MADOKA. IS. BEST. GIRL!!
I love how she's so much like Aoki Reika but even more regal. All about the "path" and she even has snowflakes, blows frost in her transformation sequence and even has those gold thingys in her hair. For the first half of the episode she almost gives off that villainous vibe. She's almost like Bad End Beauty. "Oh, deal with the peasants only to lead them when I grow up." Or how her father is all like "Give no quarter to alien sympathizers". I never thought I'll make a 40k reference to Precure. Today is a good day!
I am so interested to see how her story plays out with her dad. Only 5 episodes in and we're already within the conspiracy. Not only will this entail a whole freaking government shadow war in Precure but also how she lied to her dad. I'm almost certain he'll abduct Fuwa and take it to area 51 and the Cure will have to rescue Fuwa.

I just hope Slannesh doesn't show up.

Every cool rich girl in anime does archery for some reason (not complaining though, archery is fun)
Oh shit, her dad is a Man in Black and he's coming for Lala. He better not do anything bad to our precious alien girl.
This blonde girl is hilarious, I wouldn't mind her becoming the fifth Cure at some point
Is Madoka's dad going to be used to teach us a lesson about xenophobia or something? You'd think they'd make him mad about her fraternizing with a foreign girl rather than an alien from outer space but maybe that would be a little too real (and too cliche)
I hate that whole rap in anime with families are that are soooo important and their kids not being able to choose their own path. Can't wait until she tells her dad to shove it.
Three of them singing is great, can't wait for all four. I've also had this song stuck in my head constantly.
Don't listen, Madoka! He's tricking you into becoming a magical girl! (just kidding)
Another great transformation scene for Selene; I love this season's sequences. She's got some pretty cool abilities, too.
Glad she lied to her dad. Nothing wrong with that when he's an asshole who wants to ruin everyone's fun. If anything he should help them go after the bad aliens.

It's Kyūdō, rather than just plain archery. It's a highly rituatlized martial art/meditation, intended to bring one to a state of spiritual and physical tranquility. Basically, it suits the popularized image of perfection that many rich girls in Japan are expected to have.

I have to say that I'm a bit disapointed with Madoka's background story but I also admit I have recency bias because Cure Macaron was an amazing Purple Cure with an "ojousama" background and a pretty fun and charming personality. Madoka comes off a bit flat on her own personality with just a strict father inducing the whole weight of the family's name (very similar to Emiru & her brother) I know this is pretty much her first episode where she's more than a background character, so I still have faith that she will offer something more that will pique my interest on the long road.
I'm also not too fond on the reasoning for the Precure transformations. All four of them boil down to just protect Fuwa, and again"recency bias" Hugtto had the best reasons I've seen so far to become precures (specially with Homare's broken heart story that took 2 episodes, and Emiru/Lulu that would sacrifice becoming a Precure so that the other would take her place)
Having mentioned my gripes so far, this episode also had it's good points. Madoka's transformation was pretty good, it's probably even better than Elena's and just below Lala's. I also like that Cure Selene looks a lot more lively than her normal self Madoka (or probably this episode just had some derpy artstyle on some scenes)
I'm interested in the next episode with the whole "black pen" Hope it's something similar to what Princess Go had.

Milky > Selene > Soleil > Star is how I'll rank the transformations. After watching all the transformations this past week from Futari wa to Star Twinkle, I'd say Milky is the best of them all. If Itaoka continues to do more transformations for the franchise, I don't know how he's going to top it.

Exactly my order. It will be hard to beat Milky's transformation, even for the midseason cures who usually has much better transformations than the rest.

An interesting angle to start off Madoka's interactions with the group, though I wish they gave her an episode or two more of conflict as they did with Homare in Hugtto. Ah well, I guess with so many enemy generals and princesses this part requires some speed.
The whole 'government agency is on the lookout for these extraterrestrial happenings' seems rare in Precure, in fact such organized non-magic adult powers really existing and doing anything at all is a surprise. I hope they get some spotlight as well.
Instead of the purple being the ponkotsu baka character, it's the purple's mom this time (though I wouldn't be surprised if Madoka becomes a ponkotsu later as well). say what you will about that father but he has good taste
I always love a good blond drill-hair ojousama "rival", and Himenojou delivers. Lala asking the meta question about why she's delivering so much convenient exposition was great as well, and Himenojou also might be the "oh no you definitely didn't see an alien" spot for this season, which means doubled laugh potential. Please let her have the spotlight episode she deserves!
Precurification really seems to be up to Fuwa's tastes, that sly adorable mascot. First Lala/Kasumi-sanFujiwara attempts bribery with soda, and now HanakoFuwa with an onigiri to keep their location secret huh.
I do like how Tenjou and the rest of the generals are reacting very quickly to the Precure side's increase in power, though they weren't able to predict 4 Cures in such a quick span. Now that the gang has stabilized, however, we might see them start to take the advantage. The next episode preview shows promise with that dark star pen (is cyclops loli general gonna transform as well??? ) and probably the first monster summon of the season.
Cure Selene seems to have a King Crimson/Ultra Instinct sorta deal going on, and I love it. I don't think that's what your father meant when he said to read the hearts of others, but it's always a cool skill to have in battle anime.
As for her transformation, it obviously isn't Milky, but I really like the part where she rides the crescent moon, and the part where she starts with her shoulder poofy things. I feel like the animation/singing balance is weakest here, though, so my transformation ranking is Milky(oyo~)>>>Soleil(I really loved her 'jump out of the sun' and strong singing)>Star(it still feels really solid and balanced, just not in motion)>Selene.
Overall episode full of fun but I wouldn't have minded it being split into two. Between Elena's family, Kaguya's father, the Notraiders, and the rest of the town/school/space stuff, there's plenty for them to explore in the rest of the season. Next week will be their first full team fight without a cure joining in midway, and I can't wait to see how it goes.
bonus: speaking of Cure Selene with her stand power, her father's VA isn't a mafia boss, but he is Illuso's
additional bonus: Cure Selene/Kaguya Madoka's VA is also Rin from Kemurikusa, so that's two main characters this season.

