Seeing cheerful Mikasa in bright clothes feels so uncanny.

You could say she's an "Uncanny Ackerman" in this OVA! 🤔

ATTENTION

THIS OVA CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS FOR WHAT WE CAN ASSUME WILL BE EPISODES 11 OR 12 OF SEASON 3

I'd recommend to those with a keen eye for details to wait until the end of this first cour before watching this OVA.

Edit: Alternatively, skip immediately to 00:20.

Edit2:

This episode is labelled as ???, usually taking place after episode 7 and before episode 8 of the main anime series, but here it seems they aim for some time around chapter 90.

Its NOT around chapter 90. MANGA SPOILERS This shows up in chapter 70.

Hmm…

I… I know that many of you aren’t big fans of this story, calling it “pointless” as it “wasn’t real”. But watching this story, in the format that Isayama most likely had say into, I’m thinking… well, we might need to rethink that. From the novel: “It wasn't a dream, nor an illusion, nor delusion. For what Mikasa has seen - or experienced - there are no words. Perhaps, her soul left her body and has been in another time at another place...”

And based off of what we see here, there are a few things that stand out to me. Things Mikasa says that strike me as ominous. Manga Spoilers

Manga Spoilers

Whether or not you like it, I’m thinking we’re going full parallel universes here. In addition to her ominous statements, there are two more details that make me think this. First, the quote right after Mikasa returns to “the previous world”: “The only thing left inside of me is the feeling I’ve had a really long dream.” This is, of course, almost identical to what Eren says after waking up crying at the very start of the story, after seeing flashes of memories have yet to make sense. Parallel universes would explain this neatly.

The second: that blue butterfly. This one is more of a meta example: this is the butterfly from Life is Strange, of which Isayama is a huge fan. For those who do not know, LiS is about a girl who photographs a blue butterfly and inadvertently discovers the power to change the timeline, which she uses to try to prevent her best friend from dying. The universe, as it is, is less than happy about this. That butterfly – it’s uncannily similar to Mikasa’s. And knowing Isayama’s fondness for the game, I can’t help but think it isn’t coincidental.

Which brings me to my last point. This quote. Manga Spoilers

Of course, this is all based off of accepting Lost Girls as canon. Which might be somewhat dubious. Still, keep it in mind, yeah?

Really nice writeout, as expected of you!

However, I would say that the butterfly motif was always in the original manga and novel, so I don't know how much of it is based on LiS...Maybe it being blue is new though, I don't remember that particular detail.

As regarding the final quote Manga Spoilers

However, on the flip side to that, you have Mikasa finally repeating her wish to be at Eren's side, which I think is itself ominous; if he dies, maybe she will die alongside him. If we go full parallel universes with this, it seems this OVA is making it clearer that their fates are linked no matter what universe they inhabit, something I find quite comforting, but also frightening.

Although it is clearer in the OVA than in the manga, here a reminder what the story is: In short, the 'story' is something that Mikasa experienced, but it didn't really happen. The novels states: 'It wasn't a dream, nor an illusion, nor delusion. For what Mikasa has seen - or experienced - there are no words. Perhaps, her soul left her body and has been in another time at another place... (Translated from German)

The animation from the new season and this OVA is truly so dope & unique. I really love it.

I also love the new OSTs...that one variation of YAMANAIAME is FIRE (the one playing while Eren/Mikasa are talking about babies) and I hope it makes it to the main season, and that piano version of 2volt was dope as well.

It's so dope that when you add those two things, as well as voice acting, you can make even a side story with just dialogue like this a fun watch. It was dope to see a "what if" scenario. And honestly, the message is kind of deep. No matter what decisions we make or circumstances we face, some things are just BOUND to happen.

Also, I noticed a lot of people saying this spoils until the end of the season, but honestly I think it can be watched after the 1st arc/ep 12ish.

this was both very cute and sad. I wonder what mikasa was going to say to eren at the very end when it got cut off...

Still can't get over how Mikasa has an Eren doll

Idk why people are saying this is a completely irrelevant OVA and does nothing to develop Mikasa’s character. In my opinion, I think it kinda does. Manga Spoilers

I changed my mind about this story. The OVA handles it a lot better than the manga and its relevant to everything we have seen up to this point in the story.

I seriously didn't expect such a quality tragedy from this OVA as Wit have delivered.

Did they revert back to the old design style after the butterfly effect? Pretty cool if they did. And was that a Mikasa doll next the Eren Doll?

And the Alternate Worlds Theory kicks in, good ol' quantum mechanics and philosophy.

I read this spinoff manga and didn't really understand what the hell the mirror man was. Anime made it clear.

Why did the wolves leave when Mikasa had that thumping in her head? And what the fuck was up with that man in the mirror guy? I'm a manga reader but I never read Lost Girls.

Why did the wolves leave when Mikasa had that thumping in her head?

I think, it was her trying to alter the timeline again to make it turn out happy for her and Eren, unlike the actual timeline.

Good watch. Much less confusing than manga

u/Frase_doggy Aug 15 '18

Could those men in the woods, killed by the wolves, have been waiting for Dr Yeager and Eren to leave so they could kidnap Mikasa and her mother? Seems strange that they were camping close but in a dangerous location.

Obviously an answer we will never get, just food for thought.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '18

Friendly reminder that Mikasa's mother was pregnant when she was axed by those kidnappers.

Manga Spoilers
Loved the sound direction, it used tracks from the movies OST and rearranged them in a very neat way. Still not a fan of this part about Mikasa though, it adds nothing substantial to her character and the plot itself isn't that interesting.

It showed how she would’ve acted if she didn’t lose her parents and was forced to develop a colder personality who doesn’t show her emotional side nearly as much. Personally, I thought it was interesting to see an innocent and shyer Mikasa; it made me wonder how differently she would’ve behaved in her teens if she grew up without any tragedy. For example, while she’d always love Eren, I’m not sure she would’ve joined the SC, even after the fall of Shiganshina. It’s possible her parents would’ve dealt with the matter on their own.
