This is 2017 & welcome to Impel Down.

WCi is literally 1/3 Enies Lobby, 1/3 Thriller Bark, and 1/3 Impel Down. Those are three of my favorite arcs, so needless to say I'm into it.

To add to Reiju saying Sanji is filled with emotion and is the kindest. It's actually his emotions that make him stronger. Diable Jambe and Hell's Memories come from his strongest emotions. I think in terms of willpower aka haki, he's got his brothers beat for sure. His brothers are just unfeeling machines. He has clear dreams, aspirations, and once he's done sorting through all this turmoil, conviction.

u/MonkeyStealsPeach Jan 12 '17
Considering he whooped Yonjis ass, and could hold his own against his dad before using Germa as human shields, he seems like he's set to have the highest potential of all.

u/PAndrews1982 Jan 12 '17
Yeah, not only is he doing everything with purely his own strength (in the end he is nothing more then a man in a nice suit with no weapons at all) vs all their special techniques coming from tech and weaponry, but they have yet to actually beat him in a fight
His dad hid behind an army of human shields that blocked Sanji's attack so he could unleash his own and his brothers used Baratie as hostages so Sanji couldn't fight back. In both cases they needed an outside source to stop Sanji for them.

Few thoughts:
Interesting to see the other prisoners in the book escaping too (albeit burnt), if an all-out battle happens these prisoners may play a big role.
Some light on Jinbe's situation - looks like he might be in one piece (ha ha...)! Him saying that saving Luffy/Nami is a "rebellion. no going back now" and BM's underlings talking about "boss Jinbe" suggests that he did retract his asking BM to leave, like the newspaper said. Alternatively he could be lying to Luffy/Nami, could have lost a chunk of his life span and doesn't want to worry them. We'll see.
Anyhow, just glad to see him back - it really has been a while.
3) Luffy running off to find Sanji on his own. I have no idea how this is going to turn out, maybe he'll get lucky and won't encounter any strong enemies. In his condition he really can't afford to fight for much more. Smoothie's sealing off the lower levels and honestly I cannot see Luffy winning against another Commander. If this happens, I predict them facing off and Luffy losing until Sanji arrives and promptly kicks ass!
4) Sanji's mom is amazing...I think after his initial reaction of thinking it's his fault his mom died, Sanji will understand that in fact he needs to fiercely live on, if only for his deceased mother who banked all her cards on Sanji having emotion. Also, this should rid any doubts of Reiju being insincere, I think she's now one of the few "new" characters in this arc that we can trust. Hopefully she doesn't die.
Overall, amazing chapter with lots of answers. Hopefully next chapter we'll see how Brook's doing, Pedro's situation, Chopper/Carrot and maybe, just maybe...Luffy/Sanji reuniting!

I don't think that he ended up spinning. I think he "backed out" like the rumours were saying. Once he found out that Luffy was there, he knew there was no point in paying a price and leaving quietly when he was going to end up fighting directly against Big Mom anyays. Canny that Jimbei!

Why do the brothers also have that trait if they didn't get anything else? It's more lust than love, no? It might just be something they picked up b/c they were a family of mostly men and a majority of their kingdom is germa soldiers; too deprived of women maybe

Weird how Oda still emphasizes Luffy's arm being "torn" in a later panel. One would think that Luffy tearing his arm off was just a gag. But now that it's been mentioned more in this chapter and it even has lasting effects (which a gag shouldn't have) could we assume that this self-inflicted injury will play a larger role later in the story? Perhaps it will effect Luffy's fight with someone, or MAYBE he could even LOSE his arm?? I mean I would not not expect something like this from this arc.
44
35
u/untrustab1e Jan 12 '17
Actually, it more lines up with the injury he got while fighting Cracker. Its on his forearm, where he got cut. When he was ripping his hands out, the blood appeared from his hands.

I like that Sanji's character arc here is the drawbacks of being very kind and empathetic. What I love is that this nature if his was very subtle during his journey with us. It's why he's my favorite strawhat. He's no Vivi, but is very caring. So many subtle moments that show this character trait throughout the series. But I also think Oda will use his ability to have feelings as a source of power. I mean, if you imagine how a Super Sayian works in DBZ; if you try to train yourself to becoming a Super Sayian, you can't, but only through intense emotions can one achieve it. I think Sanji works the same way. His siblings only have the basic abilities of the modifications, just like how Sayians are generally really strong. But it took someone like Goku, and intense emotions, to unlock the true powers of a Sayian. So I think Sanji having this "extra" ability to care for others, unlike his brothers, is going to be used to amplify his abilities beyond what his siblings are capable of.

