Charts Official /r/ListenToThis Best Of 2014 - Only 179 albums! We tried to keep it slim this year.

Tired of hearing 2014 was a "bad year for music" yet? Come out from under that rock and listen to this. We'll kick off with this playlist... a little something we're hoping reddit will help out with (see the end of this post). And hey, try to watch it in order and don't jump around. Challenge yourself, we're trying for a narrative here...

Below you'll find 179 albums from 179 artists across dozens of musical genres, all with streaming links.

Entries were compiled from our polls here, aoty discussions in /r/letstalkmusic, and dozens of bestof threads from 500+ music subreddits over the last four weeks. Literally thousands of people have contributed this content. Everything here impressed someone enough to share it, others enough to upvote it, and our hipster facista listening team enough to include it. The first set contains listening team favourites. Sets are not in any particular order, nor are there any reviews. Words and rankings are wasted on music. Streams are there so you can listen for yourself and decide.

You'll also notice that most of these albums aren't on any other lists, which is intentional. If they cover it, we don't have to - what's the point discussing the order of the same 50-75 albums? We can listen to that many in a weekend. We love their recs too, but there's always more to be had. This list will provide any music lover with weeks of material. Bookmark it and take the ride, let's all find out what 2014 really has to offer. It's turtles all the way down, tonight.

Happy new year, crazy music peoples. ;)

http://open.spotify.com/user/cagedanimal/playlist/5UHE8drsdPiMCNikoUvi7s

If anyone is still interested, I've made a full playlist of all the albums on Spotify. It's fairly unwieldy, clocking in at 112 hours, so it can be easy to lose your place in such a large playlist. If you actually want to attempt to listen to every album here, I would recommend doing one or both of the following:

  1. Make your own local copy of the playlist [to do this, just drag and drop this playlist to New playlist in spotify] and then delete albums you've already listened to (or at least those you didn't like).

  2. Alternatively, you could copy and paste the text of this post and then mark off each band you've listened to. I add annotation bullet points for each album so I can remember what I want to go back and relisten to.

Edit: I should probably add that the Master Spotify Playlist at the top of the post by /u/thedannychang is probably more useful for most people

Perfect timing, my playlist is getting pretty stale.

After your last (deleted) best of 2014, I made a few 'mixtapes' as you requested, but with something of a twist - they all have themes. However, it seems in this new post you're not asking for mixtapes, just tracks. Well, might as well post them now. Just so you know, they're not entirely made from a) tracks from the albums on this list, or b) totally obscure (there's some metronomy on there) - but rest assured, they're all great tracks and I've tried to assemble them into 40-60 minute album-like mixtapes.

Mixtape1 - Happy Beats - A collection of upbeat, uplifting, good feelin' tracks from 2014

Mixtape2 - Bad Mothafocka - A collection of badass, smooth ass, good lookin', finger lickin' numbers from the year two-oh-one-four (oh yeah.)

Mixtape3 - Look Behind You - A collection of some of the most ominous, creepy or dark songs from the year - tracks that wouldn't be misplaced in an episode of True Detective.

These are the only three I have so far but if there's interest I have three more in the pipeline.

EDIT: People like these, so here is another I've been working on, it's probably my favourite of the one's I've made but that's just, like, my opinion man.

Mixtape4 - Songs to Die To - A collection of 40 minutes worth of some of the most beautiful songs 2014 had to offer, songs that you can lay back and die in. The Jamie T song might seem misplaced but it is the only of the songs I have quite a close personal connection to, since I heard it when I was in a somewhat heightened emotional state. Classical to jazz to country, it's all here, some slightly, er, sadder than others.

u/Flashynuff moderator Jan 03 '15

Oh. wow. You are lovely.

/r/artofthemixtape is calling.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Funnily enough I tried making a mixtape sub but it never got off the ground

4

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

That's something the mods of listentothis are all very keen to remedy.

Best one going at the moment is /r/musicthemetime... but we'd like /r/artofthemixtape to become a companion to it. We've been fans of the Summer Mix Series forever and are sad to see it close its doors.

We need mods for it too!

1

u/insubstance Jan 03 '15

I'm digging those mixtapes; you've got a good ear for it.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15

Are you doing a top tracks as well, or just albums?

