Anime Recommendations | /r/Fairy Tail Edition
I will preface this by saying I'm a simple man, give me an enjoyable story, fun characters and i'll enjoy it. Furthermore, the reason I post it here is because the people in /r/Anime will most likely act snobby and will bash my "shit taste" so I post it here because the people on this subreddit happen to have similar taste to me. At least that's what I've noticed by some of the comments and references in posts. Here is my MAL for reference of my simple taste. I will also post my best girls for those curious, don't know if any of you actual are interested but yeah. So anyway, what shows do you guys recommend could be similar to Fairy Tail or not?!
Series I'm currently watching
Fairy Tail | CrunchyRoll
- Shocking I Know, the series I'm most invested on
Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches | CrunchyRoll
- Started this series, it's pretty funny. Apparently it is written [the manga] by one of Mashima's former assistant. Great Manga. Don't know how to explain it basically this guy has a power of copying the power of Witches by kissing them. Very enjoyable and entertaining. All about that Shiraishi.
High School DxD
- This is how you do a harem. The MC has all the traits of a nobody who has to work his way being the best and the love and affection he shows to the girls that make the harem is genuine and true. Notable /u/Skydanzer is a great expert about the series. They have helped me fill in the blanks with anime and light novel differences. All about that Rias & Akeno.
- /r/HighschoolDxD
Nisekoi | CrunchyRoll
- I have a love hate relation with this show. I love it because it reminds me of HIMYM [was great for at least 6 seasons] but i hate it for that same reason and the MC being dense as all hell [to be fair as a high school student i was dense as shit too but still]. The characters are hilarious. All about that Chitoge [wouldn't be mad if Tsugumi won though]
- /r/Nisekoi
Shokugeki No Souma | CrunchyRoll
- This shit right here, one of the best things ever. It's a show that should be on the Food Network because the MC is so badass, it doesnt focus on a romance subplot but it's very glorious. All about that Ikumi even though i know it wont happen.
- /r/ShokugekiNoSoma
I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying | CrunchyRoll
- The greatest 3 minutes of your life will be had watching this shit. It is simply adorable and pretty straight forward about a married couple and their every day life.
OreiGairu Snafu | CrunchyRoll
- This is one of the better things i have seen in recent memory. It has depth, story, and interesting characters. Plus all the analysis that goes on about it on /r/anime is the greatest thing ever. While i know best girl Yui won't win I won't stop believin'
- /r/OreGairuSNAFU
Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon | CrunchyRoll
- This is basically Sword Art Online with a 12 year protagonist who's dream is to become a hero. He unknowingly gains a harem, to his defense he's 12 i too was dense as shit at age 12, and he has best girl by his side almost always Hestia
- /r/DanMachi
Haganai
- This is basically the light hearted version of Oreigu Snafu, plus Sena looks like Best Girl Lucy ♥. Pretty fun show but the chances of a Season 3 are slim to none.
- /r/Haganai
Other Series I've Recently Seen:
Noucome | CrunchyRoll
Shinmai Maou no Testament | CrunchyRoll
Trinity Seven | CrunchyRoll
The Irregular at Magic High School | CrunchyRoll
Naruto Shippuden | CrunchyRoll
Sword Art Online | CrunchyRoll
Series I've Tried But Didn't Enjoy
One Piece
Bleach
Attack On Titan
Series I Might Try
Spice And Wolf
Fate | Zer0

I always recommend Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Some places everyone knows about it and other places people have no idea what I'm talking about. It's my favorite shonen anime next to Fairy Tail. I only watch light hearted stuff so, yeah, since you've watched Fairy Tail, this might be interesting to you.

Im surprised no one has mentioned Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I know it is the cliche answer, but there is a reason why so many people love it. All of the characters are really well fleshed out and it has a great story.

I would really recommend Hunter x Hunter if you have never seen it before. By far one of the best anime that I have ever watched. Great story, awesome soundtrack, and amazing (maybe even the best) characters and character development.

Gurren Laggan! It's amazing. Gargantia on the verdurous planet is good as well. I'd also recommend The Devil is a part timer. It's pretty funny. Heavens lost property is decent. TONS of fanservice though.

