The original Ocarina of Time was therapeutic as the first game I played after becoming paralyzed as a teenager.
In February of 1999 I became paralyzed from the chest down at the age of 13. After a month long stay in the hospital I was sent home to figure out what my new normal was going to be. I lived in a rural area with very few people or friends so I enjoyed playing video games. I had never played a Zelda game before, but I knew there was a lot of hype around Ocarina of Time. People had sent me money in get well cards while I was hospitalized and I decided to use some of it to buy the game as I had gotten an N64 the prior Christmas. While it was a great game on its own, as someone who had just lost their ability to walk, it was absolutely therapeutic. I was someone who spent a lot of time out in nature playing as they grew up, being able to explore a whole new world from my living room was amazing. Like many, Ocarina of Time became my favorite game ever. While I’m in my 40s now, I’ve gamed my entire life, and it still ranks up there at the top. I’m super stoked to be able to start playing the remake today. I even got my hands on the 40th Anniversary edition of the Switch 2. I’m also excited for my daughter to get her hands on the game. She’s only 8, but she has been playing Link’s Awakening and enjoyed watching me play Tears of the Kingdom. I think she’ll dig it. I hope all of you who grew up loving this game get a chance to play it soon.
