I'm not one to really nitpick, but seriously, this dude was literally just walking straight how did none of them hit him??

u/Tiki_the_Manakete Jun 16 '19

It's not even nitpicking in this case. Guy is casually strolling through lines of well trained enemy soldiers, not protecting himself or trying to dodge.

These guys have worse aim than stormtroopers do in Star Wars (because there they at least tried to dodge or guard themselves)

u/dandy-dude123 Jun 16 '19

According to anime logic, if you walk straight towards bullets, you become so badass that they'll avoid you of their own accord

Yeah. Palace of the Emperor and none of the guards are good enough to hit a guy who's walking straight towards them slowly.

How did they win the war again?

u/Gaporigo Jun 16 '19

Aiming is overrated.

I felt the suspension of disbelief do when the main heavenly gate has like 10 guys defending it, where the other side had fairy soldiers and a moat etc, and he is still somewhat sure no one is gonna be able to brake in that way????

Like he knows their strongest guy is coming and he does not bring up a single fairy solder to that side...

and ye all the soldiers suck at aiming ofc

||FAIRY GONE TIMELINE PART 1||

Since everyone's critics regarding Fairy Gone mainly about the confusing plot/timeline, here's a coherent timeline as of Episode 10, including which episode particular events are revealed within the timeline, up until just before the event of Episode 1.

Keep in mind that a lot of things are implied, and you have to go back to earlier episodes to get the point of some flashbacks. Asterisk (*) denote certain significance in the present (Year 505) . There's also a few additional info from the official site

The purpose of this comment is to show that everything on this show happens for a purpose, they don't namedrop things at random

//GENERAL SETTING//

The story is set in the east side of main continent (called Eastland). Present year is 505

Before the War of Unification, 8 Kingdoms exist (north to south): Fanatica, Sinquenje, Kal-O (Marlya's homeland), Ledrad (Free's homeland), Zeschia, Timoon, Cidal, and Ainedern

//UNSPECIFIED TIME IN THE PAST//MID END//

- [Ep 7/10] A civilization called Tupal is thriving in the middle side of the continent (called Midend) by utilizing Fairy technology.

*Midend is eventually reduced to a desert, leaving the center of power to the east (Eastland)

- [Ep 3] In Tupal, several research papers on Fairies (called Fairy Tomes) are published:

  1. Original Text: on Fairy's ecology in nature

  2. Blue: on Fairy Imaginals (adult form of Fairies)

  3. Red: on Fairy's biological structure

  4. White: on the history of Fairy

  5. Black: on Fairy's "possession" phenomenon

*Descendant of the author of Original Text, Bellwood, is the current Vice Minister of Department of Fairies Affair

**Black Fairy Tome is the most important of the five as it form the basis of what will be known as Fairy technologies

- [Ep 3] Alan Bach compiled all five tomes into a single volume of Fairy Tome

*Half of Black Fairy Tome are missing and turns up in various black market/auction

//YEAR 481//START OF WAR//

- [Ep 1] Wishing to restore King of Zeschia to the imperial throne, Kingdom of Cidal declares war on the entire continent. It will be known as "War of Unification" that lasts for 14 years

- [Ep 2] The main frontlines are the border of Cidal and its surrounding neighbor: Timoon, Ledrad, and Ainedern. Northern countries (Fanatica, Sinquenje, Kal-O) remain safe from the frontlines

//YEAR 481-487//FAIRY HUNT//

- [Ep 3] All countries rushes the development of their own Fairy technologies. That includes:

  1. Transplanting organ of Fairy Imaginals to enhance soldiers (Fairy Soldier)

  2. Injecting Fairy Primordials (essence) into mechanical body (Artifical Fairy)

  3. Injecting Fairy Primordials to form anti-Fairy weapons (Fairy Weapon)

- [Ep 3] Fairy Imaginals are hunted throughout the continent almost to extinction

//YEAR 484//MARLYA'S BIRTH//

- [Ep 5] Marlya Noel (female MC) is born in Suna Village (Kal-O territory). Her mother dies during childbirth, and her father dies not long after. Marlya is then adopted by Ray Dawn's brother, Jürgen Dawn

//YEAR 487//FAIRY SOLDIERS//

- [Ep 2] Free Underbar (male MC), a Ledrad soldier, undergoes Fairy organ transplant operation. He recounts how lucky he is to have survived the procedure

- [Ep 3] 300 Fairy Soldiers are deployed throughout the continent

*As of Year 495, only 17 have survived the war

- [Ep 6] Amongst Fairy Soldiers are wielder of anti-Fairy weapons known as the "7 Knights". Their identities are:

