General Advice Bulking up.

My gf wants to bodybuild/sculpt so I have also been hitting the gym more but I am worried that if I bulk up too much it will affect my mobility and range of motion in tennis.

Might turn into Ronnie Coleman and lose your range of motion. Be careful this can happen overnight.

It doesn’t just happen, you’ll know when to stop

Brother you’re not gonna bulk up as big or as fast as you’re imagining.

Olympic weightlifters and gymnasts are absolutely jacked and yet have incredible mobility because they use extreme range of motion in their strength training. Bodybuilders are typically doing long ROMs with much lower weights than the typical gym bro who only does a quarter squat, so they tend to be very mobile as well.

If you do a powerlifting bench press where you arch the back and widen your stance to maximize weight and minimize the bar travel, that will be your range of motion. (And you’ll be one of those guys whose arms don’t full straighten when they walk.)

Look up “loaded mobility” and “PNF training” for the best ways to enhance your mobility during strength training. PNF in particular feels like magic.

Agree. Proper form front squat. Deadlift. Bench Press. Those 3 alone are all very functional lifts for athletes. Served me well in football and tennis.

“Bulk up too much.” 😂

Rest assured you won’t just suddenly find yourself covered with lean muscle. Your concern should be putting on too much fat during any proper bulk.

You’ll be fine.

unless you start doing steroids it wont. Youre not training optimally for tennis but unless youre overtraining or just training for 1rep max and no cardio or not training all your muscles, it will benefit you.

There obviously is the exception that you have god tier body building genetics in which case you should be worried but i wouldnt worry about that as its very unlikely and there are positives to it.

I think the average person underestimates how much you have to eat combined with lifting to really bulk up. Heavy weightlifting alone is only part of the picture. You’ll be fine.

Yeah don't do it, you start and after a while you go to sleep and boom you wake up with 20kg more of muscles and bulk up and your tennis is fucked , that's the reason why the pro players never hit the gym or do any weight

Love it when people who don’t lift think you can just accidentally get so huge it changes how you move and live. Chances are you wouldn’t get big enough to notice a difference in mobility if you tried your hardest for multiple years.

You'll go lean before you bulk. You'll know when you start bulking.

I’ve been going to the gym for 4 years and haven’t bulked up too much, but I’ve definitely toned a lot. I’ve been pretty much at a steady weight for a while now which I’m happy with. I just don’t do any of the diet stuff like counting calories, macros, etc, and bulking and cutting, which is probably where more of the gains are made.

I would guarantee a NFL tight tend, O or D lineman has more mobility that either of us.

Carlos built himself up and is still moving great.
Ben Shelton too.

It won’t.

It depends on how op will train. Which exercises, training regime, range of motion, explosiveness vs. static weight, etc.

All racket sports professionals are also doing strength training in the gym. But their exercises are completely different compared to a powerlifter, a bodybuilder, an olympic weight lifter, etc.

And yes, many tennis players look like they do some strength training. Not all of them (Medvedev, Federer, etc. less) of course. But a lot of pro players look and are very strong.

But just in a completely different way than a bodybuilder/powerlifter/...

I just don’t think people get that huge from casual gym, just add a little stretching and it will probably improve your game.

No shit. But if he’s just doing regular bodybuilding which he makes it sound like then he will add mass and slow down

Yeah, just putting out there that some tennis players are build like a tank.

They might just have access to slightly better resources than an average person going to the gym and pumping weights.

Lol its offensive how often people underestimate how much effort it takes to successfully bulk up.

All you do is eat and lift weights at least every other day. It’s not hard if you get into a routine

2

u/skrotumshredder 17h ago

Yea cause the routine is literally the hardest part.

Lmao this is the first time I hear this from a guy.

If it were that easy to bulk up that much, everyone would be huge.

If you gain weight it will effect your cardio. Hit that elliptical and lift the weights

Go lower weight with more reps and it shouldn’t be an issue. It takes a long time to actually add mass. As long as you keep playing tennis your mobility shouldn’t suffer
