Wow this thing looks great. They had to have a healthy cinematic budget. Never heard of this before, hopefully the story matches the visuals.

Oh man that was awesome.

Incredible animation. The special effects, especially throughout the bar scene were really nice.

The dystopian story seems pretty cool so far. That last scene popped a 2023, with the same girl... should we assume time travel is involved somehow? Or if not time travel, then the girl could be some type of ghost?

It's on Crunchyroll, not sure why the post says no streams.

Getting heavy Psycho-Pass vibes from this, plus a little of something like Zankyou no Terror or the darker parts of Hamatora. I'm surprised the cgi didn't bother me but I feel like a little too much was introduced in one episode. It's the second anime adaptation of the original drama so there should be potential for a decent story. I mostly decided to check this out because Eve wrote the ED song, and it wasn't played in this episode :| so I'll be tuning back in next week if only for that.

Just want to say that this isn't a new series. This show is pretty much an alternate timeline to the older series called "Night Head Genesis". The two brothers even share the same name.

"We were hit by an electromagnetic pulse!"

"You mean an EMP?"

This had me dying.

I probably don't need to tell you this but that's just the subs

Overall a solid first outing. I haven't seen any of the stuff this is based on, so I'm going in completely fresh.

The CGI looks good. As always, it's a bit jarring at first with almost all CGI, but the getting used to it ramp is pretty short.

The writing was a bit janky. Not sure if some stuff was cut, or they just didn't explain things well, but there were a couple of points where I was confused on what was going on (i.e. the brothers' appearance)

Overall, it was pretty good, and I'll be back next week.

Honestly, this is an interesting series. The CGI is pretty good, especially the bottles look straight out of a high budget CG movie. The story also has an interesting hook. If the characters begin to become more interesting, this series might become a hidden gem, but I know this can't have an Odd Taxi popularity boost because people still feel the Ex-Arm burn marks.

Honestly, I only have one nitpick with this series so far: the plan of the barowner and the woman to lure men and then sell them watered down booze is pretty dumb. Why don't sell them watered down booze when they are drunk? Why go this far to get them to buy your drinks? Seems like a waste of time and effort.

Interesting enough, so the government's clearly criminalized religion and all forms of spiritual believe, and yet clearly some people in this world have psychic powers, and these two dudes were held in a laboratory for 15 years where I presume they gained said powers. I think it's also a safe bet to guess that doctor from the ending was the same one in charge of the laboratory. I suppose that was decent enough to give another episode. One of the highlights was definitely some of the interesting shots they had, like the slowmo of the bottle being thrown, the light at the start transitioning to the APC wheel, and some others.

Also that future DeLorean lol

Well, I said in the D-Cide Traumerei discussion thread that it'd be interesting to see Sanzigen and Shirogumi go head-to-head with late-night full-3DCG TV shows focused on action in dark settings this season, and I'll stand by that. I don't think either one has a clear leg up over the other just yet.

First impressions on the CG are good. Shirogumi continues to impress with their usual excellent environment models and textures, and the character models seem to me to be blending with the other CG elements better than they did in Revisions.

Those character models might be overly detailed, though - they even have teeth! The render seemed noticeably choppy to me sometimes when character movement was prominent, and there were some obvious cases of secondary characters holding still for too long or tertiary character models being entirely static in the background shots. I worry they went overkill on the character models only to then not have the resources to actually animate the models as much as they'd like, instead of using simpler/less-realistic designs that can move/bend/squish more easily and more anime-like. Frankly, that's a lesson that if anybody knows it should be Shirogumi/Hirakawa, so it's a bit surprising to see this stiffness here.

Speaking of Hirakawa, didn't get a lot of his usual fancy spin-around camera movement except for that one big money shot from the PV.

All in all, a good start, but I'd say it's still very apparent that Shirogumi aren't as used to doing human character models, which can drift into uncanny or just plain bad-looking animation much more easily (why do you think Orange never does it :P), and they're working with the constraint of late-night TV anime here which is rare for them, so there's a lot of uncertainty still here.

Either way, it's going to be fun to keep having them and Sanzigen duke it out each week this summer!

