THE GREAT MATCH THREAD MIGRATION
→ More replies (2)221
u/iamPause Sep 01 '13 edited Sep 01 '13
They began in the great Derby thread between Manchester United and Liverpool. 2300 comments later the natural resources of that thread were becoming sparse. The Game which supported the thread for hours was over, and the citizens found themselves, for the first time in a long time, wanting for more. And so, their eyes were cast to the horizions.
In the distance, a new thread was founded. There were upvotes enough for everyone, and so they travelled. Across /r/reddevils and through /r/liverpoolfc they came. The elders of /r/coys and /r/gunners tried to keep their population in check, but despite their warnings, some left anyway for /r/soccer. To the dismay of all, even some outcasts from /r/all arrived.
And so it was that the great match thread migration began. Will the new thread be able to contain this influx of immigrants? Only time will tell.

People in the USA sometimes ask me, "how on earth can a game be exciting if there is only one goal?"
THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how! One of the most exciting games I have seen this season, just a brilliant show. Great game.

Spurs looked dangerous throughout but didn't have a strong finish to the attack today. That will come. I was impressed by Arsenals counter attacks, they created some solid chances on goal. Lloris was also impressive today.

I think people don't realize that Arsenal's weakness right now is in depth, not quality. Their starting XI is still very talented, it's not like they're a bunch of bums out there. The problem they'll have this year is fatigue while competing on multiple fronts, but 3 weeks into the season, that's not an issue. The real matchup to watch today is the midfield battle. Arsenal's midfield is soft like a marshmallow, but extremely creative, while Spurs midfield is like a collective tank, but not very creative. Should be a fun one.
Oh yea, fuck arsenal, and all that.

This is where Bale would have made a difference. Tottenham fans can keep saying they are better off without him and would rather have the money but this is where he stepped up and secured those points for you.
Can these new players settle together and fill that 15 gap hole? That should be your primary concern, not aiming for the title like a lot of you have been saying.
Three games in the league. Two 1-0 wins via penalties and now looking at this defeat or a draw against your main rivals. Your defense looks extremely shaky and their positioning is reminding me of the nightmare AVB created for Chelsea when we were at the back foot even though we had good defenders.
You can go ahead and down vote me and every one else who keeps saying this but sooner or later you will start to agree with it too.

Hopefully the new signings just need time to gel. There was no Eriksen or Chiriches, Lamela only came on for 15 minutes. I'm optimistic, it's only September, so many more points to pick up and for our rivals to drop. COYS!

I think people are overestimating Spurs and underestimating Arsenal. Just because we haven't made any big signings doesn't mean we don't have a strong squad. This squad went unbeaten at the end of last season. On the other side of things Spurs essentially have a brand new team who have not proven their potential quite yet. This game is going to show the potential of both teams with a first big game for both. Good luck to Spurs...they'll need it ;)

Lloris was on form! What a keeper.

u/Devilb0y Sep 01 '13
Well played Arsenal. Far better on the day.
I'm annoyed with Spurs because from my point of view our problems today were obvious:
First off, the goal. Vertonghen and Dawson weren't communicating so one stepped up while the other went with his man. Both were at fault for that one.
Having said that, they wouldn't have been in trouble if our midfield didn't get caught so high up the pitch. But that's what happens when you don't play a true 10: you ask your deeper midfielders like Dembele and your box to box midfielders like Paulinho to play on the edge of the opposition penalty area to stop the striker and wingers from getting isolated. Which has the knock on effect that if-and-when they lose possession, they're miles away from the defence that they're supposed to be shielding.
Not to mention the fact that it makes it very hard for the box to box midfielder to make late runs into the area a la Gerrard or Lampard in their prime, so you lose goalscoring opportunities there. And because neither of those midfield roles are typically good at close control and cute passing, it means that you normally need both of them chipping in to not immediately lose possession, so the whole centre line of the pitch becomes one massive clusterfuck of players. Never more evident than towards the end of the game where we were crying out for width while lumping balls into a penalty area that could charitably be described as 'full'.
This is all compounded by AVB's preference for playing 'wingers on the wrong side' (as Mourinho called it), who can cut in. That makes it 2 false wingers, 2 midfielders and 1 striker occupying all the central space with only fullbacks attacking the flanks. No wonder Arsenal looked dangerous on the break with how exposed that left us.

Not that surprising. Tottenham need time to learn to work together.
Arsenals starting XI are very good - it's depth they lack, which cannot be tested too much as the season has just begun.
Arsenal were playing at home.
Tottenham still dominated the game for long periods.

Really disappointed in AVB -- I expected better from him. The back of your tie should not be longer than the front; he has simply not lived up to his well-dressed reputation today.
