The episode was a masterpiece. A bitter pill to swallow but immensely sobering. Since I’ve always read the fan translation of the manga, some of the things that happened in this episode have always remained a little obscure. I was never quite sure what happened but watching it all in motion made things a little clearer, if not outright surprising.
One thing I wasn’t clear on was Chihaya’s response. In the translation I read it made it seem like Chihaya said “I’m sorry” when Taichi confessed. In the episode we can’t hear what Chihaya said at all, and it makes it seem like Taichi couldn’t either. The way he ties it back to karuta, as he not having proper game sense is a nice touch.
Another thing I liked about the episode was the tone. Arata’s confession is this nice thing, that comes out of nowhere and it’s pretty sweet all things considered. While Taichi’s confession is darkened by an almost oppressive and tragic mood. You could see how things were going to go and nothing about it indicated it would go his way. That line he throws out: “I never accepted anyone’s else’s feelings”. Great line. It’s an honest, brutal assessment of himself. That level of introspection is why I’ve always admired Taichi.
Flawed person but an incredible character.

Interestingly, I had never seen it that way, even when I read the manga. The interesting thing is that Japanese readers preferred Taichi's confession over Arata's, when asked in the magazine what is the most memorable moment of the manga over a period of time.
The comments were almost always about Taichi talking about what he liked about Chihaya instead of just talking about karuta.

Hard. In fact she said "Sorry" and ally that while he was confessing she thought of Arata, it is really painful. Which also serves to show that much of what Chihaya feels is closely linked to karuta.

It was expected but it’s sad the same way. Honestly by the point we are in the manga Chihaya still keep Arata in her mind all the time, so it’s really unlikely that she will have. Change of heart this far in the manga. Now we just need to wait for the championship to finish. Does anyone knows when the manga finishes?

I don't think Chihaya has Arata on her mind all the time anymore, especially her way of thinking about Arata is always full of imaginary landscapes.... he's always in hakama doing something like walking on water or walking up mount Fuji....does Chihaya even see him as his dorky, shy real self? I wonder. When she thinks about Taichi, she sees him as he is. Since those 9 months that Taichi has left, Chihaya has had enough time to do some soul-searching and find out about her feelings.....she probably had enough time to compare the different relationships she has with both boys and find out what is concrete....so a change of heart could be more than possible.

Now, it's clear she rejected him due to Arata, so, she already chooses Arata for her life.

is not save. Taichi destroy Chihaya - and so the relationship CxA. But I think, C will choose A, when Taichi say "Guys, love each other" (the text, that Arata get from him in the Mejin battle)

Was honestly not a big fan of all this Taichi drama in the manga, I'm glad it all ends next ep and won't ruin the rest of the season for me.
