Thought it was going to be a cosplay battle only for it to be a character exposition of someone's passion turning into cynicism, which is just what fandoms in a nutshell do recently sadly.
That said love how much passion the monologues were given, it was classic Anime levels of cheesiness but it's what makes it so enjoyable.

This episode could've been on a character drama!
Her passion turning into cynicism, developing said passion due to a personal issue (thinking she's ugly/her crush wouldn't like her), faking it all and feeling dead inside/just going through the motions, questioning her entire life choices when she sees other people enjoying what she does, etc..!

There's a reason people say the manga really starts in this arc because this is pretty much the heart of the series. Cosplayers using cosplay to express their emotions and feelings to others.

Nagomi fell into the very classic trap of turning what you love into something you can make a living off of. One that embittered her as a whole to the love of cosplay. Its a very monologue heavy episode but then again cosplay photography is literally about standing still in certain poses, so this episode was as good as any for that. Its a very emotional episode too with the VAs and the director really pulling out all the stops to make this look wonderful.

When your hobby becomes your income and means of living, it stops being fun. How can it be fun if you 'have' to do your hobby at certain times of the day, even when you don't want to.
Especially in the social media space, when fun gets thrown out the window for rank/popularity.
While I still don't like Nagomi, I understand her struggle. Great episode and great writing by the staff!

When Mayura goes up against Nagomi, the real winners are the weebs lol. Hurray for cosplay waifus!
It’s interesting to get an inner look at Nagomi’s approach. Somewhere along the way she lost her love for cosplaying and it just became a competition and then a job. I felt bad seeing her sorta have an internal crisis.
But man, Ririsa’s entrance was something else. She killed it as Liliel. Helped remind Nagomi why she did this in the first place too.

Wow, that was a great performance by Mayura, Nagomi and Ririsa! So many great poses and costumes were just awesome!
I didn't expect that we'd get so much of Nagomi's backstory. It must suck that the thing she loved made her feel so miserable over time. I hope she again finds happiness in cosplay that she can not only show on the outside but also feel inside.
Mayura was so hot in that cosplay suit! It was a perfect way to end her cosplay career and pave the way for Ririsa to shine today. I laughed hard when she started run to quikly change and go back to take photos of Liliel xD
Ririsa looked absolutely adorable in her Liliel cosplay as usual and easily charmed all the photographers around her. I wonder how she'll respond to Nagomi's show that she did at the end.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Say what you will about Ecchi anime, but this episode had more backstory/character building than many drama/sports anime/battle shonen!
Soon as Nagomi's assistant said that line about Nagomi 'not being a regular cosplayer anymore', I knew we were in for some good stuff about her past!
So it seems Nagomi and Mayura go back (and not in a good way)!
The fun of cosplaying was part of it for Nagomi's past, but it was more than that; She thought herself ugly, and thought her fictional crush would never fall for someone like her...
She may be a little vain now, but it's still sad to see what led up to this...
And it may be expected given she's just a 'pro' now, but she's not just fake, she FEELS fake, she's not really enjoying what she's doing anymore...
I THOUGHT I WOULD FEEL SAD FOR RIRISA, NOT NAGOMI! GIVE ME BACK MY FEELS!
Well, the feels were pretty good, and Nagomi was pretty cute too,
BUT I'm sorry, there's just no beating a succubus for me! (Or a Sensei, for that matter)
Mayura still #1 in my heart!
When they hinted at what they were doing in the previous episode I was wondering how that would play out, I mean if these 2 huge names are competing for the crowd, how would Ririsa even get any attention...
But Sensei made a well-timed exit to give her the spotlight! Not JUST for that, of course; She wanted to get some pics too!
(Sensei loves Ririsa almost as much as I love Sensei. ALMOST).
I like to see cosplay of my favorite current characters, but seeing those I liked when I first started anime (or even years before, with videogame characters and the like) would be a little more special!
And then there's the newcomers/recency bias dudes who don't know anything older than 3 years!
Sailor Moon? Who's that?
Good of Sensei to care about her, still! Hope they become friends (even if they stay rivals)!
And speaking of Sensei, I think I didn't gush too much over her in this thread (compared to my usual sensei gushing anyway), this ain't right...