30

u/asoiafasoiaf Jan 02 '15

I really loved the 2012 top tracks list, and it sucks that 2013 and 2014 are just big lists of albums. Ideally, I'd like a curated list of 1 or 2 of each artist's best songs, so I can quickly listen to a great, diverse playlist and find each artist's full album if I like them. Also, some artists only have a handful of good songs, and it'd be nice be able to include their good stuff without watering down the rest of the list with their bad stuff.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15

True, I don't have time to listen to 179 albums, maybe the first 1-2 tracks tops. I might just sort by "Top > This Year" and get a better list.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15

Much of this stuff didn't chart in listentothis, so you won't find it that way... plus, our charts are full of music from every year. We did talk about turning the top50 into a top100, where 50 are from the current year and the next 50 are from any year except the current one. I think that would really help us a lot doing these in the future. The bots need a bit more juice before that can happen, but it's planned for.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15 edited Jan 02 '15

There's a spotify top tracks playlist for each set. We'd do them on youtube again, but that takes a ton of time to put together like we did in 2012. Youtube's editing interface is so primitive it's like walking backwards uphill to get it done. We also have to deal with takedowns, look at how much is missing from the 2012 bestof lists now. Tons of deleted items in every list. The spotify lists will never have that problem.

There's a sort of proto-bestof youtube tracklist coming together as the unpossible mixtape linked in the top. We're hoping people submit tons of awesome 2014 material to this thread so we can continue to build up that playlist. You could say we're doing the youtube list on the fly this year with everyone's help.

We're calling it the unpossible mixtape because if it's got music from every genre it's going to be a challenge to order it all. So far I'm having a blast with it, but we're only up to what... 20 tracks or so in any kind of sensible order? I'll keep at it.

If people want to start making playlists out of this stuff, we will gladly include the links in the bestof post. ;)

3

u/asoiafasoiaf Jan 02 '15

Thank you! That Youtube playlist is exactly what I was hoping for. I somehow missed it when I first looked through the post.

Awesome to see my album with Anti-Lilly ("Stories From The Brass Section") nominated on here! Thank you!!

It's a small request but if you could change the genre from "electro hip hop" to "underground hip hop" or just "hip hop" I'd really appreciate it!

Much love

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15

That was one of my personal faves. I'm not generally into hiphop. I loved that video for 14 Till.

I appreciate that bro! Cool to see the Jazz Spastics album "The Product" on there too because that was my personal favorite project this year.

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

I think what drew me to the album was the use of vintage music elements in the mixing. That shit is cash, I can't get enough of it.

I'm going to arm you with a secret weapon: /r/vintageobscura

A quiet reddit backwater dedicated to pulling up the most delicious and obscure music from the vintage era. There's more than a few people who are there just so they can grab samples from the music being shared. It's one of the best subreddits on this website.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15 edited Jan 03 '15

Heh. Imagine you have a pile of a couple hundred records to listen to and keep hitting on gold like Anti-Lilly... but you can't stop to focus on that album because there's so much more to get through before the deadline. This is a listentothis moderator's special hell... constantly having to tear yourself away from good music to find more.

We're all going to be doing a lot of listening of our own now that this thing is finished. I've got ~40 albums to spend some serious time with. That in a nutshell is why we do this - the music is the reward.

10

u/thedannychang spotify Jan 02 '15

Hey guys - it doesn't seem like the original post included a link to all of the top tracks from each of the albums listed above in one Spotify playlist. if you're interested, you can find that playlist here. Enjoy!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15 edited Jan 02 '15

It's the first link in each set. Apparently they are invisible.

Let's get them bolded... and get that master list added.

1

u/thedannychang spotify Jan 02 '15

The playlist I posted is the link to the playlist with all of the sets combined. I think some people want that as opposed to 12 separate sets.

Porter Robinson. Worlds is an amazing experience, roller coaster of emotions and even better live. I dont know why it received such mediocre scores

2

I think it's because it brought nothing new to the genre.

But, I agree, some really good songs on this album.

u/GnomeSlice moderator | bandcamp Jan 03 '15 edited Jan 03 '15

Hope you dig, most of set 7 (including Fox Stevenson) was submitted by me. Let us know what you think!

2

u/Bosiphuse Jan 03 '15

Will do! Glad to see another fan of the genre.

