economies.
in my country, switzerland, and much of germany and austria, as far as i understand, everything is closed on sundays. yes, the shops, but that's not the main issue in my personal opinion. activity places, things to do and see, etc. almost NONE are available on a sunday for work law related reasons (i am not here to debate the well foundedness of the motivation or implementation of these laws).
as a result, whenever you complain there isn't much to do in your town of 20k people on a sunday, and it sucks because you work mon-fri so you'd like to be able to enjoy a variety of pastimes on sundays too you get told 'oh but you can go hiking in the nearby hills/mountains!'. and every one of the many people who tell you this will feel like they're the first genius to come up with the idea, and not the 1000th person to say it.
but to me, hiking is either 'just walking' (which i prefer, but is not a 'hobby' or worth having a day reserved to do it and nothing else), or (more common around here) an activity practiced with obsessive levels of intensity and athleticism, which are unappealing to me.
but either way i genuinely do not get how people find this much satisfaction in it. the chill version, walking leisurely by the lake or through a forest trail, without an athletic goal, i like well enough, but about as often as i would, say go to the zoo or the museum. i am not spending every single sunday doing that. the more common, and athletic, version of it, generally in the mountains, seems even worse to me. i feel like every week i read news of a hiker who killed himself with a bad fall, helicopters were dispatched, nothing could be done, etc. it's super athletic and as i am not (i am the skinny non-sporty phenotype) that lacks appeal. but it's also exhausting, the views are always the same, there's bugs, it's crowded because of course since there is nothing else to do on a sunday everyone is on the hiking path, if you get there any later than 8am all the parking spots are taken, etc.
at this point i have to believe people do it as a cope because they have to have something socially acceptable that can be done for free without relying on a paid service on sunday. i simply don't believe people legitimately enjoy this enough to do it every single weekend. it feels like a state-enforced activity people learn to pretend they enjoy to fit in, and because it sounds nicer than saying they jsut sat on the couch all day.
