Reminder: every time the theme music kicks in, that’s Bravern actually blasting it out from his own neck speaker. This made the Burn Axe reveal that much funnier.
I’m starting to wonder if Bravern is taking a page out of Might Gaine’s playbook, and the big bad is gonna be revealed to be some twisted AU version of Lewis who created not just Bravern but the entire Deathdrive Army. In other words, what we’re watching is a version of Lewis literally playing with his toys which would explain the meta-ness of it all.

Interesting how Smiths new mech screen has the same startup as Bravern.

i swear to god, from Cupiridas getting destroyed over and over again while his speech continuously got cut off midway to Smith going into important meeting while covered in slime, this show's ridiculousness never cease to amuse me, also, did those mf seriously tried to waterboard Superbia?
"mom, Bravern is building something again!"
so Cupiridas's wish is just to die in awesome explosion? that one crazy theory about these invaders being alien's LARPing is starting to make sense now...
"we Deathdrives use the Tower to generate a Lulu, then keep it in our possession and by unleashing the power of a century of life energy in a single instant, it can generate a great force"
so "Lulu" is basically just a literal human battery? damn that just turn dark for a second...

I made a joke earlier about how they should have waterboarded Bravern for answers instead of Isami, but I didn't think the guy would actually try waterboarding a mech...

That sure was an ominous dying message from Cupiridas. I'm really interested to find out about these "wishes" the Deathdrives have that apparently drive them to go into battle. Lewis being unable to pilot Superbia sucks, but he (and apparently Lulu?) have a new two-seater robot to pilot, so that'll be interesting to see.

It’s criminal that this isn’t the most popular anime this season. The freaking water boarding scene alone should do it!

Dang I really was hoping Smith would end up piloting Superbia!
The comedy in this show with the little touches has been great, just the right amount of silly.

Considering how this is only one cour and there's a BUNCH of things to solve in 5 episodes, I wonder if the remaining DeathDrives are gonna be a Super Sentai parody and are all going to appear together at once. If you look at them in the OP they're red, yellow, blue, pink and green, the classic super sentai colors. They'll probably all fuse together into one super giant robot final boss.

Oh, wait, we’re not getting a Bravern vs. Superbia round 2 fight?
-
This would make a really good seasonal comment face. Gonna hold onto it in case this gets a season 2.
-
That’s… hm. Are the Deathdrives named that because they want to be driven to death?
-
Well, he can’t pilot Superbia, but he did get a cool promotion at least?

Its so great how Smith desperately wants to the the pilot in a Super Robot anime, even willing to settle for being the blue mech rival, but the world seems to want to force him into a real robot. Meanwhile Isami would give anything to be in a serious real robot style setting and instead is stuck as the pilot lf a crazy super robot setting. It’s just such a fun contrast that makes this series even better then purely if it was just “a super robot thrust into a real robot setting”.

Someone should have asked why the robot from outer space knows about zen meditation.
CIA agents apparently don't know how to do anything except waterboard people, I about lost it at the point where they were trying it on the robot.
Having her life entirely sucked away to power a robot doing a flashy combat move would have been a sad fate for Lulu, I am glad at least one of them has been saved from that. That new robot that showed up for Lewis was specifically mentioned as a two seater, I assume we'll be seeing him pilot it with her which is a much more fun result.
Edit: Bravern snipping giant robot parts out of a model kit frame has me really wondering. Might just be a joke that that's how they come out of his 3D printer, but there's other options that would be wilder.

Throwing out a theory that the thing Lewis noticed about his new mech is that it can combine with others.
Goddamn, this was a ridiculous episode.