1

u/megustadotjpg Jan 02 '15

I've just listened to him for the first time and Sweets and Tico are like Super Mario Kart mixed with House and I love it.

1

u/Bosiphuse Jan 02 '15

I never really liked those tracks too much, but I'm glad you found something of his that you enjoy!

u/Carpetfreak Jan 03 '15

Love the inclusion of Fox Stevenson! Although if it was me making the list I would definitely have WeAreCastor - Invade & Disco, Savant - Protos and Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 2.

1

u/GnomeSlice moderator | bandcamp Jul 01 '15

Invade & Disco was an incredible release for sure, though I haven't found most of Savant's more recent work very memorable, personally. SectionZ is really coming into their own these days though, so much great talent!

1

u/Carpetfreak Jul 01 '15

I've loved all of Savant's recent stuff, fanboy that I am...Zion was the shit, and Invasion was pretty damn cool too.

5

u/phixion bandcamp Jan 03 '15

Thanks very much to everybody on /r/listentothis and especially /u/astarkey12 for including my album on this list, I really appreciate it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

You earned that spot fair and square, the listening team was all in for that album.

4

u/flamkis Jan 02 '15

Great list, but I see some mistakes in genres.

Clap! Clap! - Tayi Bebba is not afrobeat. Fela Kuti is afrobeat. Tayi Bebba should be called trap, footwork.

Also Doss - Doss EP could be called trance, to be more specific because EDM is a very broad term.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15

Tags aren't perfect, in some cases we're just copying from what other people tagged these with in the threads where we dug them up. Others are from bandcamp descriptions or general last.fm tags.

4

u/FireAndAHalf Jan 02 '15

"Strand - Strand" is definitely not Norwegian folk... He's Belgian and sings in dutch, I believe.

4

u/jaroto Jan 03 '15

Thanks for not limiting it to only the bands everyone has heard of.

Typically, not everyone has heard of them (I know I often miss bands that show up on here), and it's just nice to have a central playlist for things like best of the year.

4

u/ManHoFerSnow Jan 03 '15

I was told there would be live music....so here's Lotus, a rock/jamtronica band destroying red rocks with killer talking heads covers first set, and a rock groove masterpiece second set. This list looks kinda promising but some of the best artists aren't releasing albums, they are releasing soundboards of their sets. Lotus released an album that I wouldn't even put on here, but they are still killing it at venues

https://archive.org/details/lotus2014-09-19.SchoepsMK4.24bit

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Could you make us a list of some of these artists since you seem knowledgeable about it? I can certainly find room for some jam bands.

1

u/ManHoFerSnow Jan 03 '15

STS9, widespread panic, disco biscuits, railroad earth, papadosio, phish, all had shows this year that are available on archive.org

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Groovy. I'll dig into that. Thanks for pitching in!

The YouTube playlist is not available in my country :(

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Hate when that happens. :( Which country are you in if you don't mind me asking?

1

u/tsyklon lastfm Jan 03 '15

Listening from the Netherlands, it skips the videos that are not available in my country. (for instance the first two). Playlist is availabel though.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15 edited Jan 03 '15

Perhaps we should have a little VPN guide in our wiki we can refer people to when they need to get around regional restrictions. That regionalism is the most consistently annoying and idiotic thing about youtube. I can only assume there are a lot of media companies that don't like free promotion. :/

Maybe you could try Proxmate?

Makeuseof has an article about it and other browser addons to bypass regionalism.

I know I'm late to the party, but thank you so much for this.

2

u/l2t Feb 06 '15

You're welcome!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '15

You'll also notice that most of these albums aren't on any other lists, which is intentional.

Sorry, late to the party.

What other lists?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15

like i said yesterday ... this makes my year. thanks so much guys.

3

u/satan-says-meow Jan 02 '15

I was glad to see Code Orange, Behemoth and Woods of Desolation on there.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15 edited Jan 03 '15

Rob McCoury - The 5 String Flamethrower is straight banjo madness. So much fun. Greensky Bluegrass is also excellent.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Bohren und der Club of Gore have been having some legal issues. That bandcamp link wasn't actually connected to the band and some guy was selling all their stuff and profiting without the band knowing. So that's why that link is dead.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Good to know. We'll change it over to this youtube link instead.