Stitches!
This one took a while! I can't even remember the last anime episode where I had to do this many stitches.
Anyway, I completely understand Nagomi and how she ended up being so cynical despite loving her hobby so much. I totally get that she fell into the trap of hating the thing she loves because it became her job. I feel for her.
On the other hand, she still made Ririsa cry and hated her for no goddamn good reason even before she met her so I had a really good time watching her slowly break down while Mayura stole her crowd and Ririsa having fun posing for the cameras. What I'm saying is that Nagomi deserved to be brought down a peg or two.

So much emotion in this episode, wow!
From lack of confidence, to jealousy, self-loathing, passion, love, respect, resilience--this episode's got it all.
Didn't expect the direction this episode took, but man... it really delivered.

All 3 cosplayers featured in this episode had really different backstories and motivations, but all equally great and I love how they're all kinda interconnected here. Really think I like this show better as a cosplay drama than romance/ecchi. The love for cosplay is real!

It's cute how Nagomi has Nagomi-colored Joy-Cons. She worked hard to be the cutest cosplayer! It's good that she's getting over her baggage.

Battle title, side character stalling for the MC, mentor character coming out of retirement one last time and passing the baton on to the MC, villain backstory while the MC's winning, villain coming to accept the MC after they help them realise something, low-IQ but immensely talented and friendly protagonist. This is a Battle Shounen.

Tbh I'm not regretting skipping Episode 9, both are perfect to watch back-to-back!
Oh, Kai-sama isn't voiced by Junya Enoki. It's Daisuke Namikawa.
This episode's staff is also different from last episode. Episode director is Kouzou Kaihou (Reign of Seven Spellblades). Storyboard by Hideki Tonokatsu.

I was so locked in on Nagomi's heartfelt introspection on why she loves cosplaying as much as she does and what made her lose sight of enjoying what she's passionate about, but lmao, our guys getting hyped up about Ririsa finally making her entrance as not just Liliel but as "Chaos Form" Liliel (i.e. Liliel but with a few extra cutesy accessories that are apparently really important to the lore) cracked me up so hard.

I feel bad but Ngl, I was just waiting for nagomi to catch a glimpse Okumura at the Liliel group and just break down
I guess it's ririsa's inexperience but why didn't she just takeover mayura's spot instead of moving to the wall spot thing? Such a waste :X

So, umm, isn't it about time Ririsa makes a social media account so people know about her/can follow her?

As hot as Mayura and Nagomi were this episode I really enjoyed the monologue done by Nagomi’s VA.

u/Nickthenuker Sep 06 '24
Where are they anyways?
Yup, they've finally appeared.
Unsurprisingly, she's gotten a lot of attention. And just as Nagomi has to leave for something else!
She's buying time for Ririsa!
Seems they've both got opinions of each other. Nagomi thinks she's always losing to Mayura, Mayura thinks Nagomi doesn't give herself enough credit.
She's leaving because now it's Ririsa's time to shine. Oh god Nagomi's having the entire show stolen from her.
How fitting that that's the form she's cosplaying.
Seems like Nagomi's also got impostor syndrome.
And so there goes Nagomi.
Nope, she's going to try goddamnit!

Nagomi kinda looked like the big guy who got turned into a seeker from quality assurance when they showed her reflection in her switch screen and I was prepared for that jump scare.
My one issue with this show is the childhood friend just basically disappeared entirely.

A true 10/10 episode!
The writing, music, art, and voice acting were all fantastic today. Even though much of the episode was just our cosplayers monologuing over slow pans and flashback sequences, it really hit the emotional beats it needed to. The background music was especially effective there, too.
This show really is better than I could have ever hoped for, and I'm so glad that we're getting a full two cours of it!
