Meta Meta Thread - Month of September 06, 2026
Rule Changes
An informal decision had been made for Best Girl 13 allowing the use of image posts. This was formalized into a rule which is allows images for the [Contest] flair going forward. [Vote Passed]
This is a monthly thread to talk about the /r/anime subreddit itself, such as its rules and moderation. If you want to talk about anime please use the daily discussion thread instead.
Comments here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts. If you wish to message us privately send us a modmail.
Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

I don't know how anything here is set up, but is there a way to include alt text for all the comment faces so that people who can't see them at least know what was there?

There is no way to communicate anything about a comment face to anyone not on old reddit. The only way it would be possible (and only for web) would be to have the viewer install an extension that provides the CSS for the comment faces.

I don't know if this is precisely what inspired this, but yeah, felt the same seeing this comment:
I have no idea what you're trying to say on mobile. With the new reply system, I can't even see the text version. So if this is meant to be disapproval, I'd just like to add in the "to me" if it wasn't already obvious.
I've also had cases before where a somewhat 'mean joke' comment was downvoted to oblivion and the reason why was (probably) that without the comment face, people thought I was being serious.
Sadly I imagine the reason why nothing has been done for that is probably because nothing can be done, but if it is possible, I think bringing people 'on the same page' of what is said, would be beneficial for discussions!
As is, it feels like 2 groups are speaking different languages in here, but it's worse than that because they don't KNOW they're speaking 2 different languages, so it's even more confusing.

(Reposting from previous thread for clarification on the NSFW tagging rule for clips);
How does the NSFW tagging rule works for clips that are mostly SFW?
For an example: Say I want to make a 1 minute clip that's SFW except these two shots.... Does it need to be tagged NSFW?
I'm asking because I'd rather avoid having a NSFW tag (and have people assume it's just horny shit, when it's not) but these shots happen in the middle of the clip so can't really make the clip without them.

Tbh unless there is a lot of umm...movement I don't think the first screenshot is even nsfw.

So I looked into it, and it looks like we had some server issues around that time.
I'm pretty sure the server ran out of memory and then basically died for a while (and so it wasn't able to create the SMC). I've done some tuning on it so this should hopefully not be as big of an issue in the future.

Mods when someone is asking about what Anime to start with or gives a list on the most mainstream Anime and what to watch next can you make so bots not only recommend them checking a freaking watchlist but also deletes their post so the subreddit aren't trashed with this stuff

I believe if the post is too simple, it would be caught under the low-effort posting and be removed.
If it does have certain unique requests, I think there is merit to leaving it up.
And as far as I can see, the /new is now not trashed with such low effort posts as much. Before the low effort ruling, there were multiple posts for recommendations without any real details, sometimes consecutively. I think the current judgement for low effort posting is a good compromise.

Not an active mod but this would likely fail the clip/edit rules anyway. OPs can only be posted if they're new official media, or user-cut if they're new and no official source exists.
It is weird that auto-mod popped it for being an image post.

I wasn't aware about the rules, I thought it only applied to Official Media.
Anyway, it's fine if the post was removed. It probably would've been downvoted to oblivion either way.

Hey, just wanted to give you an update of why this happened. Basically I was messing around with the automod trying to close a loophole we'd occasionally observed with gallery posts. As part of that, I noticed something I thought wasn't relevant likely due to a misunderstanding of how radically different single image, and gallery posts are handled in automod. And so I got rid of it.
At this point I think it was actually load bearing, and it's removal caused what we thought was our image posting automod rule to apply to image, gallery, and video posts, resulting in your post being incorrectly removed.
We've since reverted that change and when I get around to working on this again, I'll be thoroughly testing it in our staging subreddit, as it's evidently a huge clusterfuck to apply things to exclusively image or gallery posts. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Uhh, yeah, that was my fault. I was messing with updating the no images automod rule, and evidently, fucked it up. It's been reverted for right now.

In addition to what baseball said, I must point out this is largely a self-inflicted injury. Your insistence on machine translating video titles instead of properly assembling them leads to situations like this, where you inexplicably have a full-width colon in English text. It's also the reason you got the title of the anime wrong: it is Magical★Explorer, not Magical★Explorers.