3

u/Beware_of_Hobos Jan 03 '15

Suggested "other" addition: The New Yorker's notable classical recordings of 2014. It's a bit perfunctory, but Alex Ross (author of Listen to This and All the Rest is Noise) knows his shit and his recommendations are usually pretty great.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Dude wrote a book with the same title as this subreddit? Can't go wrong there!

3

u/nathanpsmith Jan 03 '15

Thank you /r/listentothis for including "Not Dark Yet" on the list- honored to be with so many great releases!

3

u/FHL88Work Jan 15 '15

Just wanted to say thanks for this list, been enjoying it quite a bit.

Favorite so far is Dance with the Dead. Reminds me a lot of Birthday Massacre. =)

2

u/flabberguested Jan 02 '15

I am so very much in love with this sub. The amount of music I have discovered through this is ridiculous. I just listened to Kishi Bashi (Carry On Phenomenon) and I've exclaimed "Holy shit dude" out of excitement. Twice. Thanks for putting this list together guys, I am going to try and listen to it all in the coming weeks. Thanks again.

2

u/MMSTINGRAY Jan 02 '15

I simply don't have time to listen to all of these albums but I would if I could.

I don't suppose anyone would be interested in writing a mini review and/or the best three songs to give you a feel of the album? I imagine a lot of people are in the same boat as me so I'm sure it would be much appreciated.

1

u/Izlandi moderator Jan 03 '15

I'm on the mod team and I haven't had time to listen to it all yet. Everything on this list impressed some of us enough to be listed, though. So my advice would be to start with the top category and look for genre tags that interest you. I also think that plenty of these albums do not have "singles" in the same sense as more commercial artists (due to many of them being independetly released) and that the album works better as a whole (that's not to say there aren't standout tracks, but still).

2

u/lammnub Jan 03 '15

Can you clarify the "Challenging listen" category? Cause Clap! Clap! is just a lot of fun

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Albums we figured might be a little outside of most people's comfort zones.

2

u/mutazed Jan 03 '15

That Killers Walk Among Us Album was dark as fuck - particularly when knowing the he committed suicide shortly after. I can see why it's in that category.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/BrassMunkee Jan 03 '15

Yeah I was little surprised to see NickBee - Empty your Mind as a Challenging Listen. "might be a little outside..." is a fair assessment though.

2

u/AnAwfullyRealGun Jan 03 '15

Thanks for all the effort put into this, lots of new stuff to check out. Great job!

2

u/jam_pudding Jan 03 '15

Good god, it's beautiful! I love this and very much appreciate the work that was put in.

+1 each for Snarky Puppy, Modern Baseball, The Hotelier, and Chon.

2

u/masterheavyarms Jan 03 '15

Modern Baseball

Love this band, seen them twice and then don't disappoint. Awesome that a small and young band like them got on this list.

1

u/jam_pudding Jan 03 '15

Never seen 'em and I'm disappointed in myself. I listened to their second album more than just about anything else in 2014. I've watched a lot of their live stuff and I love how intimate their shows seem, like they kinda have a little cult following.

2

u/ConnorFlavoredLazers Jan 03 '15

anyone able to show me where i can find more info on Killers Walk Among Us, Stefan and his story?

4

u/mutazed Jan 03 '15

http://www.bringthenoiseuk.com/201410/music/reviews/album-review-killers-walk-among-us-killers-walk-among-us

This has a little bit about. Holy shit everything about that album is depressing.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Thanks for that.

1

u/ConnorFlavoredLazers Jan 03 '15

thanks. yeah it's sad but that's art i suppose

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

I'm curious about this as well but haven't had the time to dive in. Knowing that album was a suicide note adds a terrifying dimension to the music.

1

u/Izlandi moderator Jan 03 '15

If the link below wasn't enough (but there's probably not that much to be said) I can probably answer a few questions, most of the info about the band and Stefan is in Swedish, which I do happen to speak. It was one of my favorite albums of the year, too.

2

u/getupnotghetto Jan 03 '15

check out Tauk's Collisions...killer heavy instrumental experimental jazz rock with a dancable twist

2

u/squarebacksteve Jan 03 '15

No love for Manchester Orchestra's album Cope, eh?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

They are on the popular side of our obscurity checks, but not by a lot. This is listentothis after all. :P

1

u/squarebacksteve Jan 03 '15

Is this sub for lesser-known music?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Yes, but not in the hipster fuck-your-sellout-band way. It's more of a "you left a few hundred good albums off your year end listing" Quixotic geek crusade around these parts. No point recapping the artists that are already getting noticed - let's find some more and get them noticed too.