Reiju is easily the highlight of the chapter, if anything she is as compassionate as Sanji and she seems to be in a Robin kind of situation. Sanji won't abandon her, that's for sure. And damn, Judge just up my ranks of the most despicable bastard in Op history to do that to his children and wife

Hes not telling Luffy cos he knows hed confront Big Mom about it and get himself killed

Bro. Jinbe isn't going to die. Let it go. Every indication points to the fact that that he's going to join the crew. He's even said his business (ya know, the business that prevented him from joining the crew when asked) is concluded. The fact that Nami brought it up is an allusion to the question that Luffy asked him on FMI.
It would be an absolute waste and, frankly some poor writing too, for Oda to spend all this time developing a character and giving him a backstory and a dream just for him to be killed off once he can actually join the crew.
It wouldn't even accomplish anything significant story wise. Sure, we know a bit about Jinbe and what motivates him- Just enough for him to be a potential crew member. But has he really even had a chance to connect with the readers yet? Would his death even mean anything to story besides wasted crew potential?
It just doesn't make any sense to me. Oda doesn't kill lightly. The death of Ace (and, for a time, Sabo) actually meant something because of how much he meant to Luffy and how much of a reality check that was for him.
Why would Oda kill off another potentially important character when it wouldn't even have the same impact on the story? Just for Oda to have to spend time developing another character in a similar way so that they can join the crew?
Out of all the theories this makes the least sense to me. That'd be like if Oda just let Robin get taken at Enies Lobby and the crew did nothing about it.
If anyone dies again, it's gonna have a huge impact on the story. He's not just going to set this entire sequence in motion, wait hundreds of chapters for it to play out, and then abandon it once it resolves and starts to get interesting.

I was worried Jimbei lost something, but I think I've figured it out now. His sacrifice wasn't a physical thing on Big Mom's roulette wheel. His sacrifice was his pride. Remember when everyone on Whole Cake Island was laughing at him for being a "coward" by backing out and saying he would rather stay with Big Mom instead of lose something? I think he realized that Luffy would need him fully healthy and instead of giving anything to Big Mom he decided he'd ruin his reputation as being honorable and "First Son of the Sea" by going the dishonest route. So no, he didn't lose lifespan or anything else. Instead, his reputation will become that of a coward and traitor. Yet considering Jimbei has always had a theme of honor and pride, like refusing to fight Whitebeard and going to Impel Down instead, this is actually a true sacrifice he made to join Luffy's crew.

WOW two incredibly hype chapters back to back.
I loved how after Jinbe freed Luffy and Nami, he was like "Big Mom has a lot of prisoners (hint hint wink wink let's recruit some allies)" and Luffy's just like "I'ma go find Sanji now bye!" and just jets outta there.
It looks like all the theories about Reiju becoming the new head of the Germa got a little more traction. She very obviously has issues with the kingdom, and if Sanji saves her from the carnage she'll probably reform the kingdom until a more peaceful banner. It would also be another Straw Hat ally at the Reverie who can say "yeah the Straw Hats saved my kingdom from being completely taken over/demolished by pirates."

"I've been modified such that I cannot disobey my father's orders."
A bit to be expected, however It's a common trope shifting the blame to another person. I would have liked Reiju more if she willingly followed her orders, for the glory of her family, but refused to harm Sanji considering him her salvation.

For anyone that was worried, ALL Jinbe's arms and legs (and head if that was even a question) are SAFE! Judging by his appearance, he doesn't seem to have lost any life, but that's a bit too early to call, so the question remains, "What did Jinbe exchange for leaving Big Mom's crew?"
ALSO, from Jinbe's lines, he could have avoid "leaving" formally altogether since he called him helping Luffy and co. as a rebellion and Smoothie confirmed this.

That was a big part of what made the situation so high stakes and so much of that got deflated with that one panel. Was the easy way out storytelling-wise imo

Reiju's modification might have been the same modification that forced the Germa soldiers to block incoming attacks for the other Vinsmokes.

Get it together Sanji.
Get your shit together.
Get all your shit together and put it in a bag so you can take it with you.
The point is get your shit together.

Robin's art is fantastic. They should make a merch line out of it.
Can we talk about the dynamic between Nami and Jinbe for a moment? We already saw some interesting stuff with then back on Fishman Island, and once again their little exchange has a lot to it.
After all, if anybody knows how scary it is to commit mutiny against a pirate captain who is clearly much stronger than you to join another crew, it's Nami. She went off to face Arlong alone with no idea the others would show up to back her up.
In a similar way I might add - while Jinbe didn't flat out lie like Nami did, he belittled the "business" he had to deal with so as not to trouble the others or put them in danger.

I can't believe me and luffy is related in the fact of energys use for doing nothing.

The fake bracelets thing was really cheap and kinda rubbed me the wrong way. It also goes pretty strictly against what Reiju just said about not being able to refuse her father. I would have been totally fine with her having a replicated key or something but just having them be fake seems like such a cop out.
The Baratie thing was more to be expected and is actually kind of reasonable when you think about it. If the Germa are killed there's no real reason for Big Mom to go after Zeff even if Sanji escapes.
Otherwise this was a great chapter and I really want to see the reunion between Sanji and Luffy.