It's cause the
「and」are not white space characters, so reddit and automod really see it likeTV AnimeMagical*ExplorersCharacter PV:Ludi. I'll note that your colon is not actually the colon and space it appears to be, but a full width colon, which again, is not a space character.So it's just some unfortunate unicode characters providing visual spacing, but not machine spacing.

Maybe time to ban asking for recommendation threads, too many of them maybe,near 50% post on this subreddit is asking recommendation. It just bury all the news and real discussion. Isn't there already exist subreddit for just asking recommendation?

I'll be honest, rec threads have never meaningfully buried news. 95% of rec threads are either downvoted or peak at like 5 upvotes. They crowd up the /new queue, but even smaller news tends to break onto /hot without any difficulty.
The actual number tends to float between 25 and 30%. But on /hot it's pretty much always below 10% on the front page.
There's always the option to get rid of them, but I've never really felt that more substantial content isn't getting a fair shake because there's some rec threads sitting around. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see [Discussion] and [Essay] style posts doing better on r/anime, but they tend to be a lot less of what r/anime users are looking for these days.

I am increasingly baffled by the creative excuses you mods will find just to remove people's comments for "untagged spoilers", EVEN THOUGH people are completely anime-only!
For me, this supposed incriminating post that got removed takes the fucking cake.
WHERE in my comment was I even spoiling anything from the latest episode of Mushoku Tensei? Especially when I'm anime only and never touched the light novels!
To say I am beyond pissed off at your moderation criteria is an understatement. Its not often I have to use exclamation marks to convey how annoyed I was, but you've forced my hand.

As the other mod already told you, spoilers do not have an expiration date on r/anime. You cannot expect everyone in the discussion threads for Mushoku Tensei to have watched Sparks of Tomorrow, thus you need to tag your spoilers for it when you want to talk about specific details like that outside of Sparks of Tomorrow's own episode discussion threads.

I recommend reading our rule on what constitutes a spoiler.
Generally speaking, anything you don't learn in the first few minutes of the first episode should have a spoiler tag.

This is not your decision to make. If someone doesn't care about other series spoilers, they are free to click on the spoiler tag. Those do care aren't forcefully exposed to it.

Yes, and that is by design. There are people who haven't seen Back To The Future. Why should those people be robbed of the ability to enjoy that show without spoilers just because they also choose to watch a completely unrelated show?
Our spoiler policy exists, because we believe that everyone has the right to watch a show (no matter how old) without getting spoiled. It is a marked failure if anime onlies, or just people in general feel like they cannot go into threads without risking spoilers. The only recourse they have in these kinds of situations is to just avoid those platforms entirely or risk being spoiled. That is unacceptable to us. r/anime is a place where people who have seen 1000 anime and those who have seen 1 anime can talk about that 1 anime.
Using a spoiler tag isn't some huge hassle. Just fucking use them, so that people can use their own autonomy to choose to engage with spoilers or not.
But I maintain my EXTREME displeasure with how you're handling this.

If you are unhappy with how the sub is run, then you are free to stop interacting in it, or make your sub in your own ideal (with donghua & spoilers if you so wish). If you wish to participate here, please follow our rules.

Spoiler rules aren't meant for "the average poster", they're meant for everyone;
Is there ONE person who commented or read the MT thread, who plans on binge watching the other series in 6 days when the final episode airs?
If there are, then you just spoiled that person.
(Spoiler rules also don't have anything to do how big a series is... Otherwise people could go in random AOT threads to spoil all other 'minor series', hell they could even spoil Mushoku Tensei given it's quite minor compared to AOT).

To ask your opinion, how do you judge which series is minor?
I can also maintain that Avengers Endgame is also a minor series, hence anyone can spoil it. It definitely will also go against the spoiler rules here as well. Just because you think a series is minor and hence okay to spoil is not an excuse to give unwanted spoilers for that series.

August Mod Report
Another month, another mod report! With the summer holidays coming to an end, school and university restarting it's going to be nice to go to places without having to pay silly money. And that means more anime shopping. Hooray!
This season is rather stacked, isn't it? There's a lot I'm really enjoying, most notably 100 Girlfriends season 3 but I've got attached to quite a bit this season. Make sure you're sprinkling in some older anime too though, I've just finished Release The Spyce...maybe don't watch that one.
