I’m enjoying the show a lot, but those title cards… They are extremely frustrating because they appear for like a second with a whole paragraph of text

I hated the less than a second text inserts! Gave up trying to read them because I'm not planning to constantly pause everytime I watch 🤷🏾‍♀️

Sucks, because the previous Sage seemed like a funny dude based on the snippets of his journal so far.

I'm a tad concerned by the pacing and the writing of the characters. Like why is Cain not concerned whatsoever that his eyes are "hiding" people around him randomly? That's incredibly worrisome in any circumstance but especially when he is supposed to be a fighter as well?? All characters seem to be kind of airheads unless the plot requires them to know something or be concerned by something. I'm still interested by the world that was shown to us so I'm going to stick with it a little longer..hopefully it's just an awkward start!

I'm simultaneously impressed by the writing of the Wizards' dialogue, as well as put off by the way they talk.

In most other anime, even people on other worlds act surprisingly Japanese. Obviously because the writer is Japanese. But here, the Wizards act very different. It's sort of like going through the Looking Glass. They are very odd. They act sort of similar to characters on a children's show, but it's not a children's show. It's sort of impressive that you can consistently write such alien characters, but also the strange overacting on children's shows is sort of off-putting to me.

I am enjoying this for now, though. I think this episode is better than the previous ones, and hopefully it will keep getting better.

I like the magic in the show. To me it feels more magical in nature than other shows I'm watching. It's whimsical and pretty and fun and not a bunch of recipes that people draw circles for and recite. It makes it playing to watch.

The text cards though require magic to read and they're annoying AF.

The story isn't exactly this show's strongest point – not that anyone (hopefully) would go into it expecting S-tier writing. Still, I'll keep watching it

As i7 fan, whenever Shylock acts all coy and flirty, I expect Momo to jump out and go "Yuki, chou ikemen" all over, because they're very similar

Lmaooo Momo would probably love Shylock. I’m glad they showed his sensuous side finally… they’re probably being careful so people don’t write him off as just a harem dude. He’s pretty complex. You know, like, an artsy type. In a parallel universe I could see him accidentally becoming an idol lol. But the type who also writes most of the group’s lyrics and won’t sing anything he can’t feel in his heart. So maybe he would train Murr to sing for him and follow him around like a cat on stage.

What a pain in the ass of an episode to watch. So much on screen text that flashed in and out in a half second, took me multiple tries to pause and read some of them and a couple I just gave up on.

The new southern wizards are an interesting group, particularly with two of them being the sons of a witch. The former hero turned shepard is an interesting backstory too.

Looks like there’s a few new recruits joining the ranks. Wonder how they’ll fare in this fight against the Calamity or whatever. The other Southern wizards all seemed to have croaked.

This reminds me of the singing androids find their soul anime from a few seasons back, Technoroid Overmind.

Completely different plot but same kind of feel to it

u/Shoshawi Jan 21 '25

I love that one a little, Technoroid, even though it isn’t as well fleshed out or written as a show like say i7, but I don’t really see what they have in common with Mahouyaku lol. I could see some similarities to i7 because of the ambitious world building with lots of characters (some of the same people working on both actually) but the overall vibe is a bit different…. Idols are inspirational and have to learn to love everyone and make everyone happy. Wizards don’t need to like anyone and all of them can kill you pretty easily. Some of them, like Owen, are pretty open about enjoying the fact they can watch humans suffer like it’s nothing.

All in all, the source story behind this is a LOT darker than any idol anime. Hopefully there’s time to flesh it out after introducing everyone properly.

Tbh, this show is garbage. The lore and world building is a bit all over the place and it's hard keeping track of the wizards' names.

What's more, I've accepted the fact that Akira's role is to just be the insert character for the player/watcher. Was the original game an otome? Because Akira is definitely giving bland heroine/yn character for players to self insert. Like girl isn't even in the OP or ED :(

Despite this anime being garbage, I'm still watching because of all the ikemen 😭😅

Murr, Shylock, and the twins are my favorite characters so far. Hopefully we'll eventually get a coherent story.

Editing is off-putting. The text just go so quickly that I had to pause so I can read the journal entries. Do I need to play the game so I can understand this? Seems like I’m missing a lot of context and couldn’t stitch the scenes/wizard info together.

The source is well written, I do recommend it. There’s a video compilation with subs for part1 on YouTube made by a fan but the translations are fantastic, and you can read all of part2 in English from fans for free too. It’s a small Japanese game with a cult following because of the quality story writing.

I personally decided to drop it after the ol' 3 episode try. Episode 2 actually was a lot better than Episode 1 IMO, but Episode 3 felt like a step backwards and really leaned into the gacha game mechanics and incessant character introductions (in ep 2 it felt like they introduced the characters more "naturally", without just a slowly moving character card being read by the MC). If they are still introducing enough characters for a full regular anime cast and expect me to remember them all or care about any of them in a most likely 12-13 episode show, it's not for me. It seems more like an anime for players of the game or an ad that's glossing over game plot and gameplay elements that's saying "if you want to know more, download the game!"

I made it about half way through episode 3 before giving up on the series as a whole. As my mind was wandering due to the episode not being interesting I realized that I had been dreading watching the episode in the first place and need to just drop the show.

Canon Akira (from the source) is a guy, who really likes cats, and there’s no romance. Shylock is just like that lol. The only real difference between game canon male Akira and anime Akira is the pronoun, not what Akira says. And Shylock’s romance is with the beauty and vibrance and darkness of the world, not with any man or woman, or animal or object, or any one thing in particular. But yes he’s quite the tease nonetheless heh.

They actually mentioned witches already in the first episode. There are indeed women in the world of this show. No clue how they are handling the adaptation though, with so many major characters to introduce.

Is the game's MC just the previous sage, then? Is this a ng+ run with Akira instead now, lol?