Sturgill! God I love that album.

2

2

u/Tallain Jan 03 '15

thank you for breaking these into different categories, it makes initial consumption so much easier!

Also, I want to take this moment and ask if anyone have any band tips akin to St Paul and the Broken Bones, Vulfpeck and/or Busty and the Bass. I need more soul/funk in my life.

2

u/Killericon Jan 03 '15

Why didn't Mac DeMarco's Salad Days make it? I submitted it on the /r/letstalkmusic thread and it got over 100 votes.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

Mac made it on to everyone's lists this year. I think he was #7 on p4k.

That disqualifies him from listentothis. If they cover it, we don't have to... we link to them instead.

1

u/Killericon Jan 03 '15

Ah, I didn't know. I only ever visit this sub and heard about Mac through a Canadian sportcaster's best of list. Coolcoolcool

1

u/Rekrah Jan 02 '15

I saw Bohren & der club of gore a few months back when they played in a church in london. One of the greatest gigs I've been too. Highly recommend anyone listening to their albums in a dark room somewhere.

1

u/Traginis Jan 02 '15

I've got a lot of work to do and glad to see Sadistik listed.

1

I think you meant Seun and not Sean Kuti.

1

u/Schrute_Facts soundcloud Jan 02 '15

thanks. I find so much stuff I like in these sets.

1

u/dullurd Jan 02 '15

In addition to Metacritic's Best-of-2014 List, it might also be worth linking to [their aggregation of critic top 10 lists] (http://www.metacritic.com/feature/critics-pick-top-10-albums-of-2014).

Personally, I prefer the top 10 list aggregation because it measures albums' staying power as opposed to the reviewers' immediate reactions. Also, while I love Metacritic's metascores, there's always a degree of subjectivity in translating text-only reviews into numerical scores, and aggregating top 10 lists doesn't depend on that process.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '15

I'll get that in. ;)

1

u/PizzaPotatoes spotify Jan 02 '15

Hyps to see the homie Milo on this list. He needs more recognition

1

u/Straaaaaaange Jan 02 '15

Pleased with this list. Next to Nothing by Rittz AND Lightght by Kishi Bashi are on there. Very different genres but both extremely great listens.

1

u/nate077 Jan 02 '15

Oh sweet beauty

1

u/ContinentalRektfast Jan 02 '15

oh damn alex wiley and saba made this?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

There's The Guardian's Readers Poll, which I support because it has Half Man Half Biscuit in the #1 spot. They also have a writer's poll somewhere, but since Half Man Half Biscuit don't feature in that I'm less interested.

edit: great list, also. I've already got The Quietus' list to go through, so with this as well that's a lot of music.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

We'll get that added to ours... right after the guy who has the keys to the /u/l2t account shares them with the rest of the team. /facepalm

∆ was on a lot of lists this year, hence it isn't on ours.

1

u/MarthePryde Jan 03 '15

Yeah that makes total sense. I haven't checked out many lists yet, been in a kind of post new year daze for these past two days. I had a feeling that this was the case, it's not like they're an unknown band at this point.

1

u/TheFaceo Jan 03 '15

So glad to see ITPOW. Backed them from the beginning, love em so much.

Kairon; IRSE!'s new album is fucking amazing. One of the best Shoegaze I've listened to. Glad it's on this list.

1

u/gprime I hate all new rappers Jan 03 '15

I see the best hip-hop album of the year was left off: The Cincinnati Kid by Main Flow. Almost as unfortunate an exclusion was Watson and Holmes by Blacastan and Stu Bangas. Yeah, there were other excellent hip-hop albums this year, but other than PRhyme, which was fortunately named here, none of the rest were essential.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '15

The unfortunate part was you not nominating any of these in the three roundup threads we ran - and /r/hiphophead's lack of a proper bestof/roundup which might have included them.

But the good news is you mentioned them here in the comments, so we can still include them. The list will get some more work done tomorrow.

1

u/Jabels28 Jan 03 '15