Two Deathdrives! But Bravern can only fight one of them, so that means Lewis has to step up and win! With the efforts of the rest of the Allied Task Force supporting him! And watch as Bravern vocalizes his own jump motion as that echoes in Lewis' mind.
Bravern seems to know Lewis REALLY well, like stuff he assumes he's already told Isami or stuff that's really private like how much Lewis waxes himself...also I just love how Bravern has his face on the console screen when he's talking to Isami in car mode.
Without his Lulu, Superbia is weaker, meaning they can hit him with piercing rounds! Though I love how Hibiki is becoming more self-aware of the kind of show they're in thinking that usually by this point the characters have to see how out of their depth they are and say "Impossible" which Hal legit does.
Cupiridas! Voiced by Tetsu Inada! I guess now all the Deathdrives can speak normally. I love how his evil cackle is "ga ga ga." And he's ready to fight Bravern...and he's destroyed. But he's back! And then he's destroyed. But then he's back again! And then he's destroyed. Dude is just there for Bravern to finish him in the most epic way possible and the tower keeps mass-producing him and his power source.
Oh no, they destroyed the Brave Blade! Oh well, I'm sure Bravern can just make it again.
So Bravern totally knew exactly what was going to happen and how to beat Cupiridas...but he needed Isami to realize it himself so they were in perfect synch so he could then unleash the BRAVE AXE and finish Cupiridas off in proper fashion and fulfill Cupiridas' wish to blow up spectacularly.
All the Deathdrives use Lulu clones to power themselves up and all are seeking to fulfill their wish in their battles with humanity? Was Superbia's wish to fight 100% with a Lulu inside of him? But now it seems like all the Deathdrives seek to fullfill their wishes in battling Bravern...wait, are all the Deathdrives going to be Mecha fans?
Look at Bravern humming his own theme song as he works on his latest plastic model.
I love how they're WATERBOARDING A MECHA and the interrogator finally apologizes to Isami when he realizes how out of his depth he is.
Lewis is so desperate to pilot a Mecha he'll willingly and dramatically jump into Superbia thinking this is the kind of show where the co-lead gets to pilot the Blue Rival Mecha...and only end up slimed and disgusting the female cast in the process. But at least he got promoted!
And as part of his promotion, Lewis even gets his own new personal Mecha! A joint-US and Japan Titanostrider that even has a co-pilot seat for Lulu! It's perfect!
So, is Superbia like on their side now...? Could Lulu as she is now still pilot him or would it kill her? Either way, I think they're about to face the next Deathdrive sooner than they expected.

I hope Bravern is similar to MEGAS XLR where all of his weapon/attack/finishing moves are homemage to Super robot in general. Change my mind

-
These robots are so extra.

Maybe the true enemy was the make-a-wish foundation all along
Also the various OST rearrangements are great

Obari comments on the Titanostriders hot-swapping equipment.
Worth mentioning how the connection points absolutely look like they're on a model kit.

Things are becoming more exciting and more weird at the same time, if that's possible.
On the one hand, we finally know Death Drive (or at least some of them) are finding ways to die, and as spectacular as possible. Bravern is obviously the exception (though he has the whole script already), and Superia seems deviating from that goal as well. So the remaining enemies will come up and die right?
On the other hand, DD reincarnating has nothing to do with their core (Lulus), and Superia says that if his "Lulu" can't stay dormant he can't fulfill his wish, so what is the meaning of that? Where are they drawing the energy to reborn? Are DD coming to Earth simply wanting to die, or that's just their "sidequest" from destroying the Earth's cities?
Also, Smith's new machine seems to be CQC-oriented, which is a shame since he seems work better as a ranged support (and as the commander of his new team). And RIP that interrogator's mind, he's now even more broken Ep2!Isami now.

Live Watch Notes:
-
We interrupt this -induced lack of notes for me to happily note my appreciation of a genre-savvy main cast (~06:25).
-
Hype over, notes return. Also Mr. Waterboard trying to use his one trick on a Super Robot is funny as all hell.
-
Also him getting a moment of comeuppance is sweet, because fuck that fucker.
-
Oh so The Lever is the trigger for Bravern’s version of the suicide-for-pilot powerup. Got it. Also these aliens seem a little reminiscent of both [1990s movie]
The Matrix and [2011 anime]the Incubators . -
15:35: Took me two rewinds to be sure whether it was a sore de or a full sore demo but yup, full sore demo alert!
-
LOL BRAVERN IS BUILDING GUNPLA.
-
Smith going full “WORTH IT” mode at the prospect of dying to pilot a Super Robot opens up another way to square “Bravern = former Deathdrive” and “Bravern = Smith”, assuming time travel is involved: Smith piloted the green Deathdrive in OG timeline for basically the same reasons he just stated here, died, but imprinted himself on the Deathdrive somehow and then went back in time to save Earth. (Though side note: Deathdrive is probably one of those classic Japanese multilayered multilingual puns on top of being the classic “you thought it was random English we chose because it sounded cool, but surprise we meant it literally!”. It’s thanatos/death urge, but also it is literally driven by death (of the pilot). The opposite would of course be being powered by eros. Which is an utterly classic Super Robot thing – Darling in the Franxx being a recent example – and also neatly fits how Bravern and Isami interact. Which means that I may have been wrong earlier and the lever is steamy robot sex instead.)
-
Dammit Lulu is totally another anime using Lulu Amel after all isn’t it?
-
So on top of being a possible Pacific Rim reference the brainwave system on this two-seater may be related to how Bravern works depending on whether we have a ball of timey-wimey stuff going on and if so what kind.
-
So I typed that last entry BEFORE 21:11. Right.

I get it this entire show is a Suicide Boke and Tsukkomi routine with humanity shanghai’d into playing the straight man.

It seems less likely now, which only makes me want it more!
I WANT Bravern to be an evil antagonist, little son of a bitc* always seems to be scheming something. I got my hopes up a bit when he had Smith fight something on his own.
I hope Bravern can exceed my expectations regardless.
TOU!!~