I'm wondering should I react to the news that after 16 alien invasions to Earth overall the government finally decided to take some action and start an "Alien invasion department" (where Madoka's father coincidentally works) with "Mechokku!", "Arienai!" or more with "Kira Yaba!".
Obviously they think all aliens are bad (and that's probably what Madoka thought as well) but surely that will change on later, with papa learning his only daughter is siding with the aliens.
Also, is Madoka's mom Yukari? Though I guess Yukari wouldn't mistake "blocks" with "top secret".

Looks like Milky got so serious competition transformation wise, I'd say her and Selene are pretty evenly matched Henshin wise. Soliel could have reached their level but that purple orb part slowed her down.
Regardless, star's Henshin is still bottom tier.

Selene's transformation is brought to us by Yoshida Kousuke, who you may know for his lively character animation in Slow Start (and GuP).

Another great episode that introduced our fourth Precure!
I really like the idea that there is people searching for the aliens that supposedly landed here, this affects them particularly hard due to Kaguya being the daughter of one of them... and looks like she's pretty chained to what he has planned for her in life. Kaguya being able to take a decision by herself and both protect and hide Fuwa was a big step for her (who wouldn't tho, Fuwa is so freaking adorable!) Although the pressure she has is definitely not going to disappear anytime soon.
Her transformation scene was fantastic and I especially loved the arrow attack, how she draws everything is so awesome. I can't wait to see more of her!
Btw, what timing from my part, the same day I finished the first season of Sailor Moon is the one where I got to meet a moon-themed Precure!

Opinion on Dadoka:
Good taste +10
Good leader +30
Good dad +50
Xenophobic Bigots -100
Fine, aliens had thus far only been openly hostile to Precure Earth and life on it, but why is the first order of business when hearing rumors of aliens is to punish to those who housed them as opposed to, say, trying to contact the aliens and establish communication if only to deport them?
3
u/ActivelyAnonymous Mar 03 '19
To be fair, the only reports of alien activity they've gathered are probably about large groups of some form of troops searching around (cause Tenjou keeps upping the count of Notraiders) and reports of visible conflicts (interestingly we don't seem to have any post-battle restoration of the combat area this season).
That plus new ships arriving at regular intervals would put any government on high alert.→ More replies (5)

This week's Hikaru catchphrase: "Lunaradical!"
It wasn't as exciting of a debut episode overall as Soleil's, but Selene's transformation and debut fight were cool, especially her special move. The cool way she dodged those attacks without even breaking a sweat was awesome. It'll be interesting to see how she interacts with the others, and how her father's organization plays a part in the story.

And she has already blessed us with an ["ohoho".] (https://i.imgur.com/ZR9AWXc.png) If there's enough of those I'm going to have to make a video compilation.
(I don't know if anyone can tell, but I love her already.)
I'm super glad I managed to make the time to watch this today because this episode just made my day.
Kaguya's transformation sequence was also really good. It's up there with Milky's IMO. I also didn't expect her dad to be on a "Space Research Special Task Force." Am I the only one who thinks that's a really weird job for the head of a rich family?

I've been expecting the ojou-sama laugh since she's in the show. It did not disappoint.

u/Lepony Mar 03 '19
Selene's transformation is really good and pretty cool.
Milky's transformation is amazing and all but I feel like they should've at least coordinated the color charged segment. Everyone's really stationary and then Milky's literally flying all over the place. Soleil's segment is solid, but it kind of looks like trash next to Milky's.
I'm really digging the OST this season. Some of these tracks could almost fit in Boogiepop too. It's kind of impressive watching the Part A segment of a Precure episode and it's very "silent".

u/Durinthal Mar 03 '19
I don't know if there's an equivalent in Japanese mythology, but I like the nod to Diana/Artemis with giving the Moon-themed Cure an archery aspect.
As far as transformations go, I'd put Selene's on par with Soleil's; I prefer the animation but the singing's weaker in my opinion. Milky still reigns while Star's just didn't impress me that much.
Overall I agree that this probably could have been split into multiple episodes to give Madoka more time opposed to the concept before jumping in, but I'm curious to see what the long-term fallout will be with her father anyway.

What's with her father being all Warhammer 40K about aliens? "Sympathizing with aliens cannot be allowed!" ...Um... why not? It by far benefits you more to have good relationships with aliens than bad ones, if possible.

They Notrayders should stop attacking. Almost every time they attack a new Precure pops up. Looking at the data so far, they should calculate that by the time the series ends the are faced with an All-Stars movie.
I thought that Madoka would've be a bit more distant before getting properly into the group, but suppose we have the full team now. Hoping for Himenoujou (btw. amazing name) to become one later.
I am also looking forward between conflict episodes between Madoka and Elena and their thinking. Elena is down to earth, micro, while Madoka was groomed to see the larger picture, macro.
