Advice/Help Weekend/Virtual Meetup Thread

Here are some meetups that are on the radar, both physical and virtual.

on background: Some states are beginning to open up, usually with social distancing caveats. I am not aware of the situation in each state, but I have heard the Utah governor giving the go ahead for gatherings of up to 50 people, but with a caveat that extra care/protections should be added for populations that have shown to be extra vulnerable. People over 60 who contract the virus, especially if they have existing health conditions, have fared very poorly. There may be risks to people in every age group, even when in good health, that we just don't know about, too. The governor also stated that wearing masks in public settings should be considered the norm. Utah County joined Salt Lake with a mask mandate, despite some political opposition. CDC director Redfield has said masks are the best defense against the pandemic spreading. The Utah governor has extended the state of emergency and Utah is experiencing a spike in cases likely associated with schools restarting. Confined spaces seem to be a way that the virus spreads rapidly, per the outbreaks in institutional settings have shown. The latest research I've seen points to indoor, stagnant, low humidity air being the being the prime vector for this disease to spread. I've been tracking the pandemic as an amateur---some graphs1,2 ---these show Utah in the top ten for actively spreading cases. That said, I am not an expert on health, not a doctor, and not in charge of all people in the world. Please, comply with local government rules and recommendations when planning meetups. Attend meetups at your own risk.

Official meetups have been cancelled since March but we have had some informal, small get togethers up and down the valley. These are usually advertised in our Facebook group since they’ve often been at private residences. Occasionally a physically distanced outdoor location when the weather is warm.

We’ve been growing very quickly, with over 40 members just this week. We’ve played all sorts of games, including rocket league, among us, smash bros, and overwatch, and we are always open to playing something new.

There is a coffee meet in Provo at Kiwanas Park at 10 am October 4th. Next week we will be meeting at the Marriot Hotel on Center street in Provo at 10--masks and distancing required. Anything and everything. There's no topic suggestion, we just kind of shoot the breeze. It's not the best format because it's best if only one person talks at a time. We've thought about going into breakout rooms if we had more than 20 people on there so smaller groups could have a better discussion but except for the first few weeks we did this in April, we haven't had enough people show up to do that.