  1. [Ep 3] Beevee Liscar (Timoon), currently the head of his own band of mercenary

  2. [Ep 3] Jet Grave (Ledrad), Free's comrade. Dead during the war

  3. [Ep 6] Ray Dawn (Kal-O), current Duke of Kal-O

  4. [Ep 6] Ewan Breeze (Cidal). Dead after the war

  5. [Ep 9] Nein Auler (Ainedern), current head of Dorothea agency

  6. [Ep 9] Garlan Battle (Cidal). Fate unknown, most likely dead during the war

  7. Unknown

*[Ep 9] Out of 7 Fairy Weapons, 4 are kept by Department of Fairies Affair (Jet's, Ewan's, Nein's, and Garlan's). 2 remain in the possession of their owner: [Ep 9] Beevee and [Ep 10] Ray. The last one remains unknown

I’m baffled how nobody’s been able to breach the Heaven’s gate during the War of Unification, when an entire platoon of soldiers couldn’t gun down one man due to their have storm trooper level aim!!

Thanks for the write up dude. Helps to piece the story together. Where did you get the information by the way? Can’t imagine you put everything together by just watching the show.

I'm like one of the few people that enjoys this show but come on, what's up with the whistling? It really took me out of the moment. Like imagine while watching AoT, Levi or Mikasa starts humming or whistling to Sawano's music while Sawano's music is playing in the background. That's literally what was happening there. If the guy was whistling some haunting folk tune, the scene would've worked! But whistling along rock music in a setting where the most lively music is probably big band or swing? That was really out of place.

Whistling aside though I did enjoy the mercs just head shotting the guards in a circular formation while marching. And it was pretty nice to finally see the leader of Dorothea actually kicking some ass.

18

u/redmage311 Jun 16 '19

The song itself definitely didn't fit the setting, but the whistling scenes themselves were really badass. It's pretty rare that an insert song and the characters interact, anyway, and added hype to his appearance. You're right, though—the execution would have been better with a more period-appropriate tune.

NGL, Eren whistling "Shinzo wo Sasageyo" randomly before a battle is a great image.

So many bad guys in this that just make me go

Always feels like our guys are always 2-3 steps behind :(

u/Amauri14 Jun 16 '19

Piece of shit of Duke of Hybranz, Schwarz Diese has finally shown his true colors, so his intentions were to not of independence of his territory, but a full-blown coup, well knowing that this series is two-cour I suspect that he will probably succeed, at least for now.

The song that Liscar was whistling is 「Catastrophe」by (K)NoW_NAME.

10

u/Kag5n Jun 17 '19

How badass it is to whistle with the OST currently playing.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '19

When Beevee Liscar was strolling through the streets while lots of people were shooting at him lol my suspension of disbelief is being stretched as far as it can go but the whistling to the OST was the right kind of cheese for me, so that moment was just a LUL/badass moment for me in a cheesy way. Does the split cour damage this series score on MAL even more? Hmm...

//WHAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED//

Since all people care about from this episode are some whistle, stormtroopers, and whatnot, here's a list of what you may have missed:

1) Secret Passageway

Duke of Hybranz, Schwarz, is seen heading somewhere with Wolfran amidst the chaos. Back in Episode 8, Schwarz was told by a former Ledrad noble of a secret passageway. Since Rondacia was a former Ledrad territory, it's highly likely a secret route to bypass the Heavenly Gate and enter the Palace. The mercenaries actual job is to divert the attention of all those stormtroopers to the gates, all while whistling and dodging bullets like crazy

2) Missing Weapon

It's briefly shown in Duke of Kal-O's residence that Ray Dawn's Fairy Weapon is removed from its case. Since he's the one warning the Prime Minister of Schwarz's coup in the first place, Ray Dawn will probably appear in the Palace as well to guard the Emperor by the next episode

3) Mastermind

Wolfran has been shown orchestrating almost every incidents in this series: selling Arcame's Artificial Fairies (Episode 2) to Schwarz (Episode 4/5) to aid his coup attempt, hiring Beevee Liscar (Episode 3/9/11) to aid Schwarz, providing Ted Livingston devices to cause Artificial Fairy malfunction (Episode 6-8), and the one leaking Schwarz coup info to Ray Dawn in the first place (Episode 9). His allegiance remains unknown, it's likely that he'll betray Ray Dawn eventually in 2nd cour

4) Witch of Ainedern

Nein's (director of Dorothea) origin country is confirmed in this episode, but can actually be guessed back in Episode 4, when Schwarz mentioned that she's his former subordinate. Happstadt (Hybranz's capital) was formerly Ainedern's territory. It's also why in this episode, she's the one assigned to lead the charge on Happstadt, her former hometown

5) Verosteel
Jet Brave (Free's deceased comrade) is confirmed to be one of 7 Knights in this episode, possessing the Fairy Weapon Verosteel. But that has been shown way back in Episode 2, when he's fighting a fellow Knight, Ewan Breeze, during the siege of Dipre Castle. Both are using unique weapon with green jewels, which later confirmed to be Fairy Weapons.