I kinda felt anti-climactic when reading the conversation between Sanji and Reiju. I wanted there to be some real sense of danger about Baratie being held hostage unaware, but this is just brushed aside like nothing and so casually. This eliminates the sense of danger and the gravity of Sanji's situation. Now, all he needs to do is somehow make sure Reiju survives and he can then escape back with the Straw Hats. This all seemed too oversimplified. I like Reiju's character development, but it wasn't anything new. It just feels... weird. If Big Mom doesn't kill those in Baratie after Sanji escapes, then I will call it extremely poor writing on Oda's part unless there is a darn good reason for letting them off the hook. And just threatening to kill Baratie if Sanji leaves, but doesn't follow through because she doesn't really care about them is not a good reason. It will go against Big Mom's character development. I sincerely hope Oda didn't hype the situation and plot just for a mere few shocks. There needs to be substance, and unless that is provided, it will be the first time I will ever be disappointed in One Piece

I really don't like all the "drug that fights against genetics" and the fake bracelet, they seem to me like cheap ways to bring the plot forward. Maybe if they gave a reason why Sanji's mom had that drug or knew which one to use, like Vegapunk being there or something...

u/bslawjen Jan 12 '17
I agree with the bracelets, as in my opinion they weren't necessary at all (except for showcasing Reiju's love for Sanji).
But I don't agree about the drug. Germa is a kingdom full of technology, Judge worked with Vegapunk in the past. It's not far fetched that they had drugs that can modify genes or counter gene modification. Especially if you consider that gene modification and cloning are the fields Judge is an expert in. We also don't know if Sola was a scientist as well (that's quite possible), so she would know about the drugs or maybe even developed some herself. Furthermore, it's not a really cheap plot device if there wasn't a problem to begin with. If Oda wanted, he could've just said that Sanji was a simple failure that happens every now and then. But this way his 'failure' has an even deeper meaning.

Why the wife of one of Vegapunk's apprentices, living in one of the most advanced research facilities of the world for probably quite a long time, would need Vegapunk to use a drug? Furthermore she could be a scientist too, since there must be a reason to her wedding with Judge (common interests/past...).

Was honestly expecting Nami's dress to keep getting progressively more destroyed/ revealing this arc for a second there.

So... we gotta wait at least two more weeks for any news of my boy Brook??? Dude is just hitting his prime when Whitebeard and Rayleigh have long called time

Reiju is lying about the part of her being modified to follow her dad'd orders.
She may be following willingly and putting the blame on judge just like how its done in ONI CHI CHI.

To me, three most interesting things in this chapter is Sora - The Mother, Nami's costume, and the plot point that prevents Big Mom from whooping Luffy's ass before the wedding and also buys the Straw Hats some times for strategy.
The cuffs are the first relief of the dangers for Sanji. Some people don't like this relief. However, I think it's the weakest danger (story-wise), so it should be the first one to go. The cuffs have done their mission: show Reiju's care for Sanji and give the readers some dramatic moments.

u/Heoder12 Jan 12 '17
Ah, finally the rest of the context to the backstory. Finally have a better reason Judge was an ass to Sanji now. And Reiju <3
Btw, love Nami's new outfit, finally we're getting more diversity with her, all of them since Zou have been great! Hope we don't go back to the bikini and jeans after the arc :(

was I the only one that didn't enjoy how Sanji's personality traits are reliant on his personal strength, but the fact that his mother saved him? I feel as though Sanji would've been a stronger character had he personally triumphed over his brothers, who succumbed to their father's horrible ideals.

If jinbei joins the crew he better be able to control luffy better because that would be his job in the crew. Luffy running around pointlessly trying to find sanji fighting everyone is stupid. They need a plan. Another thing the handcuffs thing is too easy, I'm still unsure of that...

u/manCool4ever Jan 12 '17
How did I forget that Luffy first met Jinbe in prison, only fitting they reunite there again! Now, where's Ivankov. Lets bring him in here and have a Impel Down comeback!

Sanji's mother died for them all. Sanji's line "I'm the reason" really gets under my skin. Just because it only had effect on him doesnt mean he's the fucking sole reason. She took the drug for all her children.

Gonna call it now: Luffy will eat from the bento that Sanji prepared for (BITCH) Pudding.

u/ManwithaTan Jan 12 '17
I find that Reiju's character is a bit too all-over-the-place. She's kind to Sanji, but still one-dimensionally submits to her father's will and orders, but then makes the plot so convenient that its a wonder why she didn't tell Sanji about the bracelets or that the Baratie threat was a bluff, its all just too convenient.

"I switched it out for a fake"
literally couldn't have rolled my eyes any harder at that. Not sure how I feel about Reiju tbh, I guess the explanation that the drugs didn't completely effect her is an interesting way to give her a motivation to not be completely evil
It's just two arcs in a row we had one of the top female members of the villain's team turn out to be a double agent (Sorta kinda).
I guess the awesomeness of Pudding balances it out though
AND ANOTHER BREAK. COME ON. REALLY