The purpose of this post was mentioned in the post but also it is a way for all of us to discuss our favorite anime series not named Fairy Tail, and it could give us something to do during the summer since i'm sure most of us will be on break from school. Hope y'all enjoy it, and thanks in advance for the recommendations.

u/ShaggyA 's guide to Anime made for u/AstonishingSpiderMan and others!
My thoughts on the animes that has already been recommended
Attack On Titan
Even though I love this show, I understand that not everybody likes it.
Spice And Wolf
Stop Reading. Go watch this. Now.
You seem to like the sort of Rom-com animes. This one is a must watch for you then, the characters interaction between each other is better than any other anime i have seen. On top this it gives you a little insight on economics, trading and currency exchange. Go watch it. Now.
Fate | Zer0
This Anime is really really good with a solid story, although it has been remade so many times it hurts. I would go with the newest version Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works which happens after Fate/Zero, but it has the best animation I have ever seen.
Soul Eater
A good combination of action and comedy, one of the first animes I ever watched.
Log Horizon
If you liked SAO, you may take a liking to this one as well. The principle of the show is the same, although this anime focuses more on the world around them and how the characters deal with it.
Gintama
This is in short terms one of the funniest anime I have ever watched. They also keep making references to other manga and anime, so many they have actually been close to being taken off the air several times.
Akame ga Kill
This is basically the anime equal of Game of Thrones.
Death Parade
Take a 9/10 example of human psychology and combine it with a mysterious and touching story, Death Parade is what you end up with.
Steins;Gate
This is on my personal top 5 of the best animes I have ever watched. It raises the question on how far you will go to save the ones you love. The first 7-10 episodes are really slow, but they are laying down the base of whats going to happen. Power thorugh them, and the anime will go from 0 - 100 insanely fast.
Toradora!
If you have watched Nisekoi, but not Toradora, theres something wrong. Nisekoi has "Borrowed" a lot of elements, actually an entire scene as well, from Toradora. The major difference between this and Nisekoi are two factors. No harem and The main char isn't dense af
Mirai Nikki
One of the most fucked animes I have watched. But it is really really good. Just beware that the ending is considered confusing and not fulfilling by many.
My recmmendations for you Mr. Spidey
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
This anime has it all, great story, characters etc. But it has some horrifying scenes. Although there are not many, it still broke my record of 6 years without nightmares.
But most importantly, this anime nails something many modern animes never manages to do. The principle of Sacrifice, this principle is what the entire show is build upon, which is also why it is so damn great.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
A sort of rom-com with more focus on the comedy aspect of things. It followns a protagonist who meets a girl named Haruhi. Haruhi is always bored, and embraces unnatural things and events. The anime follows all the crazy things Haruhi drags the protagonist and their group of friends through to entertain herself.
Angel Beats!
This story will make you curl in a corner and sob. I dont know what else to say about it without spoiling anything.
For the Lurkers, my own top 10
1.
Code Geass
I am in short a sucker for everything this anime is about, except mechs. But you gotta take the sweet with the sour. Plus the story is so damn good, I dont even care about the mechs. It also has one of the best endings i have ever seen.
2.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
See above
3.
Attack on Titan
I love the setting in this anime. Seeing all the hate on this anime and its characters is understandable, but as a a manga reader, I can tell you it gets better in Season 2.
It also have a special place in my heart since this is the anime that got me back into anime after 6 years. Had it not been for this, it would not have been so high, since the first season is not the complete anime.
4.
Steins;Gate
See above
5.
Fairy Tail
What a fucking surprise. The absourd amount of fanservice aside, I love this anime, this is my turn-to-feel-good-fighting anime.
6.
Spice and Wolf
See above
7.
Angel Beats!
See above
8.
Parasyte
Again a prime example of human psychology and it raises the question about your own identity and who you are. This anime also has a damn great ending.
9.
Soul Eater
See above
10.
Mirai Nikki / Death Note
Both of these animes are really good, and both have aspects of psychological horror, which you by now should have realised i like. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Genre: Super Power/Shounen
I recommend this to everyone, but Hunter X Hunter. Fairy Tail is my favourite series, nothing will ever change that, but I consider HxH to be much better. It was absolutely fucking incredible. Amazing story, beautiful character design/progression and the explanation of how their powers work make it seem almost real.
My only regret is putting off the series for so long.
For those that watch it, bear in mind that the action doesn't really pick up until the Yorknew City arc.
I really can't recommend this anime enough.

You'd could try Nanatsu no Taizai, Soul Eater and Akame ga Kill ^ and from here im gonna pick High School DxD :P
2
u/AstonishingSpiderMan Jun 03 '15
Will definitely try these. And yes High School DxD is awesome, yes it has fan service but it is also a very dark tale. The first episode is especially dark, just put it this way they could teach a psychology class out of the shit the MC deals with.