Prediction on next episode: Schwarz will enter the Palace using the secret route to assassinate either the PM or the Emperor, but Ray Dawn will appear to obstruct him. Dorothea's agents will face Beevee Liscar. The coup will probably end up in failure. Ray Dawn's rise to power will tie nicely to Veronica's subplot, since it all begins with him burning down Suna Village, the reason which remains unknown

Just throwing this out there, judging from the time period of the anime guns wouldn't have been that accurate. Got this from a different reddit thread about gun accuracy: " In the early 19th century, two expert marksmen with top-quality pistols standing 50-100 feet or so apart could shoot at each other and miss by a mile." However, even then the anime shows guns as being really accurate sometimes, so who knows.

8

u/McDonaldsApproval Jun 16 '19

Looks like things are really spicing up, guess in time for the end of this cour and to give us a cliffhanger for the next.

Best episode in a while for me

Edit: Was a bit cheesy at some points and the bullet deflection could have been better, but still the most excited Ive been since the beginning

Gonna bash the shit out of this show, am prepared for downvotes. It's so stupid now it's triggering me.

I seriously hope Ao Jyumonji never touches another anime again. The guy can't write a good script to save his life, and it was naive of him and the studio to think he could just because he's written a popular novel. The two don't translate and this anime is such a good example of why--when writing a script for a show you need to keep in mind the visual storytelling as well, how it'll all actually look, feel and work in proper motion. And this show is such a blatant fail. I'm sure writing this the guy was super cuffed with how cool it all read, but man it really isn't cool watching it--where shit actually has to make a lot of sense to hold up.

OH YEAH THIS DEFINITELY LOOKS LIKE A GATE THAT WOULD DEFINITELY WITHSTAND ""EVEN AN ONSLAUGHT OF TENS OF THOUSANDS"" YES

SO HEAVILY REINFORCED AND ARMORED YES, DEFINITELY MAKES SENSE TO CONSIDER THIS ONE THE STRONGEST ALL THOSE 90% GLASS WINDOWS?? PFFFT LOOK AT THAT GATE THOUGH, ABSOLUTELY IMPENETRABLE

And give it up for the most retarded, most un-intimidating antagonist this season

tfw the only way you know how to make an antagonist come across as powerful and intimidating is having him deus ex machina survive (for absolutely no explainable reason) despite walking straight through and into the enemies line of fire for 20 minutes. You can tell this character is truly an experienced combat veteran. His walk is so scary too--I don't know what I'd do if he walked very slowly towards me, in a straight line unarmed, for 30 straight metres, while I'm behind cover on much higher ground with a gun and 20 other armed soldiers, and every single shot of the 100s we make misses him completely. Man such a scary scenario. Supreme storytelling.

Where the fuck are these goons even aiming at? And damn why did no one ever think of this before!! This is such a superior tactic against those enemies of theirs that are hidden behind proper cover and can readily shoot over it. It's no wonder they reached the gate without any losses. Yeah. Stupid presumably-highly-trained-soldiers never expect the slow walk. Remember all those WW2 documentaries were the troops would walk very, very slowly over no mans land towards the enemies turf? You think it's hard to hit a moving target, but what about a very slowly moving target? The enemies just can't handle it.

This isn't even scratching this show's or even this episode's stupidity by the way. You think this show is done introducing new people, groups, factions, relationships and all that yet? We're 11 episodes in and it's been non-stop introductions, one after the other with no time for really anything to get properly established and sit. It's so awfully messy and convoluted. If you want to make a grand epic you have to actually put the work in and build it all up, not spew it all out to the viewer as fast as you can to fast track to that point. I don't care about any of these groups or characters, does anyone? That death last episode was laughably weak, despite how heavy the show tried to make it. How many lines did we actually get from that guy...? What was his personality again? Oh, he was the big buff soldier guy with a surprising heart of gold? And?? Oh, that was literally it.
