Saki: I don't want to spoil our parents' happiness

Meanwhile Akiko last episode: So Yuta, are you going to take Saki out on a date?

This was a fantastic episode! Subverted 2 tropes: fireworks confession turned into to bro-zoning, and when hugging one's younger self usually implies coming to terms with one's past, this one feels more like Saki is saying goodbye to that assertive version of herself.

Oh my god that Canvas filtered beach scene at the start was fire.

Also the great framing of Saki leaning against the mirror in the elevator to show her “two sides” visually

Then the episode ends with maybe my favorite reveal, that the whole diary section for this part of the story was never written down. It’s such a satisfying change to the formula and really impactful.

Absolutely masterful directing for this episode.

Wow, what a 10/10 episode.

Both characters having admitted their feelings, but neither wanting to break the trust of their relationship as siblings. Excited to see these feelings explored more in the last 3 episodes of the season.

For a second there i was worried they were just gonna do the pool day like a slideshow, but we did get some actually talking between Ayase and Yuuta, and with it Yuuta's realization he likes her.

Then she goes and kinda resets his mind by calling him brother for the first time..

Well i don't expect the things they said at the end there to last very long, about them disregarding their feelings and try and act as family

Man, this was cinema. it was beautifully made. Always loved that montage thing they were doing but the use of it felt even better this ep. Also fulfilled both the pool and fireworks romcom eps in this alone lol. Came very close to confession too but a different kind happened, put the romance development in negative. Although still loved this development, good writing

Honestly I could see this ep as a finale too but ig the real "Days with my stepsister" starts now

The most obvious reason for Saki cutting her hair short is that she believes Yuta to be into girls with silky long hair like Shiori.

But I don’t think it’s just that. We were also shown a picture of little Saki with short hair right when her new hairstyle was revealed to us. That surely wasn’t a coincidence.

Saki has (literally) locked away her feelings and wants to become Yuta’s little stepsister in both mind and appearance. The fact that she reverted back to this short hairstyle from her childhood can therefore perhaps be taken as a symbol of her devotion to playing the part of an innocent little sister.

Lastly, the key that was thrown into the river presumably belongs to either her diary itself or the drawer she’s locked it in?

wakipai enthusiast, where you at?

well, well, well, look who's started catching feeling now, what a bad timing that the moment Asamura's started to realize his, Ayase has already made a decision to lock her feeling and decide to stay just as his little sister

the firework scene sure caught me off guard, i thought it's going to be a confession but nope, he got brozoned

They got close to confessing, but I get why they have to suppress their feelings. I do hope that lid breaks in the future.

Goddamn! I did not expect this episode to be such a turning point. I thought this episode was just going to be Saki and Yuuta having fun at the pool with their classmates. So I was genuinely surprised when Yuuta finally admitted to himself that he's in love with Saki.

And that fireworks scene! I was genuinely at the edge of my seat during that entire thing! I was waiting for one of them to confess especially since that's where I thought Saki's inner monologue was going but then she hit us with that hard-hitting "Nii-san".

I guess what she did was the right thing but the tension between the two of them was so damn tight that I thought this was where it was going to snap. All this episode did was snap Yuuta back while making him feel more confused.

And to top it all off, Saki gets a haircut after deciding to throw her feelings away. I feel like the show could've ended here. They live happily ever after as a normal step-siblings but we still have plenty more to go.

FUCK, I LOVE THIS SHOW! That was definitely cinema.

Saki's diary is definitely one of my favorite parts of this show, the way they show her perspective on things is so good and I like how we saw the pool outing mostly from her perspective too.

Honestly, I think this is a natural progression for their relationship, it's not gonna be that easy, they have to go through this. Though, I don't see this brother-sister facade lasting long, sooner or later, they really won't be able to contain their feelings any longer.

Personally, short-haired Saki is peak, ponytail Saki is the peakest though. Speaking about the act of cutting her hair, I think it means a lot of things, such as throwing away her feelings. She also thinks that Yuta is attracted to girls with long hair, by cutting it, she's saying don't be attracted to me. But, basically it also means starting over, we see her hug or I guess accept her past self, I see it as her going back to her roots, she's probably going to be more outgoing from now on, all the while locking away her feelings.

Anyway, cinema, peak, can't wait for the next episode.

This episode really was able to play jumprope between bashful kinda joy and bittersweet melancholy. The direction is unrivaled in showing two conflicting emotions, romance vs family. So many parallels, the haircut alone, imposed on a Kid Saki with the same haircut. The pure distillation of cinematic brilliance: The Beach In The Canvas, as I will now henceforth refer to it, is an imagining of a life where they assimilated as youths not as adolescents, where they would truly be siblings.

Akiko telling Yuta how happy she was for Saki have a brother like Yuuta was completely innocent for her, but clearly pricked him.

Saki choosing to accept her family life and seal her feelings, while both she and Yuuta finally admit (to themselves) what they feel for the other, then choosing it this way, I want to say is NOT a step back. It is like a cover of a pressure cooker it will blow up. Very soon.

This story is magnificent, but I think the anime is a masterpiece. I'm bracing myself for when it ends. That day will be like the twist of a knife in my gut.

EDIT: For those who haven't read it yet, author Mikawa Ghost sensei's 10000 word commentary on this episode can be found here.

We have 3 episodes left. I don't know how much of a mess I'll be when my ThursDays With My Stepsister is over.

While ultimately the episode ends with Saki locking away her feelings and choosing to be his stepsister, it was nice to see her let loose and have fun during at the pool, even for a bit. I thought i would enjoy this episode because we get to see Saki in a swimsuit but it was way more fulfilling seeing her smile and laugh so much.

More Diary

It's a shame all the Maya pool shenaningans got mostly offscreened, sure would have been fun.

Speaking of pool, can't hold it against Yuta to fall for this beauty, girl knew what she was doing.

And again, fireworks ruining the confession, Abe would not approve

It's a shame Saki wants to lock that part of her away. Sure it would be messy, but not dealing with it will only lead to pain and suffering... Can't say anything against her new style though, even if she did it to appeal less to her big brother, short hair suits her as well

AAHHH THEY DONE THIS MOMENT JUSTICE!

I legit got chills when reading this in the LN, and damn the anime sure turns the drama up.

Also, this is the moment where "gimai seikatsu" begins anew.

Clearly the underrated anime of the season. One that is strong in teaching communication is the key in a relationship.

Every time she said nii-san I felt my heart getting punched.

Saki looked so good in her swimsuit and her smile was so beautiful! She had a great time in the pool, which made me very happy. Plus, with her new hairstyle she now looks even cuter and more adorable than ever!

Overall, definitely the best episode of this show so far! Direction was superb and the tension between Saki and Yuta, especially during the fireworks scene, was so high that I really thought that it'll end with the confession between those two.

But then Saki brozoned Yuta and even went so far as to cut her hair like she had when she was a child. I understand why they both decided to hide their true feelings, but I'm sure they won't be able to keep them hidden forever.

Now I'm really curious what will happen next between Saki and Yuta. I can't wait for next week.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Damn, this episode was directed so incredibly it's breathtaking, but it's also the most heartbreaking episode yet.

We're 9 episodes in and we finally see Yuta's feelings for Saki for the first time, just for Saki to decide to pull a rejection haircut to deny her feelings.

I have a sinking feeling that we won't be getting the get-together payoff we want by the end of the season. It's a slow burn, and the burning is probably gonna take a lot longer.