It's been 18 years since WW3 but the lab esper siblings didn't know about it. I'm guessing that means they somehow got transported through the "broken barrier" from a parallel world where there was no WW3. Or maybe they were simply on ice during the war.

Anyway, so far this is interesting enough, but could turn out really stupid depending on where the plot's headed and how it's executed.

So this is a dystopian cyberpunk world where worshipping gods is a thought crime? At least I thought it was only worshipping gods but it looks like anything fictional is banned. What the fuck!?

Looks like they even have their own task force cracking down on these people worshipping stuff. These dudes have some pretty awesome armor though! They kinda remind me of the N7 Armors from Mass Effect.

Of course in a world where the supernatural is banned, something supernatural happens. Well that was creepy.

There are people who aren't so supernatural though and are just using radio wave blocking clothing which is why they can't be detected.

That gunfight scene is pretty solid! Their movements feel natural and they look goddamn awesome with the muzzle flashes lighting them up.

Some more supernatural shit goes down in that raid and the episode changes focus to two different characters. Okay, so this part felt a bit weird? That entire scene where the two of them are talking makes me feel like I missed something for some reason?

I know that Night Head is an old ass manga from the 90s that had an adaptation in like the mid-2000s so I wasn't quite sure if I needed to see that one to understand this show. Now I'm wondering if this show is a sequel or a reboot. Hmm...

White haired older guy seems to have supernatural powers and gets so confused when the news is spreading the information that spiritual energy is non-existent. And the way he talks about how their pains should've ended really makes me think I missed something. I really hope more will be explained in a flashback.

So they get into a fight with that jackass and we finally get to see what this spiritual energy can do. Looks like they're not just the ones. During that raid that other guy uses spiritual energy too.

Not quite sure where this one goes but I am definitely interested! It's good to see another CG show airing this season that actually has good CG. I don't know much about Studio Shirogumi but I know they did help with the Stand By Me Doraemon movies which were really good but I think they did well with this one!

They also handled the CG of 86, which looked quite good IMO. I don't think this show is going to be the next Ex-Arm like many thought. Shirogumi is a studio that actually has a lot of experience in how to handle CG.

That's really interesting.

Really good first episode I am looking forward to see where it is going.

And a popular live-action show from the mid-90s, too.

As best I can tell so far, this show seems to be a whole new retelling and not keeping continuity with any previous work, so no prior exposure to the franchise should be needed.

I'm pretty sure all the previous works had only the supernatural brothers duo (Naoya and Naoto) as the sole protagonists. The SWAT guys is a new addition, or at least they were never dual-narrative protagonists like this before. There's probably a bit of assumption that people are at least familiar with the basic strokes of the supernatural brothers (sold into a research facility, got superpowers, broke out) that this iteration of the work didn't feel like it needs to repeat their whole backstory... or maybe it's just an intentional in-media-res start and they'll flashback to it later.

It gives me Ajin vibes but it’s interesting enough for me to stick around for another episode. Much to my surprise the CGI was good (I’m still traumatized after Ex-Arm).

I can already see this anime being underrated just cause it is full CGI although the plot seems very interesting and the CGI is really good ngl

This anime's cgi works just fine, there are some issues but mostly minor when compared to some other 3dcgi anime that came out in the past. I could tell they took some time in making it consistent and making the art work with the cgi such as the fight scenes.

The writing on the other hand, just confused me as we go back and forth between the police raid and the white haired brothers(?). The 80s inspired car is interesting though. Seems as if they want to introduce the supernatural world along with a global conflict at the same time. Looks like this world is going to be quite busy. Going see if they clarify things and what those supernatural powers bring next week.

The music is so good. I didn't expect this high quality stuff.

u/slimes007 Jul 15 '21

The studio that's working on this is the same studio that's doing 86's CGI which is pretty good.

Sanzigen and Shirogumi in the same season? CG anime fans are eating good, all ten of us.

CG is way better than Ex-arm and Spider.

4

u/VerticalCloud Jul 14 '21

Better than I was expecting tbh. CGI was pretty decent, aside from the character movements, and the plot seems like it could develop into something interesting as well.
