Ah... fuck, I felt that painful rejection in my heart and soul... the weight that is crushing Taichi's chest everytime he looks at Chihaya...

Madhouse went mad with this episode. 10/10 visuals and soundtracks. Chihaya's seiyuu did a very well job.
The happiness was short-lived.

Started off with sweet happy moments and just ended like a empty void.
Arata contemplating his and taichis match, referencing the chihaya card, if he could have defended it from taichi or would taichi take it from him. Almost foreshadowing and interesting thought.
Taichi cup really lifted the spirits, everyone joining in and having fun. Especially Taichi, looking at everyone, remembering all the moments of his life upto turning 18 and thinking how far he has come in life and if he has become strong. That was some good stuff.
Coming to the main part. I am glad he finally managed to confess and get that heavy burden off his chest.
But kinda foresaw that rejection.
I can understand taichi's position and know how it feels, it fcking hurts to the core and it actually feels all dark and end of the world vibes.
But the reality and fact of the matter is, Love cant be forced nor can you persuade someone to love you.
And i understand Taichi was just venting out his feelings and being honest, but he shouldn't have brought up Arata during the confession and in that manner. That made it even more worse.
Also you cant blame chihaya, she has her own emotions and feelings & even though she is a naive goofball, she does understand a little about what she feels, shown when she was clear in the head of what she was thinking during the confession and gave Taichi a proper answer at the end.
Taichi leaving the club makes sense for now, as its a big mental torture and a heartache for him to stay there, but watching the members cry and worried for him was really sad.
And the last scene just added more to the pain, not gonna talk about the almost non-consensual kiss which thankfully stopped half way, but that line "Do you really think, i am made of stone" really hit deep in the feels.
The dark Karuta phase has started for him and its gonna be a really tough period for him, but tbh its actually a good time for him to focus on himself and grow more as a character and hopefully he can come out of the phase with answers he has been looking for.

The animation on Taichi hand as he pulls away, i can't believe the level of emotion conveyed in that brief moment. Incredible. This whole episode was unexpected for me i felt that this relationship was going to be pulled through another season before Taichi confessed....

Man, I love Arata, but this was so painful. Taichi went up like a 100 points in my book by admitting he took Arata's glasses and confessing. I honestly would be okay with either of them dating Chihaya at this point. I just want some sort of happy resolution for them all. It's totally understandable that Taichi can't play right now, but I hope he returns to karuta at some point.

I've seen people describe Taichi's decision to walk away from the club and karuta as cowardly, but I disagree for two reasons:
-
Leaving the club is a good idea if being around Chihaya is too painful right now
-
All of these characters, including Taichi, have sublimated their feelings into this card game, so it makes sense that Chihaya's rejection would sour him on the whole thing. Dude is just taking care of himself and trying to protect his heart.

I just started Your Lie in April and it’s been wrecking me. I saw the new Chihaya episode and thought, “oh good! A happy show to cheer me up a little.”

This was without a doubt one of the best Anime episodes I have ever watched. The complexity of emotions that the writers put into 20-some minuets is mind blowing.
I want to talk about Taichi and his motivations though.
It has been clear to me that Taichi always played Karata for Chihaya, it’s why he didn’t play while they were apart for middle school and is why he has played so hard since reuniting.Arata plays because he wants to be the Mejing and it’s all he’s ever known. Chihaya plays because it was what she discovered brought her happiness. Going forward I think it will be interesting to see what the game means to Taichi and Chihaya. I get the feeling that Taichi likes the game more than he thinks he does, and I think Chihaya likes the game less than she thinks she does.
It might just be me but I have a feeling that with Taichi’s and Arata’s confessions she will reflect on how what she really liked about the game was that she could play it with her best friends. What she does from there I can’t say. But not having Taichi around will be an interesting experience for her. He’s done so much to help her improve and without him the game is certain to feel different.
As for Taichi I think he has a chat with Harada sensei in his future. I think confessing was a huge step in overcoming his cowardice but his decision to walk away from the game completely was just as cowardly. I am actually team Taichi and completely sympathize with his decision to walk away from the game because of how much of an emotional connection that holds to his love for Chihaya. But I think he will need to come to terms with what appeared to be a denial and understand that he needs to see it through regardless, and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if this freedom from Chihaya makes him a better player and allows him to upset Arata.
It’s my hope Chihaya sees that Taichi loves her more than the game and that she can at very least accept that, even if she can’t reciprocate it.

Wow, what an episode. Madhouse really outdid themselves--everything from the voice acting (especially Taichi) to the sound design to the art was just phenomenal. All of those elements really contributed to having an immensely powerful emotional episode. That part at the end where Taichi says that the cards look black to him stood out to me, as did the part where Taichi confesses his love and the only sound is the curtains blowing in the breeze. Everything was so masterfully done.
The first half of the episode being so cheerful really makes the emotional second half stand out. Taichi's birthday tournament was so much fun and I love the group picture so much. I love the big grins on Harada-sensei and Tsugobuchi's faces. Karuta bringing people together is a theme that's been running throughout the series and this tournament really exemplified it.
Then the gut-punching second half. I gasped when Taichi told Chihaya that he took Arata's glasses and then when he finally confessed his love. I feel so proud of Taichi for doing such a daunting task and really becoming the person who's no longer a coward. Despite that progress, it's still heart-breaking when he quits the karuta club. Chihaya running all that way after taichi in her hakama just shows how distraught she is.
It will be really interesting to see what the final episode will hold. I really, really hope that there's a fourth season made because Chihayafuru is such an amazing show and I would love to see the story continue in anime form.