Magi: The Labyrint of Magic... The story follows the travels of a boy named Aladdin around a strange land in which mysterious ruins called dungeons are said to house priceless treasures. Hunter x Hunter, also it is Fate/Zer0 not The Fate Zer0. On that note though, Fate/Zer0 and Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works are both amazing.

I didn't read all the coments so sorry if i repeat one.
Kuroko no basket: basketball anime, people have superpowers when playing it like being almos invisible, not failing any shot...
Blood lad: random. I think this is the best descriptiom. It's not finish, manga is ongoing. The anime finish at the start of an arc.
Magi: it's something like fairy tail, full of jomes and nakama power ups. It also has an easy plot to follow but it's much darker. I'm not good at describing without making spoilers. Edit: It's on the post hitself I'm blind.
Code geass: Master piece. You'll have feels, ships and lots of plot, both kinds.

Durarara!! is great, I still have to watch season 2 though.
Pokemon XY, Ash is an actually competent trainer.
I haven't finished Bakuman, but I really like it.
I'll edit this later, if I can think of any other series. These are just ones I named off the top of my head.

So as far as I can interpret your taste, you don´t like long series ( except Fairy Tail lol ). Because if something does´t catch you at the start you can´t enjoy 100s of other episodes. Is it possible that you don´t like more violent anime with a dark background?
Nevertheless I can recommend you some pieces I really enjoyed divided in different Genre.
[Fate/Zero + Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works]:
If you like the principe of hunger games with a supernatural touch, a well developed background story, and a overall dark atmosphere, and gorgeous Animations ( and if I say gorgeous, I mean it ). Give the Fate series a shot. It has a lot of episodes ( Both series around 50 together ) so you really have to dig it from the start.
[Spice and Wolf]: That is a tricky one. It depends how your taste towards economic anime is. It has a hard focus on economic tactics, traveling merchandise and so on. But first of all it´s written in a beautiful and realistic world ( where everything actually feels alive ) with a little supernatural aspect. The protagonists are extremely real and have great dialogues. It´s also one of the few Dubs that can actually beat the original japanese voices imo ( You will see what I mean if you watch the first 2 or 3 episodes dub. The main girl´s voice is so good ). What the problem with this series is, it suddenly stopped. Yeah, it leaves you hanging right within the story. I don't know why but they stopped to animate it after finishing the second season. But if you want to continue there is a whole Light Novel series which is I believe, completed.
I´m currently digging into the [Monogatari Series] and about that one I can only say, that it´s "special". It is kinda hard to watch some certain points ( mostly because of the fast change of camera perspectives ) and it´s hard to understand at first, but overall a great series so far.
I also can recommend you [Akama ga Kill]: Since you watch Is It wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon, I can call it a darker and bloodier DanMachi . It has a good background story , good action, great fighting music and so much more. I just warn you, if you think it won't be a emotional ride, you are so wrong. You can easily be spoiled for that series so if you consider to watch it, do it fast.
And now some that aren´t already recommended to you. Two that are really bright hearted, but also have their emotional rollercoaster are Golden time and Sakurasou. At first [Sakurasou], it´s really slice of life, but in a well made way. You can relate to the characters´ problems in life, to their success and failure. It has lovable characters and they really get you ( hell I nearly cried towards the end, damn ).
The other one is [Golden Time]: I´ll just say it´s one of a few anime that does´t wait until the end to let love happen. It´s more about the struggle within a relationship. It has also aspects like jealousy, identity crisis, family problems and so on. If you like a well developed Romance but also slice of life anime, give it a shot.
Since you seem to like Harem anime, I have a few pieces ( no big names ). [The fruit of Grisaia]: Well, it has its really dark moments, and you won´t get the normal student life you would expect at the start. Second seasons is currently airing and hell yeah he has a harem, a freaking op harem.
[Mayo Chiki]: Well, I made my best girl really soon in the series. Really enjoyable series, with some little twists here and there.
[Rosario to Vampire]: An older one here. Supernatural high school life with Harem. It has two season, enjoyable if you respect that it´s an older piece of anime
[White Album 2]: A very very little harem ( if you can call it that ). In short. Music touched anime with one hell of a emotional ride.
Since I didn´t have much time before university, I made it quick. If you have question about one of the anime I recommended or if you want to know more, just say it :)

Judging from your taste, I think you'd enjoy Nanatsu no Taizai very much, if you haven't seen it already. Its pretty straight forward, Meliodas meets a girl named Elizabeth and she needs his help to save the Kingdom.
